This week I completed the checklist from last week.

I've added songs and sound effects, fixed GUIs and code, and playtested several branches. I've also processed my dialogue for grammar/typos, parsing 350 pages.

I only have polishing and playtesting left while the remaining animation queue renders. When I polish, I add renders here and there and modify scenes/content/writing/coding to improve everything. As a result, there are currently over 4900 renders for Episode 9.

Comparing the size of the development folders for Episode Interlude (2.51 GB) and Episode 9 (6.78 GB), there is an increase of roughly 4.27 GB for Episode 9 alone. I estimate an additional 100-200 MB size increase for the remaining animations.

The content of the interlude and episode 9 surpass the entire Season 1 of Being a DIK (~6.2 GB), which is reflected in the increased development times that I know everyone is feeling. I have also significantly increased the render quality of both static renders and animations for episode 9, as you can see from the previews I posted; this impacted render times.

267 animations are completed. The render queue has 36 animations of varied lengths left to render.

I've estimated the remaining render time to be between 4-5 weeks. It will hopefully be faster since one of the remaining lewd scenes is slightly more demanding than the rest of the animations.

I'll keep you updated on this progress weekly until it's done.

I have alerted my testers and proofreader, and they will start work as soon as the animations are completed.

I aim for a December release, but please stay tuned for the actual release date. I will announce it on Patreon/Discord/Twitter after beta testing has started.

Have a nice weekend

Awesome news doc!!! Have a great weekend

Furai

So freaking excited! That size comparison is mental though. Great work!

Nickatron

Thanks for the update! Can't wait to play :)

C3NTUR10N

Awesome sauce! Going outta my mind with anticipation!!

Trashloot

You are an absolute legend. Thanks for your hard work.

Lucas Santos

Thanks for the Update DOC its amazing news , have a nice weekend 💪

Chillhelm

Fantastic news, that would be the best christmas present this year for sure! I'm absolutely stoked to hear that. And your announcement how large this episode is in comparison absolutely blows my mind! I'm curious, though, with the much larger file size, will you be splitting up the game further? If I remember correctly, the size was the reason for splitting up after episode 8. Will you do that again after, say, episode 10, 12 or something because presumably future episodes won't be significantly smaller?

TheFeedingNoob

Don't overwork yourself take A-day off if you need to

DrPinkCake

Yes, I intend to split it again after Season 3. Season 4 will be another standalone. It's easier to work with and download "smaller" binaries.

NME Artworks

This was an awesome update. The quality upgrade in your renders has shown for sure. Especially with Sage, she looks amazing. I can't wait to see it completed. Thanks for your dedication and work DPC. Have a great weekend.

Stian Husby

So happy I found this game, and your patreon. Helping support this wonderful game! Love how much the quality increase has been since ep1 all the way up to your teasing render drops

Chiss

Wow, Interlude and Ep 9 bigger than the whole S1!

Chris Jacks

This pretty much lines up with what I was saying a while ago. EVERY branch from the past 8 episodes has to be accounted for and continued in some way. Each episode is only going to get bigger and bigger. Doc, you rewrite the word dedicated with it comes to the AVN genre! Proud to have a big DIK! I mean, proud to be a "Big DIK"!

Ish My Ale

Looking forward to this whenever it happens to drop my dude!

Kwadwo

Unfortunately, I am going to have to be that guy. Should we now expect that the new standard is one episode per year, or do you have any sort of plan for reducing the time between episodes? I think 10-11 months for one update far exceeds what could ever be justified, unless, of course, it brings us proportionally closer to the actual end of the game (i.e., we progress further). Note: I am by no means questioning productivity here, rather the scoping

Chillhelm

I've found myself thinking something along those lines in the past as well. But, thinking about it, with this being a branching game and DPCs skills constantly improving even further, thus increasing the quality of renders/animations etc., there's no real way around it, is there? Other than maybe bringing people in to help, which DPC doesn't want (which is fair enough) or reducing the quality (which presumably no one wants. I certainly don't.) There's always the option to reduce or even completely rescind your pledge between episodes or just to wait until the game is completely done. I, for one, have decided to stick with my pledge, because to me this is by far the best game out there and I believe that quality work takes time and should be rewarded. So, yes, it's unfortunate and sometimes maybe a little frustrating waiting so long, but at least to me personally, it's still worth waiting for.

BananaMan

I mean, each episodes gets longer, and due do the branching paths, the development time will continue to get longer

BunnyRabbit

Thanks for the update. I am really looking forward to Episode 9.

Nordwolf

Oh, so close. Great. Time for some new playthroughs to refresh some memories and get in the mood... (hopefully the import slots are enough then). Have a nice weekend everybody!

Space Cat

I had a similar mindset for a while, but then I started thinking - a tv show (with full production crew) tends to take a year to produce a season of episodes. This is one person producing episodes that are longer than a movie (the Isabelle branch took Dr PinkCake about 3 hours to play), and there are more branches to explore. Which makes it the equivalent to the tv season development time. I could binge a season of the Office in less time than it takes me to play all branches in a single episode. Yes, other AVNs take less time but their quality is nothing compared to that of a Dr PinkCake AVN.

Mr Rkoon

Yay! Last month before Episode 9. Already excited to play. Thanks for the update Doc and have a great weekend

Oli

Early Christmas present :D

Have a nice weekend, Doctor

Snickersnack

Take the time you need! I was just disappointed by an October release for a different designer who hyped up a big release and did not deliver (short and felt rushed), so please, do whatever you think you need to.

flogjam

Nice one. Thanks.. keep up the good work... what kind of systems do you use? (out of interest..) I got a RTX4090 recently and it's blown my socks off. Total overkill, but I got a good deal selling my old card to my boss. CPU's aren't really up to the task of feeding this thing with data for gaming, so I reckon it will be in my system for a good few years, unlike the 3090. Obviously your workflow is going to be a much different use case to gaming. In terms of rendering i'm guessing you need large frame buffers and a high shader count.....

C3NTUR10N

I've been sampling some other devs work, and yeah I keep coming back to replay DIK again and again because so far nothing else compares...so Doc please keep taking my money and keep releasing this high quality product...I don't give AF how long you need to take (well maybe I do, but dammit I'm tryna run a narrative here), just stay motivated and keep generating this gold standard, baby...if anything it will be a bittersweet feeling the day there is no longer any new content to look forward to...

DrPinkCake

Every episode progresses the story further. This isn't an open-ended project where content gets slapped on to extend its duration. I'm working toward the end of my pre-planned story, and I do it in big chunks. Every episode is mapped out in advance, I already know the big events of every remaining episode in the game, so they can't be made smaller. One way to make smaller updates would be to split an episode into more updates, but here are the problems with that: 1. More updates mean less content over time; as I have to do more release and after-release work, I get less time for content creation. 2. This would require me to work in chronological order with every episode, which I never do. Releasing the first part before the second or third part would limit my creativity, as everything that is released is set in stone. If I wanted to go back and put in more details or flesh out earlier parts of the episode, I couldn't because it would be released. I would miss out on viewing the episode as a whole, instead of working on smaller parts of this whole - sacrificing the overall quality per episode. 3. The amount of content would be different depending on the branch you'd play; resulting in i.e., that a Sage player would get less content than a Jill player or similar due to branching content. 4. The code isn't structured in a way that allows this, and more game-breaking bugs and unloadable saves would happen, causing more stress for me and frustration for you. Packaging the updates into a singular, well-thought-out big episode is the concept I've done since episode 1 and will continue to do for the game's duration. Yes, the size has grown with each episode so far, and Halloween is one of the top 3 episodes I have wanted to create for this game since the beginning, so it was extra hard for me to limit my creativity with this one (which you will see come release). Based on my answer, the question I would like to ask you to reflect on in return is the following: Do you think it's worth cutting planned content from the game altogether to bring an update faster, i.e. cutting out content for side girls, removing a lot of lewd scenes and romantic interactions, skipping side stories, and just keeping canon story and main girls' stories? If your answer to this question is yes, we don't share the same mindset. It's frustrating to wait, but one day, this game will be done, and I won't return to it. I may not even continue developing games after this game; I can't know that for sure; but I'm committed to seeing this one through. When it's complete, I want to know that I did EVERYTHING I planned to do and did it in the way I wanted. If I look back at this game thinking, "players made me rush this game", I would hate myself for letting me get affected, and I would hate the game. I hope episodes 10-12 are smaller than episode 9, without sacrificing content, and I constantly try to work smarter. But I won't be releasing at a much faster schedule than this. If this bothers you, my recommendation would be to stop supporting me and the game between releases or even altogether. I'd hate to receive donations from patrons who aren't satisfied, and I've always favored transparency and honesty. I will still work on this project even if I have zero patrons. This game is my passion.

nomaroftb

Interesting that you compared this to a movie or a TV show. I’m new here, both to the AVN universe and DPC, the amazing galaxy contained within it. This is by far—by far—better than 95 percent of what is offered in the various streaming platforms. Or a studio, for example. I’d totally kick in more than my piddly $5 a month to see a 10-episode adapted series. Problems with the sexual content? Get rid of it. The story, characters, and writing are more than good enough. Sorry if this idea has been floated. I’m sure it has. But DPC has a director’s vision, a writer’s mind, and the good fortune to know how to put those together in concert. And then there’s the music and how he synthesises it too! It’s remarkable what he’s done here.

Delachaire

Can't think of a better Christmas present than Episode 9!

Doc Eros

I felt the same, for a couple of months. Then I refocused my thinking. It really came down to what was 'I' willing to pay to support the project, and how much was 'I' willing to pay for an episode. with the updates taking more time, I decided to reduce my monthly pledge, and I up it when the release is confirmed so I can get it straight away. Another driver of that decision was I can't afford to support the same amount every month due to the current economic climate. I'd love to see episodes come out faster. I am wary of content bloat pushing things back, but I'd much prefer to see and play the product the dev wants to make, and what DPC produces after each update is worth it.

Stephan Skogen

Your level of quality is worth waiting for good Doc 👏🏻

Kwadwo

DrPinkCake – Yes, I do think it’s worth it to cut certain content, in order to release an update faster. Likewise, I think it would be worth it to reduce render and animation complexity for the same reason. Naturally, we do have different mindsets: I have the mindset of the player, who wants to play the game, and you have the mindset of the developer, who is producing his life’s work. For me, the actual release of content has a value in itself, and that value is often higher than the value of the 16th lewd scene of an episode with some inconsequential side-character. For you, the value comes from seeing your vision come to life. Those are two conflicting ideas, because in order to satisfy my desire for content, you would need to compromise on your vision. You have confirmed that this is not in your interest, because, at the end of the day, you are developing the game for your own sense of accomplishment. I would never advocate for you trimming down the game to its bare bones, so that the only story and scenes we see are with the main girls. However, as mentioned above, I firmly believe that some content could be cut, and that render and animation complexity could be reduced to release the game faster. Examples of this would be characters such as Madame, Sandy, Nora and Heather, and features such as D&G and the mansion minigame. This would have had a negligible impact on the player’s experience, while certainly saving time. Either way, you have provided me with an answer to the question that I posed, and that was what we should expect going forward. I draw the conclusion that shorter update times are not to be expected, and I will adjust accordingly.

Scott

Great news DPC! We are starting to get tentative release information; this means we will be happier sooner rather than later. On a more personal note, DPC, as I have said in the past, I would never want you to sacrifice your vision for me in the interest of pumping something out more routinely. No sir, I am in this for the long haul. I was very excited to read that this is your passion. It shows, it really does. One major thing this game has over any other AVN is the replay ability of it. I can still play ep1 - ep8 on any given day or weekend and still get some laughs and other feels. This Episode 9 is only going to further that ability to replay. I love the fact that you play test and add when you feel you need to. I can guarantee others don't do this. Your attention to the details sets you apart from all others in my opinion. I love that the story is not only told with words but with actions, reactions, music and feelings. It is truly a work of art, and you are an artist. Never compromise for the sake of expediency. I will just continue to replay until the next episode comes out and then again, and again. It is well worth the wait. I raise my beer to you and take another hit in your honor. I'm getting excited. Have a great weekend to you and all of your other faithful supporters.

Cody Buckingham

Put me down in the 'don't cut/sacrifice shit' camp. This is one of the best games of its kind for a reason. Jeez-a-loo.

DrPinkCake

You are listing content you find worthy of being cut without knowing its plans. But fair enough, at least now you know what it will be, and it's your choice what to do with it. Your conclusion is correct.

Blacklabyrinth

I guess this a case of different strokes for different folks. Personally I love the "side content." It helps round out and shape the world. I want to know where the Sandy and Heather stories go (I think the Heather one may be about to change, could be wrong). The wait is long, but the quality is worth it. Just my 2 cents.

This or That

We've all cum (hehe) this far, a bit more waiting isn't going to hurt us. With GoW Ragnarok a few days away then The Callisto Protocol right after that, followed by the holidays. I wouldn't mind getting cozy with DIK during the New Years weekend.

Dell

wow did not know rendering took so long

Nordwolf

Yeah, I posted that some months earlier. It will never be possible to fulfill everybodies wishes. Sure I personally could also find some parts that are not so interesting for myself. But they are part of the whole game and that is fine. All the side girls and stories make the world a living one. It would be much more boring without them. And I also like the minigames. I guess DPC's approach of doing what HE really wants, is a very good one. The developer holds his motivation high and many, many of the players are satisfied. Not all though, but that is normal.

Kwadwo

DrPinkCake - Correct, I don't know the plans for it, but I know for a fact that not all content is crucial. Even you would be able to rank the content you have planned in order of importance, and if it was absolutely imperative for you to cut some of it, you could. Regardless, cutting content would not be the only way to speed up development time. For Episode 9, it seems animations have been a huge bottleneck. Time would have clearly been saved if you didn't increase the complexity of them. I get that you believe this improves the game, and I'm prepared to agree, but I think it falls into the "nice-to-have" category. You have also stated that you originally planned for Episode 9 to be smaller than Episode 8, so it seems like the quantity of content for each episode is not planned in minute detail. Evidently, there are plenty of ways that you could reduce update times, if you wanted to. But, you don't want to. I appreciate you letting us know.

Cloonesk

Thanks a lot for this update ! Fingers crossed for December :)

Lectiuss

I think the main problem here is that many things bungled up, firstly the release of Season 2 on different platforms, which ate some time, then the Interlude, which I'm not saying is bad at all, don't get me wrong, but its linear nature and disconnect from previous episodes made it a one-maybe-two-times deal for most people (after that, you have little incentive to replay it), and that ate some more time, which leaves us with more than a year of waiting between Episodes 8 and 9, which is simply a long time. I have no doubt the wait will be worth it as always and I'm sure DPC's putting his heart and soul into the game (even overworking himself; DPC, don't forget to rest sometimes..). I do have an understanding for people complaining that the waiting is too long (one year is a long time) and I too sometimes feel frustrated by the waiting but DPC never let me down and I believe him, which is why I'm supporting him here. And I'm sure the time between Episodes 9 and 10 will be much shorter than 8 and 9 as there's no season release nor an Interlude.

keep up the good work DPC, fuck the haters

PathFinderReaper

I'm all for DPC's vision for this game and would rather have quality and more content that leaves you satisfied then speedy smaller releases that makes you feel somethings missing :/ keep up the good work DPC just remember that most of your fans and pledges got your back and we trust you to bring it to us the best you can

Vande

I see your point and this wait sucks because we all want more amazing content but somethings you might be forgetting that contributed to the development time 1. The branching paths and making sure all the stuff from the last 8 episodes would carry over to this new save 2. The interlude to intrude us to Zoey 3. The music copyright issue he had to deal with 4. Someone stealing his game and selling it on another platform I’m sure I’m forgetting some stuff but I think when all that gets taken into account on top of what the normal workload is for an episode you start to see why this took longer then expected. Now I’m sure DPC would love to get that timeframe down if he could but as of now I think we just have to be patient

M.M.

Respectfully, DPC, please do believe us: you'll always have fans who'll.. Oh, what was the proper term... oh yes, give a pretty big fu..ing diarrhea shit about your vision, your passion and dedication to your story. Everything worthwhile in life is exactly that. Also, just thank you for all your hard work!

DrPinkCake

Thanks! I know there are different opinions on how to make this game, and that impatience stems from the excitement of wanting to play more. It is stressful since I want everyone to like what I'm creating and not have you guys frustrated with how long things take. Ultimately, I know the majority will love it once it's released, and the time spent waiting was worth it.

Ardor

There will always be opinions on everything in life. What's important is staying the course with your vision for the game. Being A DIK is what I call the Gold Standard in adult games. Despite how eager I am to continue my 17 playthroughs I have ready to continue, I know when it lands I'll have a quality product to enjoy. And that quality has only increased with EACH release! It's been what? A year? Since Interlude released. I get the impatience of others but I suck it down because what I said above. I get that this could be stressful for you as well. But believe me when I say you are on track in think the majority of us care and will love what you have crafted. There are already so many great memories with this game and I look forward to more in the future.

Kent Soileau

We know that it will be well worth the wait.....

Ville Topi

Weeks fly by just by waiting for the updates... I don't have many games I've spent this much time with and I still get the feels every time I play it.

Side content might not be crucial to you, maybe. But that doesn't mean it isn't crucial for the other players. If you are here it's because you liked the game. Stop being impatient. The wait will just make it even better when it comes out.

tinyrock12

This guy is comparable to George RR Martin.

Tyler Robbins

George just has to write... lol and he takes 20 years for 1 book.

Jayden

as in slow or good book author?

C3NTUR10N

Hopefully meaning he's weaving an outstanding, complex story and not planning to kill off every character you have come to love!

Kwadwo

Cédrik - Where have I said that I don't care about the side content? I agree that side content, as a general concept, is crucial, but it is an irrefutable fact that SOME side content adds no significant value and could be easily sacrificed without any impact on the player's experience. Regardless, as I have also written, a lot of time can clearly be saved even without cutting content. It's funny you should say the wait will make it better when the game comes out, because I find myself considerably less excited than what I would normally.

Milk

Veni, Vidi, Vici. Well worth the wait! Only 2 Scenes left to uncover. Going to be a depressing wait for the next episode.
