Hey hey! Light crew tonight, but that won't stop Marty and Eric from gabbing about Donkey Kong Bananza, predictions for the the six games that will be nominated for GOTY at the Game Awards, and some Summer 2025 anime reccos.

Holler at us with any thoughts/questions/comments/grievances, and we'll read some of them live tonight.

Fiction Factory Games

It's still developing story as of this morning, but what can realistically be done to stop collective shout from shutting down all mature games on steam and itch? My own game which had absolutely no nudity in it got caught up in the ban.

Best thing about Bananza is the relationship it’s created between me and my wife. I beat bosses and tough challenges then she combs through the layers after getting skill points

For GotY, my money would be on Death Stranding 2. I think Expedition 33 would be the next most likely, but, with how DS2 has performed, Kojima being Kojima and Keighly being Keighly, it seems like a shoe-in.

Does anyone play Tabletop Role-playing Games? (TTRPGs) if so which ones?

Marty Sliva

Definitely something I’m going to bring up tonight, because the situation fucking sucks. And sorry to hear about your game being impacted as well.

Does the existence of clothes for DK in Bananza imply that he is unnaturally nude by default and therefore this is Nintendo’s first mature game. Is Nintendo now more open than itch.io?

Mopman43

The Bananza devs said in an interview that they view DK as now being like Mario, having distinct ‘2D’ and ‘3D’ branches. Do you think a 2D DK is on the way?

Mrticketron

So VGA predictions KCD2, Split fiction, E33, DS2, DK bananza, and then probably Ghost of Yotei to wrap it up. Indie goty for me kinda a toss up between Rematch, look outside and Blue Prince. And for VA its gonna be Ben Starr's first win buttttt for playing Dorian in date everything not Verso.

You mention GOTY predictions and Summer 2025 anime recommendations. What would be your picks for _anime_ of the year (AOTY?) for 2025?

Cameron Ehteshami

There's been a lot of news that I'm curious to get more understanding on. The payprocesser issue, as well as new developments (I think?) on the developers for Subnautica 2 with the AI movie. For game of the yearIt feels like we've gotten some great offerings: Blue Prince, The Alters, Clair Obscur, Donkey Kong Bananza, Death Stranding 2... But is there a non-Nintendo Non-Kojima AAA game that you think could compete with these for GoTY?

ImmenseCookie

Love me some anime - I've recently been leaning into romance anime as the softest and warmest brainhugs against the constant volleys of sub-optimal news from the real world. Just finished '365 days til the Wedding', 'A Sign of Affection' and 'Yakuza Fiance'. Any more soppy recs for me guys?

Andy Curtis

How's the FF MTG cards going Marty?

Steady Goblin Wood

What future switch 2 exclusives are the two of you most looking forward to? In ascending order for me its Metroid, Pokémon, and Kirby airriders at #1 for sure

Charles Reimer

Most of the 2025 summer season anime that I am watching are sequel seasons. The only new one that I would recommended is The Summer Hikaru Died, which is on Netflix. I am a fan of the manga and actually purchase the volumes, something that I normally don't. It's a very interesting horror story. The anime is taking some exciting adaptation direction, which is rare these days.

Far Too Many Frogs

what do you think would be nominated to the VG equivalent of the razzies?

TooManySpreadsheets

There have been quite a few excellent games this year, and I heard a lot of "this could be GOTY" for about two weeks before the hype moved onto the next excellent game (Split Fiction -> Blue Prince -> Expedition 33 -> The Alters -> DK Bananza/DS 2). Marty, you're the hype king, so maybe this isn't a fair question, but has anything stayed resilient in the face of waning hype?

Dour Dodger Esquire

Left field question: do we still think Star Citizen is a scam? (Yes, yes it is). Also, RIP to the Exp 33 devs whose souls have been extracted by Kojima’s soul sucker.

Inverse Skies

I don’t have anything specific to ask, so I’ll just wish you guys a good podcast and will be looking forward to listening to it.

DK Bananza has been a blast. Nearing the end. Just so fun to go in, carve my path, and get distracted every which way! I like how the other day it was noted by you guys how DKs first response to most questions is "Bananas," and how that works as good characterization! GotY predictions: DK, Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Expidition 33, Monster Hunter, and Metroid Prime 4. Maybe Outer Worlds 2 if Xbox needs a rep. I suspect E33 to win overall. City: The Animation has been great comedic slice of life non-sequiters. If you liked Nichijou, you'll like this.

Exalted. Take Greek heroes, put then in Chinese and Indian myths, and make it over the top anime style.

Pcreed

Any talk about the Stop Killing Games campaign and/or Payment processors using financial Censorship to pushing fringe ideologies on the majority of users.

Blackmage

What do you think has NOT been done/ released this year that could stand up in this absolute blood bath of a GOTY fight? Brilliant, co-op puzzles, turn based combat, psychological narrative, exploration/traversal, and world destruction that i feel haven't been seen in a long time this year. What else could there even be?

Steven Thomas

I can get a Steamdeck or a Switch 2. I haven't already got a Switch 1 or other handheld, and have an extensive steam library. Which do I go for?
