One of the best early season companions on the original show was a guy named Jamie who was a Scottish Highlander from the 1700s. Him and the second doctor were great together (they usually also had a female companion with them as well). So yes, the companions can be male.

Season 3 is just a warm up for seasons 4-7 ;-). And the storytelling just gets better all the way until (and including) the 50th anniversary episode. And yes, we all remember Donna. Not my personal favourite , but I’m glad you like her. Theres so much coming up that I’m so excited for you to watch. But I’ve avoided hinting at ‘spoilers.” …oh, and non-spoiler, the bloke who wrote Blink becomes the showrunner starting season 5. So more to come from that writer.

All of your suggestions for where and when he could pick up new companions were done in classic who. To varying degrees of success but it was never a disaster. So it can be done. As to whether it *is* done in the modern show, I ain't saying!

I forgot to mention before, but Darcie, after season 4 ends and before season 5 starts, doctor who went through a hiatus period in which they only released special episodes after the season finale, there's like 5 of them, and they don't have "numbers", so you'll need to check their names to be sure that you are watching them in the right order. But we still have time before it comes to that. Just a heads up.
