Hey all! This week on Firelink, we're wrapping up 2025 by looking at the year in gaming -- the highs, the lows, what felt like it was missing, what we think will stand the test of time, and all that jazz.

Let us know your thoughts on any of those, or if you have any recipes for rad party appetizers, and we'll read out some of your comments on the show this evening.

Thanks for hanging with us throughout the year -- means the world to us.

Cheers!

~Marty

My rad potluck appetizer is 16-bean vegan chili. Use chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, coconut milk, and cinnamon for a beautiful sweet/savory kick. I'm not a vegan myself, but it's always appreciated by the one person at the party who can't eat anything else.

To me, what will stand the test of time is No Man's Sky, Warframe, and Brawlhalla, because rediscovering all three of them reminded me of the importance of directly engaging with media you like instead of writing them off prematurely from being too chronically online.

Nicely done chef, I gotta know, what 16-beans are you using?

Deltarune's new chapters this year hit me like a TON! of bricks and I have now officially fallen down the Deltarune rabbit hole

This has been such a banger year for small teams, do you think that their success will cause a trend by the various investment sources/institutions in other studios and solo developers because we all know that they never learn anything tee-hee-hee and the lessons will be misconstrued ?

Just any mix of dry beans from the supermarket. I do it in an Instant Pot so you can cook it in about 1 hour instead of soaking them all night. I also like to throw in an onion or two, carrots, corn, and a few cubed potatoes. Oh, and coriander, smoked paprika, and an unreasonable-looking amount of salt.

Just wanted to say that the year started pretty mild before going nutty monster hunter wilds, civ 7, avowed, with some great games with little end of year nods like Pirate Yakuza Hawaii and Dynasty warriors origina

Such a good year for games. I've got a recipe for dessert, not an appetizer. Apple crisp muffins. Grab a box of Crusteaz cinnamon swirl muffin mix, a granny smith apple, and cinnamon. Make the muffins like normal but use 1/2 cup of water instead of 2/3, dice the apple and add it to the mix. It might just be a box recipe with minor changes but it's still great.

As much as I enjoyed expedition 33, I wish we would have had a few more options for tradional JRPGs on console this year, that itch just wasn't scratched. Any recommendations? Also, shout out to Devolver Digital again as my favorite publisher BallxPit, Baby Steps & Skate Story were my favorite games this year.

This year was a huge year for games. More importantly, this year was huge for games my smaller, non-AAA studios. Do you anticipate that the successes of these smaller scope games and the failures of some big games, like Mind's Eye, will lead to more studios scaling back the scope of their games?

ImmenseCookie

Wishing everyone another happy years gaming! I personally made good use of my Game Pass subscription and played a ton of indie games alongside the bigger titles. I hope the service picks up some more quality titles next year.

In 2025 I welcomed my second child so have had a bit less time for gaming. Thanks for being there for me to live somewhat vicariously through your gaming experiences.

I haven't played any game released in 2025, so it's been my backlog year (Cyberpunk) and my forever game year (WARNO). Are there any games that you came back to or pulled from your backlog that you'll somehow remember as a 2025 game?

Looking forward to the pod. Hope you guys have a nice time

The season premier of Fallout, Season 2, was awesome. I have to thank you guys for the Fallout New Vegas stream. It inspired me to download the stability mods to get through my own FNV playthrough. Now I am playing Fallout 4 and liking that as well if still partial to Fallout 3. Never played this many games, new games, or demos. Thanks to your spotlights! Looking forward to 2026!

Long time viewer first time caller here, it's a real privilge to support Darren's puns and Marty's hachu-machis. My personal highlight of 2025 was the Lies of P DLC. Really felt like the culmination of souls like combat design. For a genre that has been done to death so much, it goes to show how good it can get when the devs try to improve instead of just copy; lies of p was dismissed by some as we have Bloodborne at home, but it's the seemingly little changes to the formula that really make its combat shine. Happy holidays and may we see some peaceful times soon❤️🐳🏴‍☠️

In a terrible year for politics, news, personal and global tragedies, etc, I'm grateful for a great year in games that gave me so many emotional experiences that genuinely moved me. Is there a game or games this year that helped you understand something more deeply?

Brad L

Now that a bunch of year in review "Replays" are popping up on Steam and consoles, has the cast looked at theirs? Any surprises? I was surprised to learn that Yahtzee's Starstruck Vagabond was my third most played game on Steam Deck. I guess it is a bit of a go to for when I want a second screen game or to just relax.

Brad L

Feel free to ignore if you're already doing a video on this, but I'd also be curious to know what your 6 GOTY noms would have been, as well as who would have been the winner.

Andrew White-Winter

What game that released this year would surprise you the most if it got DLC?

Marty Sliva

Hell yeah, as a big chili fan who also doesn’t need meat in everything, this sounds great.

Marty Sliva

Yesssss, huge fan of apple crisps, and having it in muffin form sounds delightful.

It's been a weird gaming year for me, I have a full-time job, married, two kids, and have been doing school full-time online. I just don't have time to do any long games. I really really want to play clear obscure but have not gotten far in it at all. This is brought me into playing games like helldivers in more recently Arc raiders that I can hop in and out of when I have 30 minutes or so. I don't think I've played much online game since Halo 3. I've had fun with them though, arc raiders has been a blast

This was the "Year of No Rules." Halo on Playstation? $80 standard pricing? A French RPG roasting all of our baguettes off? Industry Unionization? Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore...

kristianveierland

This is the year of Indie games and Double A. It is the bane of Trippel A And hopefully a start to a trand of more money being funeled toward passionate prjects and less money into Corporate shareholders
