Do you think the general negative reaction to the Steam Machine’s price influenced GTA’s price at all? I was expecting $100-$120 so GTA costing one Mario Kart is a welcome surprise for me

Jason Ferro

I feel like one edition at $100 with all content and a disc would have been the best option. This $80 "lite" version with no disc feels unnecessary.

Cameron Gore

Do you think that any other current developer could wait as long between games like Rockstar has and even come close to meeting expectations? We been waiting for Half Life 3 for longer than that and even I don't know if Valve could live up to what we've all been hoping for.

Filthy & Free Publishing

As someone who has been extremely excited for each new Rockstar game since 2001, I am used to all kinds of controversy surrounding each release. In the future, what do you think the GTA6 launch will be remembered for most looking back - the empty box, the long wait, the union-busting, or something in-game we don't know about yet (such as Trevor's torture scene in GTAV, Hillary Clinton's face in 4, Hot Coffee in San Andreas, etc.) ?

As someone who never owned an n64 if nintendo drops ocarina of time on November 21st I'll be playing Zelda out of spite. Wouldn't it be funny if Nintendo slaps a 80$ price tag on it?

On the surface I understand why everyone would move out of GTAs orbit. But equally I wonder is there really no room for counter programming in gaming, similar to how with movies we can get Barbie and Oppenheimer released together or The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia? What makes games different, and what games do you think could release and not be impacted?

I think the most interesting thing about the release of GTA VI is the plan for GTA Online. With its absence at launch how do they later convince people who've been invested in GTA Online for 13 years to jump to the new version. What does that transition look like and do they eventually abandon the old version. Perhaps it's even just rolled into the existing structure of GTAO. I play these games solely for the single player, but know I'm in the minority. Itll be very interesting to see how they inevitably bring their cash printing machine into the future.

LaboratoryManiac

Considering the budget of this game is in the billions, I honestly expected the base version of this game to be $100. Paywalling single-player content in the ultimate edition feels bad, but I'm guessing the alternative was just "everyone pays $100."

I am curious if it will be able to weather its own release. Talking about hype, talking people already saying it outsold all the games...expectations through the roof but if it falls flat and loses out on a long tail of sales. I am unsure if it will come out of the red. Not including sales/projections for any DLC or an "online" version, that will cost more money but have the chance to smash more record sales. I am concerned by the idea that it could be mediocre and never have those chances. Then again I know little about the industry but this sort of doom thought came across my mind.

Angelnickl

I also say all that while not interested in it but as a 3rd or 4rth party onlooker, who worries to much about other people's "yums."

Jason Schreier did a video yesterday addressing this very question! If I'm remembering correctly, his takeaway is that any major studio won't be able to compete with the marketing in the same time frame, both directly on storefronts and organically from content creators -- everyone will be focused on GTA for at least a week if not more. Plus, most gamers only buy 2 games per year, so trying to compete with GTA to be one of those two is too high a mountain to climb, especially when GTA is $80. But, because GTA isn't releasing on PC, an indie could potentially compete in the Steam market -- maybe Silksong DLC or something from Devolver. He did mention that Nintendo could release the Ocarina of Time remake that same weekend (because GTA isn't releasing on Switch), and that could make for a Barbenheimer moment.

Fuzzy Freestyle

I know I'm in the minority here, but I have zero hype and zero intentions on buying or playing GTA 6. Every new thing I hear about this game makes me sick. From scaring all the major releases away making September overcrowded, to having to pay $100 upfront and an additional $20 to get the complete product. What's worse is that people will still pay for this, which will only encourage other developers to attempt these dirty practices. They aren't getting a penny from me.

Riley Lemon

I'll definitely check out that video thanks. I just think nothing is so universal, even with the most popular of things, there are always more people who arent interested in it than are and they are surely worth someone targeting. As popular as Taylor Swift is, there are more people that don't listen to her. As big as Marvel Endgame was there are more cinema goers that didn't care. GTA is going to dominate and out sell everything sure. But it seems unlikely to me that all gamers really have the same taste to the extent that the majority of people will be buying GTA

Alpha Aquilae

Joke's on GTA VI because I'll be too busy playing Control Resonant. 😉 I'm a bit surprised that the standard edition for GTA VI didn't push the cost up higher. The Netflix game sounds interesting - I am yet to play the Oxenfree games. What did you think of them? Did you see the gameplay presentation of Clutch today?

Andrew White-Winter

What if GTAVI you know...sucks? Not saying it will, but its resting on its past success so much.

Inverse Skies

I was reading the latest issue of Edge magazine and was surprised to see Yoshi and the mysterious book scoring an 8. I have heard so little about this game and was wondering if any of the team had played it or had thoughts on it?

TooManySpreadsheets

For sure. Personally, I have no interest in GTA or Ocarina of Time (plus I don't own a console so I couldn't buy them anyway).

TooManySpreadsheets

Same here. The overcrowding makes me more than a little nervous for some of the dev teams out there who are already struggling.

Nosk

I actually really like the $80 price point ($130 in Aus) because now any other game that wants to go past that point has to justify why they’re worth more than GTA 6

bluemage27034

You guys really gotta record that layoffs in games blurb with a blank spot to fill in company name. Hope all is well. Chameleon stream was fun

P. R.

I haven't played a GTA game yet. Where to start? Surely not the first one...surely not 6

JoMo SlowMo

Seeing the increased price of GTA6 standard edition, and them gating off content for the complete experience for a 100 dollarydoos plus shark cards for online, considering 2K is the only company in the US who would be able to buy Xbox, I'm going to double down on my idea last week of Iran buying them. The saudis are overextended, China is selling every studio outside it's borders. It would be so fucking funny if they did, and I'm certain it will be cheaper for the consumers to buy their Halos or CODs or Forzas than with 2K at the helm.

With Dan Houser having left Rockstar after RDR2, I’m really curious whether GTA VI can still capture the voice and texture of the older, pre-GTA Online games. Those games had such a viscous kind of American satire, and was occasionally observant (sincerely so, in RDR2). Do you think Rockstar can still pull that off without Houser? Also, I really enjoyed Nwosu’s Forza vs. SCREAMER video, especially the premise of SMASH as the evolution of KISS.

melchar

Charging $100 for a code makes 'GTA VI' seem like an expensive rental. It's being priced WAY too high. And NO physical copy of the game? That's 2 pivotal reasons why there is NO way on earth that I will buy the thing.
