Allegra is very accomplished and good at what she does, but can't see her own potetial to do something greater and move on and up. I think she's afraid to move forward and subconsciously keeps putting herself down and remain an intern. She needs to get back that confidence when she initially broke out of the family-norm and got a job that wasn't handed to her, but she got on her own.
