The EVAN documentary ended up being more interesting than I expected tho it was in a different way. Seeing how the title track was chosen, hearing about the songs that almost made the album, and realising how quickly artists can pitch and create new music... it gave me a lot to think about.

I also chat about NewJeans returning as four for their anniversary, Jungwon's apology in Kazakhstan, CORTIS' concert, EVAN's September mini album, Tuide's debut, BTS' World Cup performance, RM's comments on Arirang, and Ningning calling out sasaengs.

Heavy on CORTIS trying to be an underground artist. "Fake it till you make it" can only get you so far. The image they're trying to sell just doesn't match who they really are. I completely agree with your point. I love that you caught how they're relying too much on the bravado and "underground" image to make up for the areas where they still have room to grow. A strong concept only works when it's backed by the talent and performances to support it. Otherwise, it just comes across as forced.

Allll of this!!! It’s getting old fast!!

OT7ers are acting like BELIFT giving feedback on a debut title track is proof they were “controlling” him. That’s literally what labels do. They have A&R teams whose job is to review songs, give creative feedback, and help choose the strongest title track. A business meeting isn’t a conspiracy.😭😭 From what we’ve seen, Heeseung received feedback and ultimately went with “Ride or Die.” Whether people agree with that decision or not, constructive feedback during a debut isn’t unusual, nor is it automatically evidence that an artist has no creative freedom. My interpretation is that the feedback was probably less about shutting down his creativity and more about choosing the strongest possible debut. If the company believed the metal-influenced title track wasn’t the strongest choice for a debut, that’s exactly the kind of feedback an A&R team is supposed to provide. Communication in many East Asian professional settings tends to be more indirect, so reading between the lines, I interpreted the feedback as, “This isn’t the strongest title track for your debut,” rather than a rejection of his creativity. but dare tell the ot7ers that Belift's feedback was constructive and avoiding a disaster 🤯

i think hybe really wants cortis to be the new big bang lol because big bang is a kpop group that 1) was well loved by the gp, had a stable fandom, and respected by underground khh artists, 2) first sold the image of a performance group that doesnt have to do choreo to sell a show, 3) supported largely by men (and we all know misogyny makes people respect bgs with ~crazy girl fans~ less... 🙄) which is why they specifically put male dancers on the floor to pose as fans. hate that hybe keeps trying to manufacture branding this hard when the reason why bts blew up in the first place was because their 2013-15 discography was uniquely authentic to them and thats what fans connected with.

Koko3op

Oooo yess!! i forgot to mention the fake moshpit lol but i think you're right!!

Koko3op

IHDFOISDHIOHSDFIOHAFIOHDA argh they're insane. Exactly it was all very normal.

kat

literally took everything out my mouthh but lmaoo that fake moshpit was crazyyy Ive never seen anything like that

regarding the boycott bit: I personally think that boycotts DO work (I've experienced them personally with LOONA) but it does need specific circumstances for it to work. I think it worked for LOONA because the company is not big and they're incompetent as fuck and the fans are their main money making machine so when the fans started boycotting, it made a real impact. HYBE is not the same though, they have the privilege of losing even half of the fan support and still be fine. It sucks but it is the reality.

Koko3op

Exactly! That's the only boycott that ever worked which to me means they don't work since they're never done well and to companies and groups too big to fail lol

there wasn't any fake moshpit, be careful not to fall for misinformation and check your sources. it was their male dancers, they were part of the concert set and they would go near the crowd to hype up the crowd. cortis came out with them, the fans there knew it was their dancers. some ppl took a clip of them dancing/getting hype and somehow spread that as "hired people trying to fake a mosh pit" when that wasn't even a mosh pit to begin with and the worst part is people are falling for it lmao. amongst all of the valid criticisms about their concert, there were also a lot of ppl spreading misinformation maliciously.

Great episode. Always appreciate your thoughts on stuff because I know you’ll be honest even if it’s not popular. First off, with ningning - her and Giselle have both been calling out the nasty shit lately and I’m here for it. Jungwon(?) apology was refreshing too and I saw a lot of people say like “oh who cares about borat” listen as someone who is old enough to remember when it first came out, I said it then and I’ll say it now that shit has never been funny (also I’ve HATED sacha baron cohen since Ali G). Now this kid is young enough that I can fully believe he didn’t even know the character but it was the right thing to do to recognise it hurt some of his fans! No excuses, just a straight apology. wish we saw that more. like FUCKKKK MARK LEE for that bullshit. ALSO… Cortis concert is laughable like not to bring another group into it but other rookie groups have toured early on and you know what they did… a fanmeeting format with COVER SONGS!!!! hello it’s not rocket science 😭 it’s sooo low effort for them to just repeat the same songs like…

Koko3op

Thank you!!! Ooo i didnt even know it was something sacha related he's such a piece of shit!!!

their concept is literally working exactly as intended, which is probably why they’re the most successful 5th gen group rn. idk why yall keep acting like they’re out here pretending to be some underground indie band when nobody, especially the members, has ever said that. and saying they’re using a concept to hide a lack of talent is weird when every group relies on a concept. concepts are part of kpop. if they’re successful because people enjoy their music and performances, then clearly the concept isn’t carrying everything on its own. there’s nothing wrong with wanting growth from them, but yall are acting like they’ve been doing the exact same thing for 5 years. they’re literally not even a year old yet 😭 give them room to grow at least??? and if everything they put out leaves u wanting more then at some point yall gotta realize this group just isn’t for u and that’s okaaaay

Ana

The misinformation is crazy. I love how people develop an opinion based in what people who hate Cortis say and not based on facts lol there was no fake mosh pit. U simply have to search for the videos and see that actually fans ( mostly female) were doing their own mosh pit in the concert lol

Ana

Also Cortis does do just one genre and they don’t pretend to be underground? Their concept to me is way more rock start punk vibes, even if u see their other song that it’s not fashion or go, it’s way more alternative then anything else. And yes every kpop group has a concept, so it’s weird calling it not authentic. If there is something authentic in kpop rn it’s Cortis to me. They actually know what they are doing in every step, their lyrics and MVs reflect on their youth vibe. While there is so many kpop groups/idols that their concept or songs are so unrealistic that it seems that the company is just giving them a song, concept and that’s it. But Cortis the the problem for a whole industry okay

Ana

It is one thing when u don’t like a type of genre or don’t like Cortis songs that okay. But don’t lie now lol. Cortis don’t want to be next big bang or next anything. First Cortis artistic is in a lot of their choreos and you can tell that it’s Cortis choreo when u see, even if you like it or not lol. And I agree they have room to grow and it’s not even because they are lacking but they just didn’t show yet. Cortis is just almost a year group with 2 eps. It’s not like they are 6 yo group doing the same things and not showing anything else. Must be bcs Cortis got so big already that people are misunderstanding or forgetting how new they still are
