Angel Season 4 Wrap-up

yeah honestly Charisma's acting this season was a little... unconvincing

Haven't watched the video yet, but I'll chime in to say when Season 4 first aired, I was very much not a fan. I really HATED it. And I hated Vincent Kartheiser (Connor) for it. And I don't think the DVD release changed my mind much just a couple years later. Now, looking back and watching it again, I didn't HATE it. I still don't love it, I still think the whole Connor/Cordie thing is gross and unnecessary, I can definitely see behind the curtain what was going on with Charisma that she's been so vocal about in recent years. But I don't hate Vincent for Connor's story arc - at the end he did what the writers and directors told him to do, which was play a whiny combative teenager who was being gaslit and manipulated by everyone around him. In light of that, I actually think he did a good job, even if I'd come to really dislike the character by the end. Unfortunately, Connor casts such a shadow across the season that it's hard to pick out the other stuff which was actually really good - Wes and Lila, Wes getting back into the teams good graces, Fred and Gunn and killing the professor, bringing back Faith, and the Jasmine arc. All really good stuff that was great drama and a lot of fun. So I can't hate this season anymore, I just recognize it as deeply flawed. On the plus side, it sets up Season 5, which I absolutely LOVE.

Thank you SO much for picking my questions! I would of totally worded more appropriate had I known it would be lol. Thank you for taking the time🤍

I find this season holds up better on a rewatch when we know that Cordy is bad and pulling the strings the whole time. For me personally, I’ve just accepted that the Cordy/Connor stuff is gross and doesn’t make a lot of sense (seeing it was a last minute rewrite). But ignoring that I love some much of the other stuff. Wes and Lilah, Fred/Gunn killing her professor, Gwen! (Who I wish we got more of), heck there is an Angelous/Faith arc that’s amazing (with a Willow episode thrown into the mix). I do feel like it’s a little bit of a bumpy ride to get there but from Angelous being awakened thru the end of the season, I think it’s mostly fantastic. It’s just sad that the behind the scenes stuff had to affect the on screen stuff.

The entire Connor story in this show is a big part of the trope that emerged in the genre of fast aging mystical pregnancies. We can simply say that it.... isn't popular. I will say that I actually have grown to appreciate some sections of this season a hell of a lot more on subsequent viewings (eg, the emergence of angelus right up to the willow crossover). One last thing: don't watch the opening credits for the first episode of season 5.

The Connor and Cordy stuffy is undeniably gross, but that is not what spoils the season for me. Not only does it make the scene where Angelus tears into them even more satisfying, but it gives Connor room to grow by putting him in the same position as Angel (trying to love your child even when they are making it hard to do so). What does bother me is how the show sets up the "Cordy is evil" twist. For instance, it would have been so much better if we never got to see the "visions" about The Beast that evil Cordy was faking. It's incredibly misleading (not in the good way) to show the visions and makes the twist feel less earned because there is no indication that Cordy isn't just acting out of character. You can definitely tell that Charisma is acting her character very differently, but I personally would have liked something more to make it more believable. I actually like Connor as a character. He's not my favorite, but only because I like the characters that we have spent more time with more. Even when Connor was being a raging psychotic, I still liked his presence in the show. I just think the idea of Angel having a son that hates him despite Angel's best efforts fits with the themes of the show perfectly. Maybe it's just because I liked the actor from another show before I saw him on this one though. I would rank season 4 as the worst season of Angel, but I don't hate it (I would even say I like it). The other seasons are just more polished imo. I guess that's what happens when you do a last minute rewrite.

Season 4 is my least favorite. Although the faith episodes are some of my highest ranked in the entire series, so it does have its good moments. Nothing can ever make the Connor/Cordy hookup okay though. NOTHING. A bus could totally fit in! Remember Fred's mom is a bus driver? She killed that demon bug with a bus! Lol I'm super excited for season 5! It is hard to watch a reactor and not be able to say if things will get better or even try to prepare you for horrible things, but we're excited to be on this journey with you!

Another great wrap up! Thanks for thoughtfully answering my question. I usually go back and forth on if Season 4 is my least favorite or if it ranks just above Season 1. Season 1 has a lot of fantastic episodes, but overall it has lot of growing pains and a few really weak episodes where as Season 4 has some unpleasant storylines and character moments, but every episode is pretty strong and builds towards the overall plot or keeps those plot points moving. Definitely a tough call for me. Can't wait to start watching your Season 5 reactions.
