I’ll explain why people dislike season 1: fans, people who dislike AOS, and haters. So as a big fan of AOS, fans dont necessarily dislike S1. It’s just that the rest of the show feels like it’s on a different tier with characters, effects, writing, and plot. With seasons 4/5 being considered peak TV by most fans and critics. It’s one of those shows that only generally increases in quality with a very few dips depending on who you ask. Fans say get through S1 because when it aired a lot of people thought of it as a chore. Now as for critics they generally complain about the generic villain of the week and cookie cutter characters with cookie cutter personalities. The brooding action hero Ward The nerdy scientists FitzSimmons The tagalong rookie Skye Nobody dislikes Coulson even the haters of the show. A huge part of marvel fandom gave up on the show not even halfway through S1 because of that and they thought they’d see named hero’s and cameos throughout the show. And the show didn’t do as big as marvel wanted it to. I’m positive it only lasted as long as it did because they had die hard fans and it became its own thing also the creators started to branch out in their own direction which was good imo because the show became phenomenonal. It’s more popular now than when it was airing. After S1 it does actually feel like a different show because most of the cheesiness of it was gone, there is still cheesiness but you can definitely feel the growth of the show from S1 to S2, and the characters got so much unexpected development. Fitz and Skye being the main fan favs jumping to most fav throughout the series. My fav was always Coulson tho. This turned out to be a longer comment than I wanted but I hope this kinda explains the state of the show throughout its lifespan. At least this is what I observed. There are impressive things about the show I’d like to share but it’ll have to come in the later seasons.

One thing I think its important to add to the first comment. Behind the scenes, during the run of AoS, the ppl that made Marvel Movies were different from the ppl that made Marvel TV. The Marvel Movie ppl were the top dogs, and they ignored the Marvel TV ppl. This relationship bled into the Marvel fandom as well. Many Marvel fans decided that if the Marvel Movie ppl were not going to take Marvel TV seriously, then we wont either. So many ppl in the fandom never gave AoS a chance and would actively dismiss it.

I say this about Buffy and it is true for Agents of SHIELD also. AoS, in whole, is only as good as it is because of the ground work done in season 1. Season 1 has some of the best story arcs and twists of the entire show and it deserves more respect than it gets. We meet many of our core characters at the beginning of a big transition period. Coulson is back, but he is different and struggling with SHIELD secrets. May has been avoiding combat and hiding in paperwork, but has now been recruited to a field team. Ward is a lone wolf agent suddenly forced to work in a team. Fitz and Simmons are young scientists giving up the safety of a lab to help out in real time and Skye is a rebellious outsider who doesn't fit in with the rest of the team. Season 1 takes all these misfit characters, makes them a family and builds up the story in just a way to line up with the Winter Soldier twist and kick off a major story point moving forward; how to rebuild SHIELD in the aftermath of the worst PR nightmare in spy history? Looking forward to watching you go on this journey and how you enjoy the rest of the show.

I'm floored that you to a crack at my jokey " where in 5 years" question. Think Dodge's reply, where they actually steered it back to the topic made them mvp.

Season 1 was good but not even close as what's to come. The actor that plays Fitz is the best actor on the show but you haven't seen that yet.

I am not immersed in the fandom of AoS like I am with Buffy personally, so I didnt know that people dont think season 1 is good. I watched AoS when it aired and stuck with it until the end but this is my first time re-watching it and I liked season 1 at the time and I liked it rewatching with you. From my experience I remember the show getting a little too convoluted at times in the later seasons for me personally and I kind of like the "mission of the week" style of season 1. Also it feels like the show connects less to the movies as it goes on and becomes it's own thing and I was a big fan of the original premise where the show would tie into the movies and take place in the same connected universe and later on it feels like it totally breaks away. I actually just read a book about the MCU that was really good and they didn't go into too much detail on the TV side other than to say that the people running the movies (IE Kevin Feige and Co) didn't like the TV shows and had nothing to do with them. They seemed to kind of resent them and any cameos from people from the "movie side" happened begrudgingly.
