Twenty-three movies reviewed in a single post! The theme this time around is Birds and Blue Sky animation!

Apologies for the occasional clicking sound in this. I was playing with a lighter while voicing and I didn't realize how audible it would be.

After many moons, we are back with a frankly insane amount of movie reviews! This round's theme is Movies About Birds and all the Blue Sky movies I've never watched. But, because it's me, there's also a heaping helping of Scooby-Doo! on top.

We got owls. We got ducks. We got turkeys. We got storks. We got all the Open Season movies because you guys are mean and voted for it.

Here's the god-awful editing I talk about for Scooby-Doo, Where Are you Now?

oh man there goes my sleep schedule

Justice Hainsworth

I definitely think “How Do You Live?” is a way more interesting title for The Boy and the Heron, and it’s not even an adaptation of the book, the book itself just shows up in the movie and ends up meaning a lot to the main character due to that little note from his mom in there. I can’t think of a whole lot of movies that have done that; maybe Naked Lunch but at least that was about the actual person that wrote the book. having not read it I wonder how much the actual book means thematically to this movie. I mean it’s a bit of a self-explanatory title but i imagine theres some other connection from such a blatantly referenced source like that.

dollqueen

It's a shame the scooby mockumentary sucked considering a few years ago tumblr had a meme where they made fake interviews pretending the characters where actors except Shaggy was possessed by an ancient demon whenever he played shaggy who is an all powerful being so there IS potential for comedy & intrigue.

Azelhia

Not gonna lie, that sounds awful and not funny.

Benedict Ide

"These things mix like chocolate milk and hornets" is my new favorite simile, thanks.

BigMoffers

Funny how you didn’t bring up the plotline in band together where Poppy has a secret sister midway into the movie. That was a plot point and a character that didn’t need to be at all in the film in my opinion

Conner K

I am sorry you had to watch all 3 Open Season movies, but I'd vote for it again

Ignis Astrorum

So I've never seen Open Season but for some reason I did own the Open Season videogame on gamecube and it was just bad, so I think I got the same experience as watching the movie

BigMoffers

That’s fair. What would’ve been funnier to me is that they still have the Poppy saying “Gosh I wish I had a sister.” The whole movie While her dad acts suspiciously nervous joke. But the sister never shows up in the movie. Leaving the audience wondering if she does. And have her show up In the possible fourth trolls movie, like three years later.

BigMoffers

Oh wait! You meant you did! My bad I listened to this when I woke up at 4 AM and I saw that you uploaded this.

Olli Starr

I do love the fun cliffnotes of your post-movie research I must say.

thewitchbasket

Oh my god, Legend of the Guardians is my favorite Zack Snyder movie. Funnily enough, Animal Logic did the animation for both LotG and Happy Feet. They were the best in the business for birds for a little while there in the 2000s. Weirdly enough, they changed the setting in the movie to Australia instead of America. Idk why. Subjectively, LotG is a 9/10 for me—it came out when I was 8 and as a weird girl who loved birds and fantasy, I was 100% on board. However, adapting the first 3 books into one movie was such a bad idea.

Legend Account

Still very disappointed that you don't like Only Yesterday lmao. Also BTW I was the guy who said I didn't think analyzing very symbolism-heavy art is your strong suit. I think I got that impression with how narrative-focused rather than theme-focused a lot of your analyses of things are, including movies not intended for children, and I think you also said something along those lines in the Makoto Shinkhai review.

thewitchbasket

You managed to perfectly articulate my thoughts on the Trolls franchise. World Tour goes so hard and I’m sad Band Together was so much worse

Folkloric

Surprised you didn’t mention the slug and snail with anime jiggle physics potbellies from Epic. I remember them being awful and gross and creepy.

JelloApocalypse

I definitely hold dialogue and narrative as the most important thing in media but I think theming falls under the narrative umbrella. If I find something thematically weak, it's usually because the narrative wasn't strong enough to successfully carry the themes. Thematic issues on their own come up a lot more when I talk about video games, especially on streams. In that medium there's an extra level of interactivity that can play into the themes, so it's not just about narrative but it's also about mechanics and I find that interplay much more interesting. Makoto Shinkai wishes he knew what themes were lmao.

JelloApocalypse

I mean if you were a Weird Little Girl then yeah this movie is designed to be crack cocaine for that demographic so a 9/10 makes sense.

JelloApocalypse

Also,I wanted to like Only Yesterday so bad but I just hate that Isao Takahata's movies actively make you feel bored and antsy by showing you boring uncomfortable things for two hours. I think he's making exactly the art he wants to make and I think he's doing it successfully. I just hate it, lmao. Especially because literally all of his movies except GotF end like "THAT WAS TWO HOURS OF DEPRESSION. YOU KNOW WHAT WOULD'VE CURED IT? BEING A FARMER IN RURAL JAPAN. I'M ISAO TAKAHATA."

TiredOf Everything

Anyways thanks again for basically hosting an open season movie night for us! Remember to boog out!!!

Bricks and Broadway

I can’t be the only one who’s made this joke but nevertheless “There it is! That’s the SKROOM TRICK!?!?!?!”

PrettiestBeardedLady

I loved the Ga'hoole books as a kid, they do not get less insane as they go on.

Legend Account

Fair enough! Not everyone likes everything. I suppose where we differ is that I *don't* find Only Yesterday boring whatsoever. It definitely moves slowly but the simultaneously universally relatable and very specific nature of Taeko's life and struggles are extremely compelling to me, and I think offer so much more than just "life sucks". There are harder moments but these, I feel, are balanced out by moments like Taeko giddily dreaming about her first crush or connecting with another girl getting bullied about menstruation. But anyway, if you don't connect with something you don't connect with something, and that's completely fine. I also haven't actually seen a Makoto Shinkai movie so I can't speak on whether his movies are good or not, I was just talking about a particular statement you made that I very vaguely remember, where you say something along the lines of not being very good with really vague, artsy, dreamlike stuff. IDK I could be misremembering.

PurpleIsDebeste

The film that did the “Daphne is useless” running bit where she’s the leader was actually Trick or Treat Scooby Doo (unless sword and the scoob ALSO does that exact same joke) Which works a *little* better cus that films a homage to the og Scooby, and it means the ending kinda leads into 13 ghosts. But it’s still like… a 30 year old satire

Noahdivergence

For the original Curious George movie, I actually recall that one having some really gorgeous hand drawn, stylized animation. I'd recommend giving that a watch next time you do some of these batch reviews.

verdragon 5

The Aziz Ansari slug is annoying, but the snail is good

Drednot

"Illumination is Blue Sky's fault" Is quote of the year

Chandler B

I have to give Trick or Treat scooby doo points for the wacky character animation in it; there was so much and it was just fun to look at. Can't wait for Warner Bros to do another one!...right?

BoatHungry

I keep coming back to listen to the Ga'Hoole segment and I am in TEARS laughing every goddamn time

Michael Seth

Just started listening to this and right at the start you said you reviewed every James Bond movie. And that sounds amazing to listen to but I can't find it anywhere. Was that just an example? Or is it something coming up?

Michael Seth

Thanks! It wasn't in the Jellow Reviews tag so that's why I missed it.

Justice Hainsworth

bit of a fun postscript: i did some thinking and remembered that the only other thing i’ve that does anything even close to what Miyazaki does with “How Do You Live?” is Jean-Luc Godard’s 1987 “adaptation” of King Lear; which actually isnt an adaptation of King Lear at all and is really a vaguely post-apocolyptic indie movie about a handful of people attempting to stage King Lear but keep getting sidetracked and distracted by French Cinema-isms. again though, i cant quite say this is the same as “How Do You Live?” because King Lear is in large part an elaborate ruse by Godard to essentially troll his producers into giving him a million dollars, however it makes me weirdly happy to think about the fact that Miyazaki opted to do something ive only seen happen in experimental french new wave cinema.

Sivvak

Yeah Ga'Hoole!! When I saw that on the list I felt like I'd seen a scroom (ghost). Your comment on the books being like crack for 13 year olds you were spot on. I LOVE those books as a kid and I loved how wild they got. Already a wild series even before they reveal it's post-apocalyptic and all the humans died off. As silly as it is I still have a soft spot for it - thank you for checking it out !

Flakops

form of wolf mystery van

Chandler B

Also Jello I love that you love Hadestown. I could listen to you talk about it for hours. Maybe hot take, and I do love Reeve Carney's orpheus, but I always loved Damon Daunno's orpheus from the old workshop recording.

Folkloric

The snail was not actively gross, yes. But they're the comic relief of a children's movie, so I wouldn't describe either as, "good."

Folkloric

It sounds like how each book in Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive is named after an in-universe book. Or Stephen Moffat's Jekyll–

Self_Respecting_Strawberry

I laughed out loud at the “close to you” bit, not at the song, but at the fact anyone would sit through any of these (open season).

Miranda Tagliamonte

The crazy flashbacks I got hearing the songs from the Sneeches short for the first time since my childhood

tumbleweed🍂

Cannot emphasize enough how thrilled I was to have almost a full hour of Scooby. It feels so vindicating to hear someone else who doesn't like Happy Halloween! I never hear people critiquing that movie and it eats me alive

JelloApocalypse

I genuinely don't understand why people like it. It's so hoaky, but in like a mean and cynical way. Not a fun "stupid Lego movie about friendship" way.

Bast 13

Ga'Hoole being edgy crack for 13 year old girls is one of the most accurate things you've said. I was obsessed with the violent owl politics

Lemon Moon

Ok so I could have sworn that people hated Epic when it came out, and also that George Lucas directed it, calling it his “Star Wars for girls”, so I looked it up and it was actually the movie Strange Magic that I was thinking of.

Filler Channel

Very specific question here that your Horton section reminded me of — Jello, have you seen Halloween is Grinch Night? I loved that special (especially the songs) as a kid and I hardly ever see it mentioned.

JelloApocalypse

I think I've watched it once in passing. My sister's a big Suess fan so I'm at least aware of it.

B-beau

The rise of the guardians bit made me lose it so bad i had to get up and walk around

Jetstream

4 months late, but just wanted to point out the reason nobody reprises their roles in the Open Season movies is because every movie after the first was direct to video. And even the first one was only modestly successful. It's a "franchise" in the same way as those terrible Alpha & Omega movies.

Candaru

I actually watched Storks when it came out, and I remembered it being better than most animated movies. When you brought up the wolves, I instantly remembered how funny their Villager News style gag was. I'm glad my memory wasn't wrong!

Candaru

I also read the Guardians of Ga'Hoole books when I was in elementary school, I was SUPER into them. I never read Warrior Cats, so this was my edgy obsession. I never watched the movie, though.

LuperisLua

That power puff girls clip was reaaally badly done oh my god

BeastAlchemistVA

My family and I watched The Boy and the Heron and we left it having to read the Wikipedia page for it because we just couldn't understand what was happening. Like we were confused by certain character moments and motivations and we just weren't really vibing with the movie at all. A Ghibli movie I will most likely only see once

ConstantlyBen

18:00 That is one of the funniest facts about the bayformer movies. Because as a kid I'd leave those movies thinking. "Man. The military sucks and is bad at everything" There are scenes in the first and second "yellow smoke" or red in the first. Where the main characters are bombed by the military and have to run away because their in the smoke. Also the military is constantly being really indecisive and finicky when helping the autobots. I love transformers and this video isn't about them. But the fact the military thought they were a promotion is hilarious. (I watched 86' as a four year old AuDHD baby. Its burned into my brain like ash in a milkshake.) It's a real shame with Scooby-Doo and looney toons and others. Warner brothers have absolutely fantastic creatives. And bottom of the barrel higher-ups that try to strange their staff with the strings that hold up the set-lights.

Lucy ligma

rewatching the parts of storks that I remember and yeah im crying. crying a lot.
