Bookmarked for the train home from work lol. Earpods will be in. Nobody better interrupt me 😂. Super excited for the few shorts in this season too.

I was in 8th grade when this came on. I watched Eccleston back in 05, and missed all of Tennant. This was my reintroduction to Doctor Who

J

Like I'm not saying that Matt Smith was my gay awakening but I'm not NOT saying that

AppEyes

The Doctor visits a little girl, becomes her imaginary friend, then meets her again when she's an adult. All that's missing is a rotating fireplace! (ah you mention this at the end :D)

Welcome to our Farytail vibes Era

You are going to have an absolute blast with Matt’s run. He does an amazing job of picking up where David left off and becomes, in my opinion, one of if not the best doctor.

Jonathan Giles

Oh and Nebula from Guardians of the galaxy 😃

One of my favourite episodes - and a great first episode for introducing new Doctor/Companion. Matt Smith is up there for one of my favourite Doctors. And yesterday Matt was announced for a comic con in Liverpool with Karen Gillan, and I've yet to meet them so I'm going! I can't wait! You might know Karen (Amy/Amelia) as Nebula in the MCU, but she also played a character in an earlier episode - Fires of Pompeii - as one of the psychic people with face paint on.

Let’s goooooo! Not to hype it up too much but I’ve recently decided that this is overall my favourite season

Michael Jones

I'm surprised nobody mentioned it yet, but little Amelia Pond was played by Caitlin Blackwood who is Karen Gillen's (adult Amy) actual cousin. So, the resemblance between them is because they are actually related. One thing I love about the early days of 11 is that he actually is still trying to do and say the sort of things 10 used to do and say... but he can't quite pull them off. Steven Moffat once described the 3 modern Doctors up that point as "9 was a Tiger. 10 was a Tigger. 11 is an uncoordinated housecat who falls off the back of the sofa and tries to make it seem like he meant to do that."

Rae

Between the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors, I have never been able to decide which is MY Doctor. It's so hard to choose between them. They're incredible. My answer changes based on the day.

Michael Fallon

Great reaction! It does give girl in the fireplace vibes. Matt Smith is one of the best and he just gets better in the role. Yes, the Pandorica will open and Silence will fall are the new arcs. I agree that it is different enough but also still the same. The Doctor is still carrying all that weight that' came before and you can see that in Matt's performance.

James Miller

Series 5 and 6 are hands down my favorites of the entire New Who. I remember seeing pictures of Matt Smith just after they announced he was going to take the role, and thinking I wasn't going to like him. He quickly became my favorite modern Doctor, and is to this day. I think you're going to love the Doctor and Amy.

The Doctor collecting runaway brides like they're Pokémon

Future Academy Award Olivia Colman in basically a cameo is a trip but remembering the time now she's still a few years away from being a big time lead performer.

oh wow - i joined the Patreon a few days ago - and here we are already at my favourite doctor :) I've been binge watching the best eps of Tennant's run - am so stoked for Eleven

Paflad

I always get a bit nervous when reactors reach this point because this whole era is my all time gold standard for Doctor Who, but it's so divisive and I'm terrified they might go the other way lol So far so good though, I'm glad this went down well and I'm ridiculously excited for what's coming up over the next few years.

Welcome to the Scottish Era of Who - Moffat the head writer and Karen Gillan, both Scottish ;)

David Cann

I am so thrilled to be here for the start of Eleven's era! How exciting. As someone whose childhood was 10, I still remember going into this episode sceptical and nervous (with a new showrunner too) but good gosh, this stands up incredibly well as an opening episode for a new Doctor. Just so magical! The Girl in the Fireplace vibe to the opening scenes makes sense; you can definitely see how both episodes were written by Steven Moffat. Though elements of Aliens in London & The Christmas Invasion, too. Matt Smith is just... instantly the Doctor. That speech at the end, when he steps through the footage of old Doctors & declares "I'm the Doctor" is just hands-down one of my favourite moments in the show, full stop.

Em

This whole episode and therefore this video make me go weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :D so much fun!

Daniel McGuinness

Matt Smith is the youngest actor to ever play the Doctor! I like to think that the Doctor, on some subconscious level, chooses each face after regeneration to fit his emotional state or personality at the time, and I think 11’s incarnation definitely feels more energetic and carefree, compared to 9 and 10 being extremely guarded and angry in the immediate aftermath of the Time War (10 less so)

James B.

Eleven is probably my fav. If the Cat in the Hat was a Time Lord, he'd be Eleven.

Daniel McGuinness

New intro, new time vortex, new TARDIS, new Doctor and companion! It’s a whole new era baby! “That’s rubbish, who’s that supposed to be?” Is a fav moment ngl

Neil Silverman

I go back and forth between David Tennant and Matt Smith for my favorite doctor, but this is definitely my favorite Doctor Who season premiere. It's just so much fun! And now I'm back to Matt Smith being my fave...

SeeJay

Since you can't google how the companion actor is famous; after Doctor Who she landed a couple of major roles.... she headlined a US sitcom but it didn't really take off, her main roles are Nebula in the MCU (starting with Guardians of the Galaxy) and she plays an amazing character in the recent Jumanji movies. Deliberately keeping it somewhat vague as I'm not sure if you've seen these movies she's in. Another of her movies is Gunpowder Milkshake which personally I loved. They announced a sequel immediately upon release but we are still waiting!!!

Andrew Nicholson

Welcome to Eleven. My favourite era of the whole of Who. David was excellent, but Matt is brilliant. I think you’ll love it. Reliving it through your eyes is wonderful. Big hugs all round. guest stars: As Seejay says, Karen Gillan, later appeared in Jumanji, and plays nebula in the marvel universe. Arthur Darville, later in Sandman and Dc Legends of tomorrow. And of course you spotted Olivia Coleman. (I wont spoil exactly who is in later episodes, but i will mention… game of thrones, peaky blinders) . Oh and bonus fact, young amy is played by big amys cousin, but they never met until they were on the show. And as you’ve seen, Stephen Moffats stuff is so quotable! You already know “hello sweety”…now we get to add:”that was twelve years ago!”…”fish fingers and custard”…”bowties are cool”…”if theres no ducks, how do you know its a duck pond”…”hello, I’m the Doctor”, “the girl who waited” and “silence will fall”…etc. …and more to come. (Also,it never occurred to me until now how Amy & Rory enjoying dress up is a running gag. )

Joe Cleveland

Got introduced to your reactions via Domi. Just had to witness someone who went in so blind they didn't know about regeneration! I love how open you are to enjoying the crazy Doctor Who ride, whatever it throws at you. The only problem now is that having binged to catch up to you, now I have to wait a whole week for your next DW reaction!

Ray D

You are watching all the marvel stuff right now and Karen Gillan is Nebula is the guardians movies (although she is blue and bald so I don’t blame you for not recognizing her. I said it in my comments for 10s last episode but I’ll say it again, I love how Matt Smith’s 11 brings that chaotic, alien feel to the character. It’s like he looks human but you can tell there’s something that’s just not quite human about him. Where 10 feels more standard hero type 11 is frantic and weird while he’s saving the day. And while I do like David tenant in the role I think Smith is my favorite.

Steven Cooper

It's interesting how, in terms of its basic plot, this episode parallels the Series 3 opener "Smith and Jones" -- an escaped alien prisoner is hiding on Earth, other aliens pursuing it arrive trying to track it down, and the situation escalates into a threat to the entire planet -- but thanks to the change in showrunner, the differences in tone are striking. Instead of taking place in London, the whole story is contained within a quiet English village (a setting more reminiscent of the classic series than the Russell T Davies years), with almost no reference to the wider world at all. Both Steven Moffat and Matt Smith do a brilliant job in this episode, especially considering the pressure they were under of following on from RTD and David Tennant. In a retrospective article in Doctor Who Magazine in 2020 (celebrating ten years since his era started), Moffat gave some thoughts on the episodes of his first season as showrunner. This is what he had to say about "The Eleventh Hour": "This was a monster script to write. I actually did not have a particularly good time writing it, possibly because of everything weighing on me, and possibly because it's a very odd episode. Looking at it now, I think it's really good, and hugely entertaining, but what is the villain up to? What's the villain's plan? What's the jeopardy? It's like the jeopardy keeps reorienting itself to give Matt Smith another funny, brave or charming scene. It's not the most coherent 'alien menace defeated' plot ever. But it doesn't seem to matter, because it does the job -- I think, very well -- of presenting our new stars in their new roles. I think it's deeply charming."

Lesley

I’m sure someone has already recommended it but you should definitely watch Broadchurch at some point. David Tennant and Olivia Coleman crime drama and while of course they’re both great in everything, the performances in this in particular are off the charts. So excited to see how you enjoy eleven’s adventures!
