Okay, so. This is probably one of my least favorite episodes in the Buffyverse, even over the ones overwhelmingly regarded as awful like Go Fish or Bad Eggs. Those might have dumb plots or be a waste of time, but they don’t get me heated like this one does. Disclaimer: I don’t like Faith. This isn’t even directed at her too much, but it’s probably going to make me biased. This looks so unhinged since it’s like, the first comment, but I’m on my lunch break, so… Also these are just my feelings about the episode, not as a response to anyone or anything like that. Anyway. As much as I love this show, I think it has a real problem with the way that it treats Buffy when she makes an appearance. It casts her in a negative light, an obstacle to overcome, an interloper – almost an antagonist in this episode (compared to Angel's appearance in Pangs). I don’t think that this is necessarily a bad thing – lord knows I’ve had issues with Buffy in past episodes (*cough* Revelations *cough*). But I think that here it’s done very unfairly. I have no issue with Angel relating to Faith, and wanting to help her, but it’s the way he goes about it that pisses me off. He’s just very… uncaring, about what happened to his friends. Not super understanding. He claims to know what Faith did to Buffy, and literally saw the aftermath of her torturing Wesley but then continues to prioritize her throughout the episode when both of them, along with Cordelia, express discomfort. Faith doesn’t need to be a mistreated prisoner, but it’s very reasonable to be upset when the person who just maimed you is just sitting around and getting donuts. I think that Angel is too caught up in seeing himself in her. It's just the way that the episode makes Buffy and Wesley out to be the ones who need to come around (and then are basically forced to take her side due to outside influences – i.e., the Council) that grates me. Forgiveness takes time, and if Buffy decided that she could never forgive Faith, that would be a reasonable response. She literally states how she felt victimized by what Faith did to her. I’m not saying that it would be okay for Buffy to kill Faith or anything, but like? Come on, she is not being senseless here. The fact that Angel tells Buffy that this has nothing to do with her is ridiculous. Everything Faith did in Sunnydale just a few weeks ago was specifically to target Buffy. Buffy has given Faith so many chances and tried to help her – even when she had woken up from her coma, the first thing that Buffy does is express concern for Faith. Saying that she might be scared and alone. She doesn’t even want to go out and just starting fighting her when Willow suggests it. I’ve also seen a lot of people mock Buffy for tearing up once Angel hit her. But like, I feel like they’re not really understanding the situation. First of all, it’s not as if Buffy just decided to sucker-punch him out of nowhere. She made to go after Faith, and he grabbed her to pull her back. Is hitting him the best reaction? Of course not. But so many people make her out to be some hypocritical monster in this scene because of that. Secondly, she’s not reacting like that simply because Angel hit her- this is him taking Faith’s side over hers, right after he told her that he knew what Faith did to her (in Buffy’s eyes). Like I mentioned earlier, I think that this episode casts Buffy in a negative light, very unfairly, to try and continue to separate the two shows a little more and acknowledge that Angel is his own protagonist/hero/etc. That parting shot she made about Riley in their final conversation is a good example. I do think that everyone acted very in-character during this episode, but it’s the framing or whatever that causes these issues. It’s very easy to find a lot of people bashing Buffy and acting like she’s being a bitch or insane or mean in this episode, when her actions are very justifiable. Like, the way Angel says she can’t understand what Faith is going through? That has me seeing red, like what the fuck was that? I think part of the reason that the assault on Buffy and Riley had to be treated as more of an issue about ‘cheating’ and ‘trust’ or whatever is because if they had taken it seriously as rape then there’s no possible way that this episode could have ever worked. Sorry to make this even longer, but this is piece that I had read from someone else in a discussion about the episode that I think is a pretty interesting take: “Speaking of Graduation Day, I've always found it interesting that in Sanctuary Faith asks Buffy if she's "going to throw her off the roof, again" because that never happened. Faith threw herself off the roof in one final act of spite and to seal Angel's fate ("still not gonna help your boy though"). Either Faith is suffering some kind of coma-related amnesia or even when Faith is willing to change Faith still can't quite shake her perception of Buffy as this monstrous villain and herself as a victim (This Years Girl). It actually really bugs me whenever I rewatch that scene because Faith's tone reeks of self-pity and resentment and is a far cry from her very apologetic "go ahead" tone that she was putting on in front of Angel when Buffy threatened to "beat her to death." I'm not accusing Faith of being conniving and deliberately trying to manipulate Angel as such, but I do think her "remorse" in Sanctuary is somewhat insincere and feels like performance art. I believe Faith sincerely wants to change but I don't think she just flipped a switch in the space of 24 hours and went from someone who could sadistically torture a man out of seething rage to someone who is actually sorry for it. It's telling that when Angel asks Faith if she is actually sorry for what she has done to Wesley she doesn't answer. I also find it aggravating that Faith scoffs and tells Buffy "Angel said you'd never give me a chance." Firstly, Buffy is 100% right that Buffy gave Faith every chance and for Faith to say that proves me to me that she has a long, long way to go for owning up to her own faults and how she's treated people. Secondly, when did Angel say this? And even if he did I can't help but feel it's a sly way for Faith to drive a wedge between Buffy/Angel and is actually throwing Angel under the bus at the same time. It's a pretty irresponsible thing to say. Faith lacked patience for people to get on board with her rehabilitation. If people don't immediately embrace her and come around like Angel did, she reverts back to old habits and goes on the defensive again. Of course, I don't expect her to be perfect a mere 24 hours after she had her breakdown and turned a corner, but she's still very flawed throughout this episode and I'm so tired of people bashing Buffy in this episode without acknowledging everybody else's mistakes.” So, uh, to wrap this up – I think that this episode is interesting and complex, but the way that is frames the characters and their decisions is pretty questionable. A good way I saw someone describe it as was: AtS doesn’t have the same regard for Buffy as BtVS does for Angel. But tbh, more of my problem comes with the way some people view the episode. I hope that this doesn’t just read as incoherent nonsense lmao, and again, sorry about the length (I clearly had nothing to do). Not trying to come off as aggressive or anything to people who do like the episode, but these are my thoughts!

Kate said he was aiding a felon, but was Faith really a felon if she hadn't been convicted yet?
