Youtube's Update Means Less Ad Revenue (Patreon)
Content
...So YouTube has changed how the studio looks, the dark mode is way darker than it used to be which is a pain on my eyes and... oh... Videos used to have full ads (green), limited ads (yellow), or no ads (red)... now everything that was 'limited ads' (which you honestly don't make much money off anyway its like 10% of what you would usually make)... have all changed to 'no ad earnings'... none at all... so I don't make any ad revenue money from those videos anymore... and there's a lot that have been slapped with that. When Youtube slaps what used to be 'limited ads' and what is now 'no ad earnings', it's not only making less/no money, it's also being pushed less in the algorithm because Youtube doesn't want to push a video they don't have ad revenue on (it's a 50/50 split between creator and Youtube on any revenue, including ads, memberships and donations). It seems now the only difference between yellow and red de-monitisation is I can appeal the yellow ones, and aren't allowed to appeal the red ones. But what's the point in appealing? I had an entire video taken down for 'explicit content' and where their AI timestamped as the scene of the crime was... the entirely silent last minute of the audio that was post-outro when I used to read Patreon names. And I appealed it because obviously the AI made a mistake, there can't be explicit content in part of the video that just had Patreon names on screen and no audio at all, right? Well the AI looked at my appeal and said no, I'd keep the channel strike warning for six months as punishment. I don't want to risk appealing and get slapped harder if they say no, I've seen it happen to other creators.
I've seen other audio creators talk about it, about Youtube putting 'limited ads' on videos they think are too suggestive, but what their AI has detected as 'too suggestive' is just someone breathing or whispering... as if it thinks those things are inherently sexual. Youtube allows romantic content, romance and kissing is allowed to be fully monetised, and yet... You can see some of the videos that now have been entirely demonetised include my Viktor disability aid comfort, what is inappropriate about that? Telling disabled people not to feel ashamed of their mobility aids is inappropriate to Youtube? How about the Doorman audio there which was fully monetised but the video had an audio glitch in it so I had to delete and reupload, and the reupload got demonetised despite it being the exact same video minus that glitch. The first couple years of this channel were great, I was gaining 1k+ subs a month, multiple videos a month were getting 10+ views... And then a couple years ago it just changed, like I'd been shadowbanned, 1-3k views on every video, my shorts have gone from 5k-10k to 1k to now 200 views per video, less than 300 subscribers a month...
This isn't me complaining because I'm going to leave Youtube, I can't afford to leave Youtube, but it is so upsetting and frustrating. I just got a house. I have a mortgage and bills now. I'm aiming to get top surgery and get married in the next year or two. And Youtube hits me with 'every video of yours that had limited ads now instead has zero ads'... This is why so many creators depend on off-site support like Patreon, because it helps fund the ability to do Youtube when Youtube pays you pennies or refuses to pay you at all.
Youtube has added a new column where you can see how much money a video has made. Which is actually nice and helpful. So to be more transparent with you guys, you can see how much money a video for me makes when it's monetised vs limited ads (which now I guess is no ads and that number won't go up anymore?). Viktor's disability aid comfort has made £0.75 with 4.3k views, Leon's audio above it has 1.7k views, much less then the Viktor audio, and yet it has made £4.61, more than six times the amount of money from half the views. A video with 6k views making me more money than a video with 25k views because the later has limited ads. I can't and don't live off Youtube and am enterally grateful for anyone who supports me off-platform. And if you can't/don't want to support me off-platform, the best way to help for free is share and push my videos/audios when Youtube won't. I never say 'like, comment and subscribe (and now also hype)' in my videos because I don't want to be annoying and you all already know you can do those things (apart from hyping which is pretty new and also Youtube didn't tell people about and also isn't available on the website only the mobile app). But also sharing my videos off-platform (sharing, not re-uploading, please don't re-upload my work that's not helpful and it's just theft), sharing them with anyone who you think might like them, recommending them to people looking for more audio creators to follow.
If my videos are getting shown less in your reccomendeds, this is probably why. If they're not monetised Youtube won't push them. If you want to make sure you don't miss anything, you can turn on channel notifications. If you were annoyed at the daily short pings, I honestly think I'm not going to continue them. Shorts don't pay the same way that videos do so I haven't really made anything from them, I hoped they would bring in more subscribers but they haven't because people aren't seeing them. Instead of spending hours making those shorts, I'd rather have more time to put into making shorts content people would be more excited for like more animatics and animation memes of my OCs.
Sorry for another upset post. It's just been a scary time moving and then seeing my Patreon go down a lot of money because I posted once a week in June instead of twice because I didn't have time (at least I assume that's why it went down?), and then getting hit with Youtube fully demonetising every video that was previously only limited ads is... well a pretty scary thing to see when you just moved house and have lots more expenses now and don't want to have to move out and lose your dream. I'll keep pushing and fighting, just sucks. And wanted to be transparent with you guys and also give the heads up to maybe turn on channel notifications. Also hyping videos is a thing on mobile now so throw some hype points my videos way if you'd like.
