Buffy Season 7 Wrap-up - FINAL PATREON

I actually kind of liked that we didn't get to know most of the potentials. Sure it made their deaths less impactful, but it helped put me in the same mindset as Buffy and I love it when a show makes you feel how the characters are feeling. It also had the added benefit of focusing on other stories, something this season desperately needed to get through everything it wanted to get through. Apparently, Emma Caulfield asked that Anya be killed in the final episode. Although the show was ending, there was discussion about a season 8 or a movie in the future and Emma was ready to move on. There is some poetry to her death in the sense that she started out not understanding humanity and why people are willing to die to protect what they love and now she dies in battle doing just that. However, Emma did not like how timid everyone's reaction was to her death and wanted to see more characters crying over her death. I think this season mostly suffers from trying to pack so much into it to wrap up the show. I wouldn't have wanted them to continue this season into a season 8 though. For one thing, everyone was extremely burnt out, but also the themes of this season are perfect for the final season imo. I would have liked if they added about 10 minutes to every episode though (that would also allow for Xander and Anya to participate in "Conversations with Dead People").

I sent you a message and sent you the links to those cool, movie style Buffy trailers I told you about 👍🏾.

That’s Not Acting

Day-one-gang! It's sad that it's over but I definitely enjoyed the ride! I've told you this but you are a top-tier human. Can't wait to see what you do next.

You know, it's interesting. I watched it back in the day, and I think s7 just got grouped into the highs of my personal fave seasons 5 and 6 and my view of it was a little rosier then. Now, I've watched a bunch of reactor rewatches and I feel slightly differently. I really love the idea of season 7. I love the overall plot of the season, I loved certain moments, I thought the finale was wonderful, but by and large, the overall execution of it? Eh. Lacking some of that buffy magic, imo. The characters are nearly all written in a way that comes off as out of character at varying points, and it feels like it was done to serve their personal and relational plot arcs, but kinda shoehorned in. Some of the lines are so cringy, and not in the fun ways I'm used to from our beloved show, in the ways I find myself physically wincing. (I'm also an actor so some of that it probably empathy towards them having to say those lines lmao) And if I'm being honest, a couple of the actors don't seem to be giving it their all, or the editors picked poor takes. Even with that critcal eye, I'm still so thankful for the way Buffy wrapped up. Watching the finale and comparing it to some modern day disappointments, I feel like we were so spoiled then and it set some pretty high expectations! And Darcie, you are the first reactor I didn't start in later seasons or skip episodes-- you even made the bad ones entertaining! It's been a fun journey with you :)

You have been and you continue to be a total gift. I can only speak for myself. But since I found you my life has been brighter. You have brought light into a dreary life.. Thank You so much.

So, the decision of who lived and who died was very deliberate. Whedon said there was no way Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, or Dawn could die and still give the audience a happy ending. There were several possible spin-offs in development, including one about Faith and Principal Wood, so they had to survive. That really only left Spike, Anya, and Andrew. Of the three, Andrew was the least likely to survive, which was why he did. So, a couple of things. I personally really don't like Season 7. I find entire episodes practically unwatchable. I felt it was paced horribly and the wrong things were emphasized. THE POTENTIALS - It's Plotting 101 that you don't introduce tons of new characters in the final act of a story, especially to the detriment of the leads. You'll notice that the only characters who really had arcs in Season 7 were Spike, Willow, and Anya. Everyone else is essentially the same person at the end that they were when the season began. You needed the potentials for obvious plot reasons, but the problem was the most prominent one was Kennedy, who, like, 99% of the fandom hates. Including me. I can't stand her. The obvious solution was to have Dawn be a potential Slayer. I understand why they chose not to, but I don't agree with the decision. We have the Noble Normal in Xander. We didn't need another. And the five minutes of TWIST! we got wasn't worth all that was lost. For one, Dawn would have gotten an arc, but more importantly, by anchoring the potentials with someone we knew and cared about, someone who would have had one foot in that group and another in Buffy's inner circle, it put Dawn in a unique position to bridge that gap. It would have given a more organic means of spending time with the potentials that didn't require Kennedy to be split in two equally annoying directions. KENNEDY - Yes, they received a lot of blowback for killing Tara and wanted to get Willow with someone else to calm all the angry fans down. I understand that they wanted to go with a very different character so that she and Tara wouldn't be compared. The problem is that Tara was very likable and full of positive, endearing qualities, which means that if your goal is to create the opposite of that, she's going to be deeply unlikable, which a lot of the fans found her to be. Especially because of how she kept pushing Willow's boundaries after repeated warnings WHEN SHE KNEW Willow was grieving. The whole situation was handled badly. The whole thing came off as forced and uncomfortable, and all the worse because Kennedy is fairly wretched character to begin with. ANYA - Her arc for the series was over in "Selfless," which was a FANTASTIC episode, but it was only Episode 5. After that, she's pretty much dead weight kept around for a few laughs and to be fattened up for the slaughter in the finale. She's basically in Season 7 just to die. Honestly, her death really belonged in Season 6. It's more in keeping with the theme of growing up and accepting responsibility. Imagine it this way: Anya gets left at the altar, becomes a demon again and the rest plays out more or less the way it actually did, only compressed, and her big moment in Episode 7x05 comes at the end of Season 6. Then she dies nobly as a final testament to her fully realized humanity. It's nice and neat. And then, without the burden of spin-offs steering the ship, you could kill off Faith and Wood, which come to think of it, would have been really great ends to both their character arcs: Faith redeems herself with one huge act of self-sacrifice, and Wood finally puts the mission first, fully understanding and accepting what his mother always tried to tell him. But, you know... that's just my two cents.

This was a great wrap up Darcie. You getting emotional got me a little unexpectedly emotional too. Buffy probably ranks as my personal favorite show, but I vacillate on a few somewhat more obscure shows sometimes. I'm really looking forward to where you go next. If it was purely up to me, I'd probably point you to Dollhouse since you clearly like Eliza. Completely different note for what it's worth: My personal season rankings from worst to best currently stand at: 1, 4, 6, 2, 7, 3, 5 - and that's very subjective considering two of my favorite episodes are in season 6 and one is in season 4.

It's been so wonderful experiencing this through your eyes. Thank you so much!

I personally thought Anya's death was pretty poetic. She embraced her humanity, and in the end stood against her biggest fear.... bunnies! Or what she imagined to be bunnies when she was psyching herself up for the last fight. Did you know Emma Caulfied wrote a eulogy for Anya? I'll link it in the discord!

Duuude Darcie you got me emotional 😭 I love that you loved it so much ❤️ I had to unsubscribe from Patreon cause I’m out of job with my first baby on the way but man I wish I could stay, I want to see your reaction to Angel season 5 and the reaction to the comics and the rewatch, I’ve loved your reaction from the very beginning. Maybe I’ll get to catch up later. Are you going to change de tier prices now that Buffy is over?

I will definitely be back to watch season 5 of Angel at some point. Thanks for the great reactions which have kept me entertained through a few difficult years. Random comment time can't remember if I ever said but at some point you were talking about putting spiders outside as you didn't want to kill them as a side note some spiders live in the house so this may actually kill them something i found out a few years ago maybe they are a lot tougher in Canada though.💪
