This has probably been answered on the show before, but if not: If you could have an unaffiliated studio work on a remake of a game (or franchise) originally made by another studio, which studio and which game would you pick?

I understand why they do it, but it's a bummer that we don't get more remakes for games that could use the updates and quality of life improvements. It's always a remake of a game that already plays perfectly fine as it is getting a bump in graphics and price as far as I can tell.

I think certain recent remakes prove the value of them. Star Fox has introduced the franchise to an entirely new generation. Capcom breathed new life into the Resident Evil series largely through remakes. While it's easy for us old farts to hem and haw about it, they are proving their value to these franchises and I bet Ocarina of Time will do the same.

I am mixed on remakes. Remakes and remasters are part of my regular gaming diet, but not because I am trapped in a nostalgia cycle. I buy rereleases for games that I missed out on the first time (or two) around. I don't really bite as often with rereleases for games that I have played previously. It's why I am begging for a Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War remake but yawn at the prospect of them remaking the GBA games or Ike's duology, since I have played the latter but not the former.

Marty, how excited would you be for a Skies of Acadia remake?

Insomnia Inc

You get the remakes that are obvious cash grabs but trying to stay positive, because of Campaign Evolved I played my first Halo game ever this week, and absolutely loved it. we were a nintendo family, never owned an xbox or even a playstation so I've been doing that a lot lately with these remakes/remasters.

I like the idea of remakes when they're fixing an accessibility issue: whether that's gameplay, graphics, does-not-port-well-to-modern-platforms, etc. Thinking of FF7 for example. But honestly, I can't think of an old game that I'd really want to play but can't, right now, because it's "not accessible" to me. Are there any games you'd love to see remade because the original had potential, but would be 100% elevated by better graphics/gameplay/tighter writing/something else?

k_and_p

Actually, there's one game: Bloodborne. Not because it needs to be remade but because I don't own a PS4 and would really want to play it on pc.

Blindman

Can we get PS3 Games on Steam? I want to Retry Legend of Spyro plus many other games!

I can't get angry at remakes/remasters when I am so hungry for Fallout 3 and New Vegas to get an upgrade (more stability issues than look but I would take both). After Yahtzee Tries, Marty, I want you in an F1 garage after a race asking why a driver is so tired and sweaty when all he did was drive for 2 hours.

I view this a larger symptom of corporate cultural fracking. Remaking games, movies, tv shows, often without a significantly different or nuanced take, just to make a seemingly guaranteed profit on nostalgia. Maybe it's me being a old man, but i keep thinking we have muana/harry potter/black flag at home

LaboratoryManiac

Some of these remakes/remasters feel more important than others. Ocarina is a good candidate since N64 graphics and controls have aged poorly, and the 3DS remake isn't super accessible anymore. The Halo and Black Flag remakes feel less necessary to me. The jump in graphics between last gen to current gen hasn't been so pronounced, so last gen graphics haven't aged that poorly, and all of those games are backward compatible on current hardware. I just don't feel the need to buy Black Flag again when I can still play the copy I bought years ago without even having to dig out an old console from my closet.

How long should I remake be? Same as the original, should it flesh out some stories mechanics or should it cut things to make it more focus and linear? I’m specifically thinking on the FF7 vs Star Fox remakes

Plop_Tart

Remakes are a safe bet for publishers when there’s a guaranteed audience from the original. I would judge but honestly I’d be HYPED if something like Infamous got a remake…

Some remakes are a great idea. Revisiting black flag on new hardware reminded me that it's one of the best in the series despite its jank. I've never gotten to play through Ocarina of Time and so I'm looking forward to finally playing it. Having games that are 10+ years past release be remastered/remade can be great. Remastering/releasing the same game 37 times in 5 years is a problem though, looking at you The Last of Us.

Inverse Skies

Remakes feel cynical to me nowadays. They can’t help but feel like cash grabs as they almost always are remaking games that were already good or popular in their original form. And if they were already good then personally I’d want to play the original game. There’s nothing wrong with jank or odd decisions in the original as these themselves are interesting in themselves as they provide a snapshot in time of what gaming was like at the moment back then - and to me that’s way more fascinating than the same game with a modern varnish on it.

I feel like on the Rewind, the idea of adaptations of older works has come up, with the idea of new directors hopefully adding a new perspective to the work. The Nolan/Emily Wilson controversy touches on this idea a bit. Based on this, do you wish more video game remakes were more transformative such as FF7, and what should the marketing expectations be (I remember the Scott Pilgrim animation being controversial cuz a lot of people thought it would be a straight adaption of the comics)

Big Goss

I think a lot of the remake fever comes down to economics. At least in the US, IP is extremely expensive to acquire but really easy to hold on to once you have it. The major entertainment companies have spent trillions on IP over the last 15 years, and they expect a return on investment. The solution is clear, we must seize the means of entertainment!!

Fuzzy Freestyle

I just got around to finishing Persona 3 Reload and it is now my favourite way to play that game. I find this happens frequently, not just with remakes like Dragon Quest but remasters of old RPGs like Suikoden and Lunar. Quality of life improvements make some games I couldn't beat when I was younger more achievable. I really hope we get the Persona 1 and 2 trilogy in an HD bundle one day.

I think what a lot of people who've been playing games or in the games industry/ covering the games industry for a while forget is that for players who didn't play the original games for whatever reason that may be remakes can often be the thing that gets them into a franchise. The recent wave of resident evil remakes has gotten me into the franchise as I simply just don't get on with the older style games. I can appreciate them for what they were, but my enjoyment unfortunately does not align with that appreciation and understanding. The remakes fit my personal preferred playstyle a lot better in that regard. I do think however, it's quite easy to get stuck in the remaster/remake nostalgia hole. I love the Halo franchise and have for well over a decade now, but it saddens me, but because the franchise is so stuck that we need to keep having the remasters and the remakes just to get new Halo games. I think remakes overall are a good thing as they help bring classics and games that didn't get the time to shine up to a newer modern standard. But as always, I do believe that the original version and the remake should stand next to each other on the storefront.
