Yeah the simplest answer is the culture. During that time of Korea's history, Gucheon who has a low status, wouldn't be able to have much power in the palace. The writer has actually given him a lot more freedom than I expected based on the way he walks around palace freely, and the way he speaks to the Princess and sometimes even the King. But yes the writing has some weak parts, expecially in how the real pond spirit is revealed. The approach was unnecessarily confusing. Oh and Gucheon is trying to save the King because if he dies, the next in the bloodline would be the Princess. He doesn't want her to die because she risked her life to bring him back from the ghost world after he turned into an evil spirit, saving his life. With the romance, it's intentionally written like that. As a low born person, he cannot fall in love with someone of high status. So he keeps his feelings hidden and does not acknowledge or act on them. To the audience, it seems obvious that they like each other although they are not allowed to do that. The writer is being intentionally vague about the romance, so you could say they're just soul mates or they're in love. It depends on whoever is watching.

ugh i can't wait for the last episode!!!

That is the point of the story. He comes from the low status, and also, even if he were a nobleman, he would have to do the same, as the king's word is absolute. Other things regarding romance: you can see he never initiates touching her other than in dare circumstances. He is doing all this more to not save the king but the princess as she is a royal blood and the spirit would go after her. He is doing it willingly for her.

Yes, it's definitely a very different culture from the ones in the shows you're comparing. I like FLUFFFANTASY's comment that Gucheon is actually choosing to stay and protect the princess. Remember, he had a chance to leave at one point because it seemed like he had saved the Crown Prince, but he lingered because something still seemed off. It seemed like it was too easy to defeat the pond spirit. He was worried the Princess was still in danger. That would've been his out to quickly get away. He could've gone into hiding or maybe even gone to another country, but he stayed willingly. No one forced him to do that. He chose to risk his life. So it's realistic in that he was put in that situation at first by force, but in my opinion, he ended up choosing to stay on his own terms, even if it meant risking his life. To me, that still makes him a strong protagonist.

Good point about the romance part. They already spelled out in this show what would happen if someone of low status got with someone they weren't supposed to, lol. Remember one of the men from the former King's guard messed around with one of his court ladies, and they both ended up being executed.
