In this episode of Anatomy of a Song, I compare the vocal approaches of JYP and SM through some of their standout female soloists. By stripping the production back, I focus on how each voice carries the song — tone, control, delivery, and overall presence.

Using tracks like I Found You by Girls' Generation’s Taeyeon, “Butterflies” by TWICE’s Nayeon, “ATM” by Jihyo, “Blue” by aespa’s Winter, and “Whatever” by Red Velvet’s Seulgi, I break down how each artist approaches phrasing and vocal texture.

JYP and SM have very different vocal philosophies — one often leaning into clarity and accessibility, the other into control and layering — but how does that translate at a solo level?

Lmaoooo. I was HOPING you'd listen to the ATM vocals. You are so right from your album reaction, in that it shouldn’t have been a trap beat. For me, ATM has always been about the vocals and the surprises hiding behind the main vocal. I'm so glad you enjoyed it even more the second time around :)

i LOOVE it so much more now!

SM is just so strong in the vocal category. They really don’t play about that lmao

After seeing Jihyo perform it live last night…I’m fine with the trap beat since all of the solos were created for the tour and Jihyo’s dancing on that beat…she is mother.

this vid reminded me to go relisten to nayeon's second EP like some of the songs on there are so good!! also jihyo omg- woah the layers on ATM, she ate downnn especially with that one run, i always thought she was a belter but wowww~ and then seulgi being too generous by giving us everything in the first chorus but not adding to it in the end LMAOO side note since you listened to blue by winter, but idk if you've watched it off screen; the aespa girlies released recording behind vids of their most recent solo songs, like giselle and even ningning lowkey surprised me with their melody choices since they wrote their songs.

I agree. I too saw it live!! For the concert, it makes sense since everyone else’s solo was upbeat and energetic. Maybe we get a piano ver in the future lol.
