EDIT 8/6/24 - I've watched all the Scooby-Doo films as well as Amy's Pick, which was bird movies (Storks + Guardians). Not sure if I'll review everything here as a big single post or what. Probably gonna be at least two this batch.People at the signings said they really liked my audio reviews where I talk about movies. Which is nice to hear!

Unfortunately, to review animated movies, I have to watch them. So here's a list of some animated movies I have not watched yet that might make... some kind of interesting review.

You can vote for as many as you think would be interesting.

I'll put asterisks after to the ones that I guess I'm interested in. Heavy quotes.

Ryan Skelly

I desperately want you to watch the DnD "Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight" animated movie one day. It's my go to bad movie to laugh at

BeastAlchemistVA

Boy and the Heron was a movie my family and I couldn't get into but everyone else seemed to love. I'm like, did you guys get what was happening in the movie?

TiredOf Everything

I run an open season fan discord where we drink heavily and “boog out” we make custom open season gifs and even are trying to track down the og open season fursuit from the movies red carpet

TiredOf Everything

It would mean the world to us if you even thought about open season we talk ab it so much

Evan McKee

I feel like watership down is the most interesting to experience, although maybe not as interesting to review.

SlimeCharmer

WOOOO LETS GOOO also after hearing about it at the signing I kinda wanna hear all the stuff that gets cut in the edits

JelloApocalypse

Okay Open Season just went from the bottom of my list to the top, but only if your discord can make a Tier List of the movies and I get to see it afterwards to see if I have wildly divergent OPEN SEASON OPINIONS

JelloApocalypse

And to be clear, I do not want to see this list until AFTER I'm done. I must form my own opinions.

JelloApocalypse

Very, very little. Amy was just shy being in an actual booth so we had a false start, that's all. I sometimes step out to get a drink of water or something and I cut a long pause.

TiredOf Everything

Do we have to include the shitty go animate looking ass cartoon from 2023? The good people of bimbly shall make your tierlist

Drednot

It's not animation, but if you want a bad live action movie with a weirdly high number of animated film VA's in it, look up slappy and the stinkers. A little rascals esq film with two of the rocket power VAs, the voice of Shang from Mulan, and Jennifer Coolidge. Weird little fever dream of a movie that I rewatched the other day

Drednot

It's also free on youtube

Emereldmaster333

I saw The Bird and the Heron and it makes me very angry in a way where. have so much to say about it. I would love to hear your thoughts

TheOneAndOndi

We gotta make him watch Peak Birds

Meg Ryan

EARWIG and the witch AND OPEN SEASON films. Those are pretty awful animated films.

Juliaaaaaaaa

Technically you’ve already seen it/touched on it a bit but I’d be interested to hear your full thoughts on Turning Red (esp since you gave it a 9+almost gave it a 10)

Chandler B

Man, I love animation and I have to say…I was very disinterested in Orion and the Dark; I got like 20 mins in and it wasn’t doing it for me. You should def watch it

Snack_Daddy

Wait they made more than one Open Season movie?

Juliaaaaaaaa

You talked about your issues with how the generational trauma aspect was handled in ur KCA video

Daniel

Surprised to see Boy and the Heron here. Not cause I love it, i havent seen it, but people seem to like it quite a bit

Lucy Parkinson

I didn't mind Legend of the Guardians, but I'm happy to have that middling review challenged

Your Moist Toast

I'm voting for trolls because you've said on a few occasions that you like the trolls movies, at least more than most people, so I'm curious to hear why

BringBack1996

not giving us the option to make you watch all the alpha & omega movies smh

Jurei

I really want to hear you talk about Scooby because I like that stuff a lot, but also I want to hear you talk about Despicable Me 4, as I feel it has the most reason to exist than really any sequel has had for a while(from my own experience as an only occasional movie watcher)

Weegee83

Oh, a whole bunch you wouldn’t believe it

JoeJoeBinks97

I'm eager to hear your thoughts on the Scooby-Doo and Courage the Cowardly Dog movie!

Sivvak

Best of luck with the animation trenches. Would love to hear your thoughts on Mamoru Hosoda's body of work one day! hopefully it goes down better than makoto Shinkai's stuff

JelloApocalypse

This horrible thought slinked through my brain and I went "no. Open Season is on there. I have offered enough."

Finn Underwood

While I do think you should see Watership Down, I don't think there's much to talk about regarding it. It's a pretty decent movie which does a good job telling the story it wants to tell. The only reason it has a reputation is because the cover has cute cartoon rabbits so moms in 1978 didn't notice it was for adults, causing kids to watch a mature film about the brutality of nature. But the film's never been about the gore and it's relatively tame to modern standards, so its reputation as a bad gore-flick is misplaced.

DragonRageLee

Out of curiosity Jello, have you or would you ever watch Bojack Horseman?

Eremiss

Plz watch The Boy and The Heron and explain it to me, because I don't fucking get it even a little bit lmao. Could not tell you what it was about, even if you paid me money.

Chandler B

Also, having seen Earwig and the witch--its very much not a good movie, BUT if you think of it as part one of a series its passable enough imo....too bad its part one of a series that is never happening

Legend Account

Frankly, I like Jello, but I don't think he's the best person at analyzing symbolism and very heavily interpretable art. He's really good at understanding and criticizing narrative but in terms of stories largely driven by themes and surreal situations I don't think it's his area of expertise.

PurpleIsDebeste

I remember really liking monster house when I was the age demo for monster house but I’m not sure how much I want to make you suffer…

PurpleIsDebeste

You talked a little about it in the encanto review

Folkloric

I’m of the opinion that narrative builds themes; themes are based on what happens in a story. Stories meant to be heavily interpretable (to me) often fall flat because so little actually happens, or they're too vague, or the stuff that does happen has no rhyme or reason behind it, that the story doesn’t end up saying anything? Just my thoughts.

JelloApocalypse

Agreed. I think the trick with art that is designed to be open to interpretation is that it DOES actually need an intention behind it in the first place, whether or not that intention is the one the viewer figures out. I took an acting workshop with J. Michael Tatum once where he described acting choices this way: If your character is written to be angry in a scene, the instinct is usually to project that rage through shouting. But you don't have to. You can project that anger through a quiet laugh or an icy stare. Even a smile. Sometimes, the audience resonates more with those interesting choices than the standard ones. The actor might have intended the smile to mean "I don't think my character would be THAT angry, so they're playing it off like it's no big deal". However, a viewer might interpret that same smile as "Oh, they are about to SNAP they're so mad." The point is that intention and choices made with intention can be read by an audience in more interesting ways, even if those ways aren't necessarily "correct" or the way the actor intended. In my experience, a *lot* of work that is touted or defended as "open to interpretation" fails to have actual thought behind its choices. It's obviously not universal, but certain artists use ambiguity as a crutch. They pick evocative set pieces, props, and visuals not because they think they mean anything or there's a theme they're trying to convey, but because they like the thing's vibes. This can create shallow work that isn't fun to interpret. You get more out of deep interpretation the more an author puts in, even if their work is EXTREMELY esoteric. Also, frankly, a lot of people are just terrible at media literacy. The average viewer assumes competence on the part of the creator as a default, so any mistakes or gaps in the storytelling are filled in by the audience's mind because "Certainly the storyteller must have a plan." This is why soap operas and things like CW shows that are written week to week with no plan in mind whatsoever are still popular. If everyone recognized that they were seat-of-their-pants garbage where nothing mattered, they'd lose most of their audience.
