That week with no Doctor Who was tough 🤣🤣 awesome you got to return on such an amazing episode though lol. David Tennant always brings me to tears with his portrayal of John Smith. We never see the Doctor cry, like fully sob, and to see him do it is just heartbreaking. Fun fact, in Doomsday, there was a different take where after losing Rose he is seen as bawling and sobbing walking away from the wall but they cut it as they thought him being somber fit the Doctor more. Also Martha deserves a month paid vacation in just saying lol. Her getting the gun from the family and pointing out the bones in hands after being doubted were such highlights for her though.

Such an incredible 2 parter. Love the reaction as always. David is nuts as an actor, and he really gets to show it off in these episodes, it's a top 10 ever doctor who story imo, although the top 10 does change regularly for me, too many to chose from 😂

Tbh I’m glad you took that week off to emotionally prepare for this amazingly devastating episode 😂 i knew it was a good one but damn, I still teared up at the end 😭 it’s so good The way they manage to turn what could’ve been a silly lil “open the watch” identity switch episode into a debate about morality and the fleeting nature of life?? Seeing John Smith basically beg for his life… genuinely devastating. It’s a testament to how good an actor David is that you can FEEL when he switches to the Doctor, all of his mannerisms change, it’s amazing 🥹 And Martha ❤️ her moment to shine, and she carried it! She’s braver than me bc if the Doctor stuck me in 1913 on my own for 3 months we’d have to have a fight when he got back…

And I just noticed on this rewatch, because Tim is seeing the Doctor’s memories while he’s carrying the watch, when he runs away from the battle and his schoolmate calls after him “Hutchinson, you coward!” Tim yells back “Yes sir! Every time!” That’s a reference to Nine in parting of the ways! “Coward. Any day.” 🥹 Ears!!!

Is this an all-timer? I think it just might be. I always thought it was great. Watching it now though, I think it's even better. The multiple endings even work. I think I might be most partial to The Doctor laying waste to The Family. Sure we've seen him get mad at the Daleks. I mean he hates them. This feels different though. Them forcing him into the John Smith persona & the fallout from that made him get really vindictive.

Dang, don't f with The Doctor. They'll condemn you for all eternity. Really taking that no second chances declaration mega seriously here. This wasn't reactionary. This was methodically punitive, carried out with the coldest of deadened eyes. Those time war scars appear to have left an indelible on the soul.

What's probably most impressive is how great this is with very little of The Doctor. We get maybe 15 minutes of The Doctor across the two episodes. Obviously Tennant is there & he gives a fantastic performance. Still it's not often a show is able to have a top-tier episode with the title character not being in it.
