Gaming Discourse Has Gotten Insufferably Dumb | Unpacked

Every game seems to have some "controversy" attached to it, but it's mostly made up nonsense. Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SecondWindGroup Second Wind Merch: https://shop.secondwindgroup.com/

Speaking of, what was the drama from Pragmata? Something about men having perpernal emotions without being a biological father or something? I tried to look into it on my own, but what I found made no sense to me.

Whatthehec

It was a bunch of weirdos being gross. They claimed that the child was made to look too "attractive", and that men don't have any paternal or protective instincts. So the obvious conclusion they came to was that any guy who liked the game was a pdf who had bad thoughts about the child.

Whatthehec

To be fair, critics are paid shills. That isn't up for debate, that's just observable fact.

Is that what it was? Damn, worse then my initial impression of what I thought it was. For real, even when media are being manipulative based on harmful stereotypes (not that Pragmata is one), it doesn't all boil down to that specific thing. This isn't an "All life must return to crabs" situation, lol. Reminds me of the BS the anime community had to deal with regarding Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out and Spy x Family.

Nicely said. Personally I only really get my drama second hand from you guys and that’s exactly how I like it, but I’m old and tired enough to have been able to switch off. Really wonder about the next generations raised on this nonsense (not that old, tired people aren’t also engaging mind…), will they know how to switch off if this is all they’ve ever known?

Critics are the same they have always been: Entirely useless unless you know them well enough to understand where they're coming from, how and why they form their critique. Otherwise their critique might hit, or entirely miss, with you.

I mean, there are actual criticisms you can make about Pragmata and some of its fans. Like how all the folks screaming ‘this game makes me want to be a father’ should probably learn what actual parenting involves. It’s a bit more complicated, exhausting and sometimes gross than going on a space adventure with your tiny robot pal who doesn’t need to eat , sleep or poop. (I actually really enjoy Pragmata though) 😄

Maybe the frustration with everyday life is finding an outlet in the wrong space? Maybe people are desperate for attention, so they join a community fueled by hate? The world is not doing well, it needs positivity and love, but it only seems to get the opposite. Regardless, it's nice to be a part of something that doesn't engage with that. Thanks SW fam!!!

Man, the things I had no idea were happening because I'm not on Twitter!

Jesus, talk about telling on themselves.

How do you think today's insufferable gaming discourse compares to the heyday of Gamergate, with all the rape and death threats flying around?

Mattezhion Zane Corgan Campbell

Personally I'd say we're seeing the mainstreaming of the cover the gaters used. The violence that motivated them has been rejected, but the noise and muck that lets them proliferate has been normalised as a profit-earning pillar of the community.

A couple pointers: Anita Sarkeesian and everything she represents should not exist in the industry. The rejection that her presence manifests is just people who enjoy this hobby making their voices heard that her use of the hobby as a platform for activism is not welcome. That this game has received public funding naturally warrants more scrutiny than a privately funded game since people were essentially forced to fund it via taxes, it is reasonable to expect stricter criticism of the product then. The lack of gameplay is a valid criticism as as it is this game can barely be recognized as one, to have an idea of how little interaction it requires from the player even the guy who infamously couldn't get past the Cuphead tutorial managed to "beat" this game. As it is this game is much closer to a movie where you occasionally get to move a joystick than a videogame, that a game with so little gameplay got so many perfect scores would give anyone pause.

Second Wind

It's even worse today I think. I myself was sent all those things just last year, along with messages to my family, gore to my DM boxes on social media, two swatting attempts... there's always been drama tubers, but not to the extent that they're at right now I think.

Maytree

(Reply to Second Wind) Oof, very sorry to hear that. I was tracking the Gamergate Garbage pile as it happened so I was aware of all the nastiness, but I haven't been keeping as close an eye on the current situation because I'm trying VERY hard to reduce and moderate my exposure to social media outlets since I value my sanity and peace of mind. Of course people whose livelihood depends on interacting in those places are just S.O.L.

It’s the world we live in now! If you’re an online personality with an opinion you’ll probably endure it at some point.

Brian Best

That’s just like your opinion man.

Tim Vinson

Thats sounds like projecting to me.

Tim Vinson

Cutting Twitter out of my life has been a blessing.

Second Wind

Ha, if it was only on Twitter that'd be great. It's every online platform these days. Lotta time spent moderating YouTube to make the channel a place you can actually have discussions.
