we're here, we made it - first episode of angel and im so excited!! 

also okay so i know the text everything is red in the show but when i was watching i just got purple vibes soooo thats angels colour in my mind. :)

I haven’t seen this episode in 20 years, I forgot how bad the vamp face makeup was, I thought it was just Russell but the vamps in the beginning also had bad makeup. When this spin-off was announced at the Buffy season 2 after party I didn’t think David couldn’t carry a show on his own but this first episode proved me wrong

Not only is purple easily my favorite color so you got points there--but purple is the complimentary color to yellow, which is the color you have for the Buffy episodes. So like...accidentally symbolic? Pretty rad

Yes, some of us watched Angel without having seen Buffy. I watched The Zeppo first, but that really doesn't feel like a typical Buffy episode. I got through the first season and a half when it was airing, and a bunch of season four before finally watching Buffy.

So funny story: I actually first got into the Buffyverse by watching Angel in syndication in like... middle school. I came across it while randomly flipping through channels. It was one of the later seasons and I didn't really know what I was watching, I just thought it was cool. I had no idea that it was a spinoff of Buffy the Vampire Slayer until the season finished and it rolled back around to this episode! The lightbulb moment came while Doyle was relaying Angel's life story for the benefit of everyone who hadn't watched Buffy and he mentioned that the girl from Angel's past was a "vampire slayer by trade". Of course, then I had to watch Buffy too to get the full story, and the rest is history. And yes Angel absolutely has Batman vibes haha. I like him much more on his own show than on Buffy... I think because on Buffy, we're kind of seeing him how she sees him (mysterious, dangerous love interest) as opposed to how he actually is (overly-dramatic goofball).

Remember Buffy answering the phone in her Mom's kitchen in S4/E1? No one on the other end? So this is why Willow and Xander cheated. X/C had to be broken up so she could move to this show. A lot of Buffy Season 3 is the way it is to set up this show.

I literally got a tooth extraction a few hours ago and this has been my saving grace for the day! Such a fun reaction. There are definitely some changes with the vampire faces and Angel is a lot more comedic but I remember watching this as a kid and loving the darker tone of this show. Also we got some Irish representation whoop! Can't wait to see what you think next week, it's gonna be a fun ride!

Yes yes yes! I'm so pumped, I LOVE season 1 Angel. And his voice does sound different, but I think it's a mixture of two things: 1) we didn't hear him speak nearly as much in Buffy, most of his dialogue was just short sentences/responses to what Buffy (or someone else) was saying. Not a lot of speeches. And 2) he was probably deepening his voice in BTVS (consciously or not) because of his Bad Boy, Tall Dark and Handsome character, whereas on his own show it's a little impractical to be using a fake voice the whole time (he may be an Angel but he's no Misha Collins😜👼).

As someone who wasn't a huge Angel (character) fan while he was on Buffy, I was happy to see him spin off because I knew he'd be more flushed out. So, unsurprisingly, I liked him so much more on his own show, but I do credit Cordelia being there for a lot of it. She brings out a great side to him, and I'm SO glad we didn't lose Cordy in the big transition between seasons.

So happy you're finally starting "Angel". The flash sequences are jarring for sure but they aren't used as much in the later seasons.

Such a fun reaction! And yeah, I remember the exact same feeling of being like ''A whole show about Angel?'' I also don't know if his voice changed so much as you're just hearing it a lot more, haha. I just love Cordelia in this episode as well, this show really needs someone like her. Can't wait to see what you think of the next ep!

You're right to pick up on the different tone, and I think Angel does a really good job of balancing the need to feel different from Buffy without being completely divorced from what made us all love the original show.

I actually watch two different reactors (Domi E & the male counterpart of Pennywell Production) who never knew this was a spin-off and watched it by itself. They eventually discovered that BTVS existed and are now watching it.

lmao I knew you'd love the overdramatic-ness and dry humour in the show. Yeah I don't know of anyone who likes the jaunty transitions, but you get used to it lol.

Regarding his voice, maybe it's an audio problem with the file you were watching? I think Cordelia's voice sounded weird too.

Fun fact: I actually watched Angel before I watched Buffy, though I did know it was a spin off, so I actually kinda like it better...mostly. I dont really like the later seasons but I'm like that with most shows. Anyway, so excited for more of your reactions! Gotta go watch the other episodes you have out already
