I just wiki'd this and I don't think it's a spoiler so: In his book The Writer's Tale, Russell T Davies reveals that the plan to have only specials for 2009 was to allow the new production team, headed by new lead writer, enough time to prepare for the full fifth series in 2010 :)

Michael Fallon

The specials were there to bridge the gap. I cannot tell you why because of spoilers, however it wasn't because the show was uncertain - in fact it was pulling in many viewers. The specials have an arc to them.

The show form series 1-4 was filmed pretty much back to back - with a couple of months break in between where the same production team worked on the spin off shows. There are other reasons like a new show runner incoming and Tennant wanting to do other projects. But I think the main reason was to give everyone a bit of a break after an intense 4 years of non stop shooting.

So glad we get to do a Christmas special around actual Christmas-time!

That hat and beard makes me think of famous, very silly (and very rude) Rachel Riley /Sean Lock comedy moment involving a viking helmet. There will be a clip on youtube, Worth checking out. Season 5 is great.

Neil Silverman

You're talking about the beard keeping you toasty, and that's making me want hot cocoa... so I'm going to go make some even though here as I watch this it's currently 58F (~14C) in Boston. Bevvie check!

There is a bit of a shift of leadership behind the scenes after the specials, so it's kinda why we had them. They also start filming in HD from Season 5 onwards as well, so they had some work to do to get ready for that. Also workload of 4 seasons back to back is tough! Season 5 was guaranteed and never in doubt - in fact it picked up a lot of international attention as well. This is peak popularity of the show I believe

This was the Christmas special and the next episode was categorised as an “Easter special” bc it aired during Easter and makes references to it (Get your chocolate eggs girly) and then the two others after that aired back to back, if that helps! 😊 Season 5 was guaranteed but there was a big shift behind the scenes and also tech-wise - Steven Moffat becomes the new showrunner, taking over from Russell T Davies, so you get more of his influence throughout the series (and more of his WRITING,) and the special effects take a noticeable leap forward, more in line with the CGI in other 2010 shows of that nature, so I’m excited to see your reaction Also, I can’t say much without spoilers (and I think you kinda get the hints in this episode anyway), but this run of episodes was definitely intended to feel like “Event Television” in the UK… Like, this is a journey, mama, we’re building to something 😮

Looove the steampunk Cyberking 😍 and Miss Hartigan is so cuntyyyy ofc she leads it Also the pub he invites the Doctor to being called “The Travellers Halt” and the Doctor is reluctant to stop there 😭 but he DOES! I have to go

The specials themselves have a purpose. They’re not just a holdover because the show was in trouble. These are basically the epilogue to the first chapter of the show.

I'm sorry but is it just me that can only get about a minute of this Christmas special?

Brian Huget

I believe David Tennant was doing Hamlet on stage during this time. I'm doing this from memory from when these were first aired so please forgive me if this is wrong.

YetiToBeDiscovered

YES I LOVE NANIAMO BARS.. (sorry i get a bit over excited whenever they are mentioned haha)

As you're now into S5, I'll provide some context for the hiatus. I've seen several mentions about parts of this anyway and I apologise if I'm completely duplicating comments. The plan for the Specials had been in place roughly since the end of filming for S2. Russell, Julie and David all wanted to leave together and agreed on 3 series but also knew that the new production team (whoever it was) would need a transition period and therefore potentially not be able to produce a series for 2009, and so one-off specials might fill the gap nicely. It also meant that the audience would stay hungry for the show and not start to take it for granted. Additionally, it lined up with David doing Hamlet as other people have mentioned. This ep (4.14) was actually filmed at the end of S4, with 4.15-4.18 filmed at the beginning of 2009 (4.15 three months before transmission!).
