In today’s episode, I talk about a growing shift I’ve noticed in HYBE’s artistic direction — one that seems to prioritise a more “global” image over traditional K-pop performance.

From stripped-back stages to a reduced focus on choreography and spectacle, I question whether this approach actually works for idols whose strengths were built within the K-pop system. Using recent examples, including TXT's newest comeback and BTS’ concert direction, I unpack why removing performance elements doesn’t automatically create authenticity — and can sometimes expose the lack of it.

I also discuss Heeseung's new solo identity, Evan and much moreee

THIS! im usually a silent viewer but Hybe’s approach to k-pop has had me HOT. I came across kpop in 2010 and what I love about it is how I always viewed it as a COLLABORATIVE performance art. The set design, music, choreography, fashion— even the way the light sticks were coordinated at the BTS concert I went to in 2018 to make the audience part of the show all make me awe-struck of how people can come together to make beautiful art. It breaks my heart to see how this rush to chase trends/money and western individualism is diluting the essence of what made me fall in love with the K-pop.

On another note, my (fully uninformed/researched) conspiracy theory based on a headline that Bang PD can’t leave the country because of stock fraud is that all these rushed projects are because of financial issues. But this is me fully being messy, so take that as a grain of salt

I was waiting to hear your opinion on this

Micah the problem with your podcast is that not enough people are listening to you!!!! I can't with the fake people who don't actually care about ppl. When you said basically they can only "love" their idol if they're ABSOLUTELY perfect??? I almost threw my phone. Cause 100% trueeeeeee. I need some of these death wreath senders and death notice truck senders to get an actual life. With Gunwoo, i never really got that side of him. Never sensed arrogance from him even through BP2. I'm wondering if ppl think hes arrogant just cause of what people say he said. But i do look at how people around him act. Its all edited anyway but of what they show, there didn't seem like there was that arrogance about him and the members surely didn't act like it either. But do you have some additional tea abt what he said that was so terrible?? Cause my timeline only shows Gunwoo support. .

This Gunwoo thing is giving me Riize flashbacks. And i fear, companies will never care about the people who want the person in the group or care about the artist and what that person coukd bring to the group. Millions of people voted for him, does that mean nothing?

Ha thanks! The TXT fans were rattled though and have been having a field day on my community post.

I didn't even know TXT had a comeback
