UPDATE: I'm now obsessed with O Rly? after listening with headphones only whilst cycling lol. Ironically the video really distracted me. I think if it wasn't for listening seperately the dance practice would've got me too! I'll try and revisit the rest of the album too!

I was so looking forward to doing this on Youtube but once I heard everything I realised it's best it stays here.

My main critiques are, JYP doesn't know where to take these guys and I think there's confusion over what their USP is and because they don't seem to have a stand out vocalist, similar to Close Your Eyes, their branding seems to be about energy and intensity over good songs that say something or push the envelope in a refreshing way. They're following safer trends but sadly that means they're just like any other generic boy group which for a big company like jyp should never be the case.

It's a shame cos they started off SO strong but it's been downhill since for me. The songs aren't necessarily bad either and some of these songs could've gone somewhere, esp the title track, GOD that pre chorus is AMAAAZINGG and yet they took a predictable safe boygroup route with the chorus.

The same goes for their imaging too, if they're aiming for this vibe then I hope they maintain it.

I'll maybe leave them for a couple of comebacks and return at a later time cos right now i'm not feeling it.

if i was just listening to the songs alone, i agree with what you say, but since they advertise themselves as such a dance/performance heavy group & have a dance to like every song they release, i quite enjoy the direction they are taking. but i’m only really listening if i’m watching those mfs dance along w it 😂

Koko3op

And that's the issue :'( rgesgrsesahs

I agree about generic music but I feel something special about them and I'm not saying this because I love them. It takes time but there recent comeback was the best one since there predebut song at least in my opinion.

Koko3op

That prechorus nearly got me but i'll see

REESE

I've been hesitant on watching Nexz' recent comeback because their last song was not my cup of tea. O-Rly took a few listens to grow on me. I do agree that their songs has become really generic boygroup sounding, wish JYP gave them something different because I absolutely adore the members.

Koko3op

HEY REESE! Yess they're just soo talented it feels like a waste.

mereliza

As soon as I heard the chorus in the teaser I let go of any expectations I still had even after Nallina lolll. It's such a shame because they're undeniably talented and hardworking, three of the members even participated in choreographing both promoted tracks, but musically and conceptually something's not clicking. I have a feeling that their division is just not used to developing artistic identity after relying on SKZ making their own stuff for so long.

Koko3op

Ahh that's such a great point!!

Aww. Tha sucks. This album has been on repeat for me, and when I first saw the highlight medley, I got even more excited about the upcoming album . When I first heard the album on Monday, I was very satisfied. I've been listening to it every morning this week as I drive to work. It's my album this month. Do I enjoy the performances that I saw of the songs so far? Yes. Because that's what their strong point is, but I don't need them to enjoy the music more. I love their image is playful and rebellious. That they are going to do things their way at their pace. They are my 5th generation boy group and no one else has got me like them in the 5th generation. I feel like every kpop group I like just has IT, and NEXZ is that for me.

Koko3op

Yeahh I think I'm definitely going to check out their performances and dance practice and O rly? has potential to grow on me cos i really love the pre choruses but that fucking chorus lol. I do want them to surprise me and really embody the energy they had in their pre debut dance videos as well as their debut song.

Candice Blair

I think they do. Their "It's Live" performance was really fun. They have fun on stage performing, and they look like they enjoy what they do. Plus this time around, Tomoya, Yu, and Haru got their choreography accepted for Simmer and O-RLY. :)

So, I’m sad that Miracle wasn’t the direction they went. I liked the Ride the vibe. But I don’t check them out because the sound (choruses) aren’t my cup of tea. That being said, they’re like the extreme version of itzy for me. For ITZY, sounds like GOLD, I already like but the live performance is what really seals it. For NEXZ, personally, I feel like they make music to be watched…not really listened too. And I’m wondering if that is suppose to be concept for the group now. I’d watch an O-rly performance, I wouldn’t listen too it.

Koko3op

Oooo ITZY is a good comparison!

I am really glad that you are going to revisit the album because i think the sound when you hear the rest of the songs in album sounds a bit off. Maybe that is the reason that you don't like it as much. But its okay because i do understand that different people have different taste in music and I do respect that. I also think that it is time for you to check out their dance practices because I really wanna hear your thoughts on that.

Koko3op

If you listen with headphones apple music is second to none!

O Rly was the biggest grower for me, the pre chorus and bridge have been stuck in my head on repeat since it was released 😂

shana

im rlly glad to read o-rly grew on you in the end !! i hope you'll feel the same about the rest of the songs too

Kimmi N

I'm right there with you. They have that It-Factor for me, and I think it shows up in a big way in their performances. But even their rapping and singing has gotten better. And the way they have started choreographing as well, including the biggest killing parts in Simmer? I'm so impressed with how rapidly they're growing. I hope people won't write them off and will give them a chance to grow and evolve their artistry. If they're this good right now at a simmer, I can only imagine what they'll be like at boiling point.

Kimmi N

I hope you do revisit the album and like it better, because I actually like this project quite a bit. And I'm glad O-Rly grew on you lol. I do have to admit though that my favourite part is watching them perform. I think they make songs to perform to. It comes together fully on stage. Particularly through their dance performance. Like, I'm addicted to the Simmer choreo. It's so good. O-Rly too. I think they tried the music focused approach and realized that they were muting what made them shine which is their performance, so now they're making music that can show off their dancing. Once they start to gain a following, I think they'll start switching up their sound and experimenting a bit.

Koko3op

Yeahh i'm looking forward to seeing the dance practices etc! I'm just watching their variety shows now, they're super fun. I've tried listening to the other songs more but nothing is hitting like O Rly? but that's fine

Candice Blair

Last album they helped with, Next Zeneration, and I feel like this album aligns with the boys' vision for themselves as well. They are improving at a rapid pace, and it's amazing to see as someone who has been there since the survival show. :)

mona

You worded this perfectly <3
