Remember When We Used to Read Video Game Mags?

Old video game magazine rule. So Marty decided to thumb through every single page of Electronic Gaming Monthly #146 from September 2001, including previews for games that never existed, reviews that got it wrong, an A+ cover story on Final Fantasy X, and some of the weirdest ads imaginable.

I used to get so excited when my dad brought in that month's copy of PCGamer

An hour of Marty talking about a 24 year old magazine? I'm in. Also I felt that Simpsons clip in my soul. Getting the wrong game for Christmas was definitely a nightmare I had as a kid.

Loved reading the old magazines at my school's library. Komputer for alle (compute for everybody) had a demo cdrom, and I've gotten tons of milage out of those. Later came Gamereactor, that was a free magazine you could pick up at gamestores. Pretty good quality. It's still around as an online publication

Thank you for the bedtime story, Martin.

thanks Marty! I too miss video game magazines

"Lets pick a magazine at random, September 2001." Is a very "subtext is for cowards" pick.

The ads were tamer than I expected

My Gaming Magazine experience was equally exciting while being very different... who remembers MacAction?

As someone whom actively collects old video game magazines as an adult, I very much appreciated this.

Really enjoyed that Marty. Another thing I learned (or relearned, or reaffirmed?) is that you are a font of gaming knowledge. I always enjoy your tangents be that into pop culture or music or films. You seem like such a chill dude, someone you can just grab a beer with and chat about whatever for hours, which is all anyone really wants from a friend (even one we have to subsidise through Patreon haha). I'm looking forward to the next one. Maybe hook up a wheel of fortune to pick a year and a month? I'm sure the wonderful visual team at SW can knock one up...

So many key games from my youth in this mag! I'd also totally forgotten about Legends of Wrestling. That was so disappointing, but younger me tried to force myself to like it because some random wrestling internet forum convinced me that REAL wrestling fans would appreciate its 'unique grappling system' over any trash from the WWF stable. No true Scotsman... Kudos on the background music choices and all the most unnecessary editing flourishes. Really enjoyed!

It's funny how different that description of Metroid Fusion is from the finished product. Though they were probably just guessing at that point anyway.

god I love this man

What stands out to me was the British 'N64 Magazine' which was also a common import at Australian newsagencies (ask your Windbreaker colleagues, Marty). What I find remarkable is that it seemingly *invented* achievements. On the N64. In the medium of glossy paper. It was done by sending in photos of yourself with a specific screen from the game. Many were completionist challenges. Others were more akin to a score challenge instead. Reader rankings were also published in each issue.

Glad I'm finally a member. This is gold.
