It looks like this episode is missing, but it has been an ETERNITY since you posted it. 🙃

You're right. This episode's pretty boring. I fell asleep during the last ten minutes.

Much like "I Will Remember You" was a great way to establish what the Buffy/Angel relationship was for people who didn't watch Buffy, this episode is a great way to establish the role Angelus plays for people who didn't watch Buffy. Up to now, we've only heard about Angelus (and seen him in a couple of brief flashbacks); here, we get to see him in action in the present day, if only briefly. The writers are basically looking directly at the audience and saying, "Hey, by the way, we could turn the protagonist of this show into one of our biggest villains at literally any moment. Have fun!" And it *is* fun--one of the top 5 episodes of season 1 in my opinion, along with "I Will Remember You" and a few episodes that are yet to come. The idea that a bliss-inducing drug could temporarily remove Angel's soul is a bit contrived (his moment of true happiness with Buffy was also temporary, and yet his lack of a soul lasted), but I just headcanon it as a matter of Wesley explaining it poorly because he's not clear on what's going on. I think the drug, in "loosening" Angel up, essentially suppressed his inhibitions (and therefore his conscience, and therefore his soul), allowing Angelus to come out to play briefly during the time it was active. The "happiness" aspect of it, in this interpretation, is just there as a writing device to bring to mind Angel's curse; any drug with similar inhibition-suppressing properties could have had a similar effect. (Which means Angel *really* needs to be careful around alcohol, at least in large enough quantities to actually affect him...) One minor gripe I have with this episode is that I think it slightly reframes what causes Angel to lose his soul. When Jenny's uncle explained it, he explained it as "one moment where the soul we restored no longer plagues his thoughts", which makes keeping him around sound much more dangerous than "perfect happiness" does, because the former sounds much less rare and much harder to avoid than the latter. Still, Uncle Enyos did also use the phrase "true happiness", so it's not really a retcon; however, it does strike me as slightly different from how it's been framed in the past, so I thought I'd bring it up. (I think this reframing is done for practical reasons, much like allowing Angel to be in *indirect* sunlight; it would be difficult to make a show about him if any moment in which he wasn't brooding about his past sins was a moment he could turn evil.) As for Angel ever having a romantic partner... I mean... said partner would have to deal with the knowledge that Angel could never be *truly* happy with them without risking going evil. That would be a tough burden to bear!

Love, love, love this episode. I hope you are buckled in!

Genuinely love this episode because it is just so ANGEL, ya know?? Like this episode wouldn't have been able to be made through BtVS in Sunnydale--this is a purely Los Angeles kind of storyline with the twist of the supernatural and that genuinely makes for some really awesome unique Angel episodes. Plus, who doesn't love a little Angelus showdown with the main crew?

I'll be honest, the fake losing his soul due to false bliss just... doesn't make sense to me. That said, this episode is off the hook with faux evil Angel. Your "so many things that would turn me bad" spiel at the end. You're fucking hilarious. 🥲 Also: love me some Seth Cohen/Adam Brody
