Some friends of mine watch movies every Monday night. For the first half of 2026, they watched Barbie movies every week. They watched through 44 Barbie films in all.

And I was there, Gandalf.

I was there.

A cursory online search reveals that ever animated reviewer so-and-so and their dog seems to have done this marathon already. I hope you will enjoy my version regardless.

Timestamps are below. So many of these movies are exactly the same as each other that I've decided to group them into four "categories". The first time a new category comes up, I describe its general format, which ends up saving about an hour per category in the long run. I never want to look at another fairy as long as I live.

The worst movie I've seen in years was in this marathon.

pictrable

Muse

Oh boy, I loved Fairytopia as a little girl because I adored the wings, I wonder if it holds up as an adult -Hellish chorus plays in Jello's introduction- Is there good fairy media for little girls ;; winx is also rough and Sugar Apple Fairy Tail ain't for kids

HeavTheAnge

“when you’re a little girl being a princess isn’t about being a real life princess, it’s about getting what you want and wearing pretty dresses and everyone is nice to you and treats you like you matter. Because when you’re a little girl people don’t listen to you.” 15 minutes in and i’m already getting gut punched (was a huge barbie/disney princess little girl who wasn’t listened to all that much). thanks man.

Bird Krow Fly

I can't believe the CDI Zelda games were actually a Barbie movie the entire time

SwalotOracle

When I was a kid my cousin forced me to watch barbie movies with her and I remember being scared and/or disgusted by the animals so I am glad you pointed it out. This will help me heal the barbie scars in my not so barbie soul

HeyyyScout

I looked up Sunburst because I remembered liking her design when I was younger. I immediately realized that little, closeted me just thought she was pretty had a crush on her. I guess that was the true magic of the rainbow

Gabriel Davis

love that barbie princess charm school just has an "ultimate lucky student" type situation

Gabriel Davis

fascinated by people using these reviews as like bedtime stories to fall asleep to

clottedscream

for the "my dog just died and this movie made me feel nothing" you might be thinking of frankenweenie because i did have two different dogs die during two different movie marathons we watched together but I can go back and check if you'd like

clottedscream

yeah sorry we watched awful wisconsin puppy adventure while lexi was still alive

CallistoDragon

so this is an import factor about the barbie movies is they come packaged WITH the dolls these are straight to DVD films that are not available in any other way you have to buy the doll. so a lot of elements of the film is directly influenced by the doll the 'final evolution' is typically the doll and several came with an 'action feature' for example: 'A Mermaid Tale' the dolls hair would turn pink when wet 'Mariposa & the Fairy Princess' the wings could be folded down to make her skirt and there was a button on the back to make them flip back up EDIT: the ugly classic era children are once again based on the doll models

Luveygold

I don't think this is true. I have many of these DVDs and grew up without a lot of these dolls, plus I've seen them individually at retail. Dunno if this was only with certain movies and only during prime barbie movie releases but I do not remember *any* of that. I know there's almost always a gimmick with the dolls but I am almost certain they could be bought without having to purchase a doll.

JelloApocalypse

I have memories of seeing some of these doll lines advertised on their own on TV (especially the mermaid ones), so I'm with Luvey here, I don't think the exclusivity of the doll packaging was true. I think the goal was to sell a DVD that also featured relevant doll lines, and if a kid liked the movie enough they would be incentivized to get the dolls too.

Sam Lewis

Fully not a thing that's always or even usually true. I don't know if it's ever true.

Sam Lewis

Barbie in a Fucking Death Game

Ram

Barbie Twelve Dancing Princesses had a dance mat adjacent thing that plugged into your TV. I don’t know why it had that but my sister had it as a child and I think one of our cats peed on it

clottedscream

im never gonna get alessandro juliani's fucking musical number in princess and the pauper out of my head god its been MONTHS

CallistoDragon

i swore i only ever saw the dolls that came with the dvd as a kid. possible it was a misremembered thing or maybe the toy retailers where i grew up figured they could upsell if they only stocked the package deal sets

Dullanight

It feels like The Barbie Movie can only really navigate the concept of The Patriarchy through Feelings and that's where a lot of it's problems come from for me. Ken patriarchy is bad not due to any systems of enforcement like real patriarchy, it just brainwashes the Barbies into being okay with it by existing. Barbie matriarchy (which depending on what point of the movie you're in is either A Stand-In For Patriarchy or The Good Thing We're Trying To Get Back) is bad because it makes the Kens feel neglected, it hurts poor Ryan Gosling's feelings, but the fact that the Ken's have zero systemic representation or homes can be a punchline. Whenever one of the Real Women talk about the system of Patriarchy it's about how it makes them Sad and Tired. It almost touches on the patriarchy being a system built to empower men and disenfranchise women when it goes to the real world but then when that is taken into the Barbie World it's not An Abusive System Of Power, it's A Bummer. And we only ever really resolve the existence of The Bummer, because I guess telling kids they could take action against systems would be too radical for Barbie, but if you don't want to do anything about Patriarchy why frame your whole movie around it! Combined with the *overwhelming* amount of screentime Ken ends up having, it feels like this movie's only conclusion is "Women can solve patriarchy by being there emotionally for men", it's a very baffling and tiring movie to me. This set design could've been used on something that thought about its own internal politics for more than five minutes. Anyway the best (not actually the best but my favourite) Barbie Movie is The Barbie Diaries I love that they put Mean Girls on my Sega Dreamcast, they should've given her Ryuk too.

LiterallyHoping

The PPM (Piss per minute) for the first minute of this audio is very high. I hope this ratio holds up for the remaining 5 hours and 15 minutes!

Ignis Astrorum

I'm not sure given 50 guesses I would have guessed what is wrong with one of these three villain's rats. what do you mean "Two of them are normal, one of them is a mime."?!

LuperisLua

The Elephant from Barbie as the island princess is truly the most horrific 3d model I've seen.

SonicPsycho

The princess and the pauper villain sings like rick shades talks

LuperisLua

The Barbie Princess from Barbi: The princess and the popstar sounds like fucking Eleanor Shellstrop from early season 1 of the Good Place but if we were supposed to believe all her jerk behaviour was totally fine, and actually she should be in the Best Place.

CogSentient

oh thank you mr. apocalypse for this glorious gift. the next 5 hours of my 12 hour work day are now covered.

yaboyrobin

aw yea happy birthday to me let's go a long review

PurpleIsDebeste

“This is the first movie with Raquelle” you’ve sold me, no wonder you liked it so much, raquelle is a treasure

Redstone Nick

My favorite part of these reviews is when Jello tells you about a bad joke that the movies do, but he delivers it properly so when you hear the actual audio you realize it's so much worse than you could've imagined

PurpleIsDebeste

You can tell Barbie As The Island Princess is kind of good by barbie standards because jello actually remembers Ro’s name

PurpleIsDebeste

“We’re fairies from the magical realm of GLOSS Angeles 💅” ick they spilled some monster high in my barbie movie

SmurfsFetishist7

From what I remember the Tinker Bell Movies are ok

dollqueen

Iirc the movie dolls had scenes from the movie on the back of packaging. Also iirc2 at least one of the Fairytopia dolls had both transforming wings AND you could use her as a remote to play with in the special features. It'd make sense if that one came with the movie.

dollqueen

Watching a barbie movie > ask if the movie is actually queer coded or comphet > they dont understand > pull out a megathread explaining what is queer coding and what is comphet > they laugh and say "its a queer movie sir" > check barbie movie > its comphet

clottedscream

i feel like it's worth mentioning in Barbie Perfect Christmas i think our running joke was not only that the christmas workshop was a cult, but since it was an exceedingly white lodge of christians in the rural midwest, that they were specifically get-outing people? these movies are so, SO white

Chrono101034

the sudden cut at 59:00 after "bibble you have to be brave........ the jumbo-" got me so fucking bad and i dont even know why

Blue Glasses

You know what a good version of "Friends never say goodbye" is? Han Solo in the original Star Wars. It's not the characters arguing that has him leave, it's just that his job is done getting Leia to the rebels, he's gotten paid, and that's it. And then he comes back after having a change of heart for the final Death Star run, showing that he is willing to fight for something bigger than himself. Easy character growth right there, they don't even show him having the change of heart on screen. It's almost like this type of writing is so easy, a clown in bloody human skin could do it.

PurpleIsDebeste

the puppy chase poodle sounds like an actor from a church of the rock play…

Tea

1:30:00 "And she calls three rats... two of whom are normal, one of whom is a mime" is a line that i ADORE. I remember watching Ted Nivison's Barbie movie video and experiencing the dawning horror that a sleeper agent being read his trigger phrase and remembering an entire hyperfixation i had buried in my mind, and I'm beginning to think it was actually a really vivid fever dream i just assumed was real

Babblegum

I owned the DVD for barbie and the magic of pegasus and it notably came with a cardboard pair of 3D glasses; because this movie (which I believe was the only barbie movie to do this) had some 3D scenes. I don't remember all of them, but I DO remember that the scene where barbie is in the soup pot was in 3D so you could see the big ugly CGI troll man drop carrots and potatoes on you. It sure was an experience.

FrozenPyro

I remember you posting this on Bsky and and I can for sure say I'm not surprised Puppy Chase is a 0. It's. Not. Good. Almost borderline abusive considering how the plot tries to twist itself into saying Barbie's right even when she's royally fucked everything up.

JelloApocalypse

She even gets an "I messed up!" breakdown moment, but instead of the lesson being "Yeah, but you can learn from this." all her sisters are just like "No you didn't! :)"

Bebop-G

Maybe the real gewgaws were the bOOks we read along the way.

tumbleweed🍂

(angry spongebob fish) HOW am I supposed to consume this audio review without my SPREADSHEET?! My color-coded SPREADSHEET! But for real, A Bisexual('s) Review of Every Barbie Movie from anyone else couldn't make me excited to drive to DIA next week. I sure hope I don't get grounded in Pittsburgh with no way to get to Paris before the big fashion show!

Tea

4:16:31 made me CACKLE

FrozenPyro

"We lost our dogs, lost our cart in a Austin Powers bit, were stranded in the wilderness all night, had to walk up a mountain, and almost ruined our little sister's chances in the competition because you had her focus on what YOU wanted, but we love you, Barbie! :)"

SemiSweetAbbyT

My sisters and I grew up with these movies and I was quoting some of your review to them and we were all laughing. Cause when you're little its like "of course there are magic fashion pixies and the animals are terrifying. You gotta pick the movies with the least freaky animals". Its also a great track of how bad the tie in merchandise gets. I had the Mariposa doll as a kid and you could tell there was care put into the production of the costume and the wings. Looking at the new ones they look way cheaper or even get rid of half the costume and just print it onto the doll so they dont have to worry about it but you end up with a doll that can only wear a skirt and it will ultimately sit in the barbie pile while you play with your actual favorite. If you want a funny story the Diamond castle movie used to terrify me as a kid because the bad guy hypnotized one of the girls and I refused to watch it past the opening. Yay Barbie!

BigMoffers

1:18:43 I can’t tell you how many soundtracks as a main theme or song from a soundtrack that starts with that same damn Melody. I legit can’t, but I know I’ve heard it more that thrice because it activated me like a sleeper agent. I’m not a soundtrack guy but that is like the basic bitch of motifs.

Folkloric

I like the implication that the Swiss aren’t supposed to speak French

JelloApocalypse

It does strike me as "almost exactly Ariel singing her voice away to Ursula" from The Little Mermaid

CitKat

did you ever consider that actually the fairytopia world is actually a weird timeloop and barbie is just re-living the same situation over and over again with minor changes

PurpleIsDebeste

damn, barbie really said “fool me once? no ya didnt!”

Tea

I haven't rewatched The 2023 Barbie movie, so i don't know if this was set up very well, but i assume the intended message of the ending with Barbie becoming a "real girl" was that, the opening monologue is about how the Barbies think that they fixed feminism, and after the events of the movie she concludes "ok obviously i was wrong, and remaining in Barbie land where i cant fix anything but im comfortable, is selfish, so I'm even if it sucks, i want to become real so i can start helping real women in the real world. " I do agree that the individual scenes are really good and that the connecting tissue is weak (like it does make sense for Barbie to not want to go back to the real world but it would also feel weird thematically)

Yali Litman

I have never been more excited than when i scrolled by and saw the numbers on the reviews. This is going to be awsome

Beramious Clockwork

44:28 id like to imagine if this was a video this part would be a picture of Bibble with flames behind it

PurpleIsDebeste

i think the mostly unrelated to everything scene where barbie sees an old woman and finds her beautiful was meant to be setup that barbie finds these “”imperfect”” real women living normal lives amazing and wants to be like that?

Loke Ho

Felt very validating hearing about the live action barbie where i felt like it was good on the whole but didnt quite work thematically

Lucy ligma

hearing the princess and the pauper songs after forgetting them for years made me smile so much and start tearing up. its like hugging an old friend

Lucy ligma

like I started singing along almost involuntarily. the words just escaped me

Lucy ligma

its just so whimsical

Freshmin

In the end, I couldn't bring myself to hate Bibble.

Lucy ligma

Barbie: Princess Charm School was my childhood film. it really is a flu movie. not a film to watch it you have the flu, but a film that makes it feel like you have the flu. your stuck in a haze where things might be happening but you just... bleaghhhhh and then the next scene starts. I liked Porsha

NICOtine

I knew that princess and the popstar used some of the songs from the og but oh my god that's so much worse than I could have ever imagined even with your lead up

Drednot

When you were talking about the last animated movie and mentioning the other barbies side mission about cooking, i kind of just imagined them puts a whole unopened package of bread, random herbs, a full jug of milk and a block of cheese into a large soup pot and then just pulling out full plates of spaghetti.

MasonJar

Been on the fence about whether to throw my precious $5 here for a few years, but this long ass review on horrible 2000-2010's movies convinced me, already worth every penny 10 times over, thank you gelatanous "The Most Horrible Event in Human History"

JelloApocalypse

oh jesus people can put IMAGES in their comments now???

BP-Bludgeon

3:21:20 "Star Wars for Girl" My brain immediately went "Star Wardrobes"

Lucy ligma

the ending may not work but it did make me cry

Ricky Conrad

I saw you doing this on letterboxd and have been soo excited for this audio review

Freshmin

You have to be a woman. You HAVE to do it.

Yali Litman

4:17:00 The lesbian song fucking got me dude

JelloApocalypse

It's weird how that works sometimes? There's a lot of Pixar movies I actively think suck, but their "make you cry" moment still works on me. Emotional critical hit but structuralist nat zero, I guess.

Brevin

From what I remember, the Barbie: Epic Roadtrip movie is basically a "choose your own adventure" version of a Barbie movie, similar to the Black Mirror "Bandersnatch" movie. It falls in the same general quality of the more "grounded" Barbie movies, i.e. the ones not about mermaids or princesses and shit. It was taken down off of Netflix when they purged all of their older interactive stuff to make room for their new Netflix Games division, which is just jackbox type stuff

MasonJar

Yeah you might wanna put some guidelines on images in comments eventually

rosemarythorn

The dumbo octopus- fucking got me

Shijin89

I forgot how much i liked the music in Princess and the Pauper

McChicken-chan

Have I listened to the whole thing yet? No. But I know you gave Princess and the Pauper a 7/10 and therefore all your takes are objectively correct.

TempoRainy

Was really surprised when Jello didnt comment on "kingdom-dumb dumb dumb", and was subsequently quite pleased when he brought it back for a later joke

Hamyton

So like it’s weird the Barbie girl song says undress me every where right? Like Barbie is a teenager ish

Luveygold

This is a Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse joke which means the animated movies would *never* do them

Flakops

five hours?? we are SEATED

Fanboyistransboy

Barbie Princess and the Pop star was the first time I realized that a movie could be bad when I watched it as a child. I was like 7 years old and watching it kind of made something click in my media literacy brain where I realized I was no longer impressed by the pretty pink dolls dancing and singing. I had like begged my mom for a toy from the movie and when I watched it with my friend (who had the taylor swift barbie from the movie) all I felt was immense disappointment. I think it was important to my development but I wouldn’t recommend it

Daniel

Tinker Bell review marathon speeding towards a head on collision with the Patreon at this rate.

Rebecca Bieth

I assumed all the weird Mattel execs stuff in Barbie (the good one that was in in theaters) was a compromise Greta Gerwig had to make to even get the movie made in the first place. I imagine she prolly had more criticisms of Mattel as a company, but the most they would allow is the sorta hollow acknowledgement that positions of power in the company have largely been held by men, and in return they had to be depicted as being, at their very worst, bumbling but well-meaning in everything they did. And if that's really what it took to get the rest of the movie made, then, I guess, fuckinnnnn, whateverrrrrrr mannnnnn.

Onslow Bell

It makes sense that the early barbie movies feel experimental and genuine if it was made by Mainframe Entertainment. I remember their work on shows like Transformers Beast Wars and Reboot in the 90s. It feels like they were giving it 100% on the animation front. A lot of it holds up to this day. I have not seen most of the Barbie movies myself, my main touch point being Life in the Dream House. I would love to see more of Mainframe’s earlier work.

Lemon Moon

The dragon prince style is generally called Stepped Animation, for the way the motion graph looks like stair steps between each frame. Usually 3D animation is automatically smooth but with stepped animation you can try to make something look more 2D or stylized in general (in terms of the movement)

RockemSockem

My headphones died in the middle of the Barbie racism fest and I appreciate them saving me

Deepdishattack

I’m rewatching this because my toddler found some old barbie toys and wanted to play with them. My wife thought we should put on an old Barbie movie for her to try out. At one point she said “I heard people say that Fairytopia was ok”. Thank you for taking the bullet watching these movies so that I know which ones to object to.

Daniel

I love going to Charm Schoo.

Danielle Crews

Man, I wonder what you'd think of the Barbie CD-ROM games now. That shit was so dumb and silly, but kinda fun in its awfulness? Who knows, maybe my brain is colored by the lens of getting to play Barbie Horse Adventures on ps1 and feeling ALIVE as a child.

Maddie Russel

The Barbie Movie was kinda soured for me in the first scene where it went full historical revisionism on Barbie/doll history. There’s been playline dolls explicitly stated to be teens/young adults prior to Barbie existing, and boudoir dolls based on adult actresses of the time. I mean Barbie’s doll was originally stolen from a German doll (named Bild Lilli) that was meant to be sold to adults. The rest of the movie follows suit, where it tries to position Barbie as always being this feminist and inclusive property. Meanwhile the first bipoc doll came out just about 20 years after Barbie’s release around the 1980’s, and has had a litany of anti-feminist doll concepts/props over the dolls lifespan. The film just came across to me like a 2020’s pop feminism response to 2010’s pop feminist Buzzfeed critique of Barbie.

ver.

I LOVED Princess and the Pauper as a kid, but even then it felt off to me that Annalise’s central character conflict was “I like boy but I can’t because he’s poor :(.” It’s sad because it could’ve been such an easy fix, too - they should’ve made Annalise a geology nerd who wants to contribute more to her country than being just a pretty face for a political marriage. That way, she’d be a hero by being able to recognize that the “rocks” in the mines were valuable, instead of finding that out by complete accident. It’d make her more interesting and actually bring to attention how royalty doesn’t save her from the oppression of misogyny. Instead, the impression Annalise gives to the audience is “I wear slave-made dresses and my maids bring me breakfast in bed, but I want to READ BOOKS”, which is INCREDIBLY tone-deaf when Erika goes “yeah, I’m that slave who made that dress” and Annalise goes “omg fr? Ur my new bestie <3”

BandanaDog

He hit the pentagon with this one.

Ray Jaxxon

Jello I was so fucking scared when you said the classics were boring UNTIL YOU SAID RAPINZEL WAS THE BEST ONE IN THE WHOLE SERIES THANK YOU

BandanaDog

Thank youuuu!! You've perfectly encapsulated my feelings about The Barbie Movie(the one from the theater for movies) and how odd it was

JelloApocalypse

I feel like this is kind of an uncharitable read. The opening is very obviously facetious. It's not being presented as fact, it's a gag. As for the idea that Barbie's history has had lots of sexist designs and marketing... yeah, that's kind of what the movie is about. The Barbies in Barbieland are positioned with the (explicitly incorrect) take that they saved all women and are feminist icons, but literally no one on Earth sees them that way. I have other issues with that spect of the movie but I think calling it "historical revisionism" is missing the surrealist nonsense tone the movie is going for. They don't literally claim there were no dolls on earth until Barbie, who arrived like the monolith in 2001 a Space Odyssey.

Lucy ligma

I think for a main factor barbie in particular is what was I made for is a really good song. spider man brand you day also made me cry despite me disliking most of the movie and the fact that large swaths of the movie are morally reprehensible propaganda and product placement

daFroakie

You say Barbie Christmas Carol has a relatively fresh premise for a Christmas Carol adaptation, but this kinda just sounds like a lame version of Scrooged. One with none of the spectacle and interesting aesthetic choices.
