This episode was so much fun and so was your reaction, I think the scenes with the Doctor and Rose warm my heart enough that I can ignore Harriet Jones terrible behavior and not feel too bad about losing our bestie. Onwards to series 2! :)

An answer to your questions near the end: Regeneration happens when the Doctor takes enough physical damage to kill him. His body completely regenerates a new form to avoid dying along with his old form. Also, we do not have a new doctor every single season. It's just a matter of how long each actor wants to continue in the role. This show is a reboot/continuation of the original Doctor Who show, which began in 1963. If you hear someone mention New Who vs. Classic Who, that's what they mean. The original show needed a way to continue when the original actor of the Doctor could no longer play the role, so they introduced the concept of Time Lords "regenerating" in order to cheat death. The original run of Doctor Who encompassed the first eight Doctors, and the first season of the reboot continues with the Ninth Doctor. Now, we are watching the Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant.

To answer the question about broadcast dates, since that isn't a spoiler: the first series/season of Torchwood was shown between the second and third series of Doctor Who, and follows on from things that will happen in series 2.
