Hey all! On today's show, we'll be chatting about the specific high and low points throughout each major first-party's history, some more thoughts on the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and all the other junk we've been playing.

Let us know what you think were the high and low points throughout Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox history, and we'll read some of them off on the show tonight. Or don't, life is too short to let some dork on the internet tell you how to spend your time.

Cheers!

I'll never forget E3 2013. Xbox announces the Xbox One, it's expensive, you can't have used games, and you have to be connected to the internet. Then the PS4 is announced with a presentation that was definitely made in one hour the night before as a direct response to the Xbox One. Playstation practically won the generation with that presentation alone.

PlayStation 2 is peak PlayStation so much so that I based my entire PSN name on it, with Team Asobi validating it via Astro Bot on PS5😊🧡😄

I still think 1 vs 100 Live was Xbox's high point. Thousands of people all playing the same trivia game at the same time, with a live host... It was easily the best home version of a game show ever released. I even won a couple of Xbox Live Arcade games in the second season.

"This is how you share games on PS4. " ............... *shares games* "Thanks."😆 You can see the look on Shuhei Yoshida's face, he was having fun with it🧡🤣😂

Sony going from the high point of PS2 becoming the best selling console of all time to the PS3 costing $600 at launch (almost $1000 today) will be a story of hubris told for generations to come

I’m not treading new ground by saying so, but the Xbox 360 era was obviously the peak of the Xbox brand. I often find myself saying that the PS2 is the best console but the Xbox 360 is my favorite console. The ‘you had to be there’ factor of the Xbox 360 is off the charts. Halo custom games, active game chat channels with the option of party chat, making online friends, a burgeoning indie scene in Xbox live arcade that people actually participated in, Xbox exclusive franchises at the peak of their relevance, innocent self expression via the avatar system, and console exclusives like the Left 4 Dead series and (at the time) Minecraft. The bliss of gaming on the 360 from 2009-2013 was an experience that I’m not sure will ever be duplicated. The world has changed too much. I’ll always treasure those memories. The interactive art form peaked on the Xbox 360. This makes the downfall of the brand all the more tragic.

The PS3 reveal that gave birth to the infamous "$599 US Dollars" meme

The PS4 reveal back in February 2013 along with E3 that same year was the first game console reveal I ever saw, and it was magical, I still think about it today, mostly because the person who showed up in the PS4 reveal trailer at the end of the initial PS4 reveal was Nicolas Doucet, who would later go on to do so much for PlayStation in Japan including Astro's Playroom and the game of my literal dreams Astro Bot. He ended up being right about magical moments that I'm going to remember for the rest of my life. 😊🧡😄

The high point was definitely when they all teamed up to take down Purple Heart in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory ✌️

The PS2 is not only the pinnacle of Playstation consoles, but arguably all consoles period. Cheaper than a DVD player and backwards compatible, with a massive library all on its own, it's hard to argue results like that.

Nintendo: + Saving Western gaming singlehandedly with NES. - The insanity of releasing the VirtualBoy as an earnest system. Sony: + PS2 as a GOAT contender. - PS3 as a measure of total hubris. Microsoft: + 360 coming for PlayStation's throne with some real effort to capture multiple markets initially eschewed by OG XBOX. - Throwing away everything they have ever worked towards with the XBONE.

I'm a filthy PC player who enjoys RTS games (hi, Nick), and I've only had a PSX and a PS4. And I'd say the line up for the first PS was pretty strong, and fresh, and very different from PC games at that time. Having the console opened a whole new world. In terms of Nintendo, the SNES era games like FF4-6, as well as Super Mario Bros are what I'll always remember fondly. PS. Am I the only one who thinks that Fallout Season 2 is going nowhere and is very unengaging? I enjoyed the prewar stuff thanks to Mr Goggins, but the rest was like a theme park ride with Leo pointing at the screen. I like the visual side and the casting, but the story (I'm not a purist, I don't care about the difference from the games) was very lackluster.

Nick's Eurotrip Movie when

Inverse Skies

It’s always worthwhile pointing out the nes saved the US market, not western gaming as a whole (admittedly the biggest / most important market, but not the only one). In the UK the home computer market thrived during the whole US downturn with machines like the Commodore 64, zx spectrum, armstrad apc etc.

Inverse Skies

Surely Nintendo’s decision to eschew cds in favour of cartridges for the N64, costing them third party support which went to the PlayStation and allowed Sony to establish themselves and then dominate the market for 2 generations was Nintendo’s biggest error?

Inverse Skies

Not their high point per se, but the best thing Xbox did for the industry is arguably promoting indie gaming through XBLA which helped (alongside steam on PC) the growers of the indie sphere into main pillar of gaming it is today.

Inverse Skies

I also think Sony’s best contribution to the industry (aside from shaking it up by entering with the PlayStation) was the dual shock controller introduction - now ostensibly the standard for controller design everywhere since.

At the same time delaying the full PS3 release of one of their most successful franchises - Gran Turismo - until four years after the console was released. It cost them a customer in my case, as I jumped to Xbox and the Forza Motorsport series.

The low point of Xbox is every time they acquire something that is doing good it tanks. They've basically killed Halo, they buy call of duty and it's suddenly getting the worst press it's ever gotten. The low point of Nintendo is choosing not to make money every time they could make a bunch of money. I would buy wind waker HD for $80 on switch 2 if they would just copy paste save as .switch2

Matt Tester

Not sure if you intend to mention portables like the PSP, but that little box of tricks was perfectly timed for me. It handled music when I had no other MP3 player and was around right at the time when Google Video emerged and allowed MP4 downloads. Some clever titles existed like LocoRoco and the ability to port PSX games to the PSP was great for me to get my Spyro fix on the move. UMD video was very much a flop, or at least the lack of AV output to maximise its potential was.

Big Goss

Growing up on Gamecube/Wii, and then switching to 360 in high school, I feel like I was robbed of the "Greatest Console of All Time" in the PS2. Im glad some of the classics are available now on Steam, but there's still a massive gap in my gaming knowledge that I yearn for

Blindman

Xbox killed Spyro! those bastards!

LookItsChefEric

Do you think it's possible for any cloud gaming iteration to have the third party suppott similar to the PS2 and Xbox 360? I believe that if the big three could achieve that sort of freedom they could have a greater diversity of titles without the risk associated with the billions of dollars spent in acquisition

Quincy Martin

The low point of PlayStation is that they haven't had a Bloodborne remaster yet
