I just released my Every Pixar Movie Reviewed in 10 Words or Less video, and already the comments are flooding in! "Why do you like Cars 2 more than Cars? " "Why is Toy Story 3 the best one?" "What's wrong with Inside Out?"

Well, comment no more! Your questions shall be answered!

Actual reviews start at 3:45. Disclaimers:

Spoilers for literally every Pixar movie.

I do the films in chronological order, but I also group sequels together to talk about them all at once. EX: Toy Story 1-3 are all at the start.

The 10 Word reviews are PG. These are not! Explicit language warning.

The shorts aren't on this list. If you want my personal recommendations go watch La Luna, Lou,Day and Night, and For the Birds.

OF SPECIAL NOTE: I have very strong opinions on Ratatouille and Inside Out. So much so that I was considering not even doing my usual Top and Bottom 3 just so I could talk about them, but even then I wouldn't have had enough time. Most of the dissenting comments on the video so far are about Inside Out and people say I didn't rate it high enough. If you want to see my reasoning for a 6/10, check out these timestamps:

27:52 - Ratatouille40:13 - Inside Out

Comment below if you'd like to see more of these, or if I'm basically just shouting into a microphone for my own sake and nobody cares! :D

Still listening to this now!

DrDepper

I enjoy hearing your thoughts about things, good way to past the time in the car or when I'm just bored at home.

Sheldon Nerdleberg

I liked Coco, but I do hate how every Disney movie now has to have the "Friend of the protagonists was actually the villain all along" reveal (Frozen, Zootopia, others I'm sure I'm forgetting). It can work, but I think it's overused, and it means the antagonists are usually underdeveloped or rushed.

smeick

I honest to god love listening to these kinds of Podcasts! Then again i did start supporting you here mainly because i love the TOTT series you and will do, so no big surprise there.

KC Clark

Hey, hoping a comment here might be a little more visible than through the sea of YouTube comment spam. I came out of the video with pretty strong feelings, and specifically wanted to jump on here and dive into your long-reviews of Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Toy Story 3 (I also went ahead and listened to your talk on Up to help support my argument). Upfront, I'd like to say that I found what you said on Wall-E, Ratatouille, and Up, especially listening to them back-to-back-to-back, to be incredibly hypocritical. Just as you cannot ignore the flawed parts of Ratatouille, you cannot ignore the second half of Wall-E and both how different it is from the first half and - in my personal opinion - how far it falls behind the first half in quality, regardless of how much you are bothered by the environmental messaging. Let’s agree that the first 40 minutes of Wall-E is a 10/10 (it’s borderline between 9 and 10 for me personally, but for sake of argument we’ll say 10). The first 10 minutes and last 5 minutes of Up are in my book a 10/10, and from what you’ve said I believe you would also rate them at least a 9 or 10. Simply put, the way you talk about these is completely different. Every film besides Wall-E, you give proper attention to in full. The Wall-E review is truncated, even in the long form, only to your favorite / the best part of the movie, which is not a benefit given to the other films. I think the most apt comparison - and perhaps my other biggest disagreement point with your reviews (besides that The Good Dinosaur was awful, but that doesn’t tie well into my argument here) - is between Ratatouille and Toy Story 3. I believe that, like Ratatouille without the last 25%, or Up without the first 40%, Toy Story 3 would not be nearly as lauded without the first 5 minutes and the last 5 minutes. The second act loses focus far more than the earlier Toy Story movies did (thus why I actually prefer Toy Story 2 - it doesn’t rely on one moment, it has many great ones littered throughout, including the opening, Woody’s imagined scene, the part with the Cleaner, the reveal of the memorabilia, Woody’s Roundup, and Jesse’s backstory). Additionally, both Ratatouille and Toy Story 3 bank on using those specific moments to appeal to a specific audience - Ratatouille to critics and artists, and Toy Story 3 to those who saw Toy Story as kids. Frankly, you said to watch the first 40 minutes of Wall-E and gave it a 10/10, so you either need to judge the film as a whole, NOT just glossing over the second half (or giving a solid defense of it - would you really describe it as a 10/10 or even a 9/10 on its own?) and telling people to skip that part if they want, or you need to take into account the option to do that with the other films as well - Toy Story 3’s beginning and ending can be watched together as a short film epilogue to the original movie, and Up’s opening can be viewed as its own short film. I would take the former option: if Ratatouille’s excellent ending and mediocre beginning/middle average out to a 6 in your book, then properly address Wall-E’s second half and make sure you factor it in to the overall score. Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, and Toy Story 3 are ALL 8/10s in my book, each with their disappointing parts and their amazing parts (whereas other Pixar movies like Toy Story and Monster’s Inc are simply strong throughout, though perhaps never reach the same peaks). A more minor point about Ratatouille, as it doesn’t have the same benefit of being able to watch the best part without the rest of the film’s context as the others, I think that the storyline with his family is far from bad, and actually resolves pretty nicely as Remy finally asserts himself to his dad, and in turn the dad supports him while still staying in character - him coming to the conclusion that just as the rats band together as family, he should do the same for his son. If I had to break the movie into parts, I would give the “Linguini” plot a high 4/10, the “Family” plot a high 6/10, and the “Ego” plot a 10/10. Of course, now I’m going to go and listen to the rest of your reviews - as, at the very least, I’m interested in why Finding Nemo, my favorite Pixar film, is only sitting at a 7: apparently good yet mediocre by Pixar standards (which honestly, I’m not even sure if your standards for them were THAT high, despite what you said about Inside Out being awful by Pixar standards as a 6/10, because there were few movies you lauded as “amazing” in their library, and fewer still of those ratings that I agreed with).

Sarah Ma

I absolutely loved this long version review of the movies. It almost felt like a podcast to hear your thoughts more in depth and while the youtube videos are very enjoyable for the quick laughs and simple ratings and recommendations, this felt far more interesting and engaging to me. Whether I agreed or disagreed with your points, it felt much more like a discourse than a 1-off and I personally love things like this. I listened through the entire hour, and would 110% listen to any long versions you do for the other marathon reviews as well.

CS1

Loved the extended thoughts. Even if I don't care too much for the films you're talking about, you still talk about them in an entertaining and captivating way.

EmiLightning

Fantastic, man! I'm so glad to finally hear all your thoughts and why you ranked the movies how you did. It's great to be able to understand some of your choices that I personally didn't agree with (yes, I'm one of those people who adore Inside Out and I'll defend it to the death-- but your reasons make sense, and if you can't overlook that stuff, I can see how it might ruin the experience of the movie overall). I won't take up too much space in your comments with my own thoughts about the movies, but who knows, maybe this will inspire me to review them myself sometime! :) Hope we get to hear more of these in the future!

Alan Kase

These are great. I'd listen to them if you were up to making more.

jeanluc laurent gagnon

I really loved this dude. Literally just created a patreon account to comment this. I listened to the entire thing in one sitting and was hooked the entire time. You are so down to earth, engaging and funny. Love your videos and really loved this!

Br0wnEyedQueen

Dude, yes! Jello, I love you. Completely agree with your bit about Merida and Korra. You can see they tried but failed but failed blindly (is that makes sense?) A very important, I would say THE most important aspect of telling any stories is the art of subtlety . I watched all of Korra and in the beginning I was okay with her being kind of a brat and naive and entitled because she's the avatar but her character never grew or really learned anything then she just completely fucked up with the lore of Avatar and is all fuck tradition or sacredicity (that's not a word - things that are sacred, like the spirit world or the avatar connection) and I just really hated her after than but everyone loves her being she's "strong" - yeah, she could probably beat me up with those arms but she doesn't make smart decisions. I am really sick of this blatant character trait that is almost required now for female characters if they're trying to be these feminist icons that they just have to be able to physically take a man in a fight to be a real woman, it's a tainted type of vanity that shouldn't be aimed towards young girls to aspire to be. Same with Merida - my memory of the movie is a little hazy, haven't seen it in a while - but she was just boring and I do remember watching it and how she keeps raving about not wanting to get married and it drove me nuts because she never explained why! Just because her mom said she has too? That's pretty weak, it would've been better for her character if maybe it was because her father left them or whatever so she doesn't trust men but both her parents are alive (that's kinda standard too but what do I know?) that would've been a little interesting but nope, it was an annoying attempt at a mother-daughter/"pixar's first princess" movie where both of them are just badly written characters.

Wyatt R. Mineau

I really enjoyed listening to this. Going this in-depth really adds to your believability as a person that understands movies, and stories, and characters, and I honestly, if you had the chance, would love to here more on the older 10-words reviews you've done. I'd love to hear more in-depth opinions on movies that were good that everybody thinks is bad.

Angel Alfonso Ku

I've been a fan of the Reviews in 10 Words or Less series since the first one, and I've honestly been waiting for a kind of long-form post like this since I read the text post you made expanding more on why Zootopia was your number 1 Disney film. This is exactly the kind of content I'd love to see more of, as I really enjoy reading the thoughts of fellow critics of media. I'd love to see more recordings like this in the future!

Cedric Bombs

I really enjoyed this Jello, would love to see you do more

Parkivich

More of this! You kept me interested for the full hour, and even though I disagreed with some points I could totally see where you were coming from. I thought more critically about Pixar movies thanks to you. I'll still rabidly defend Coco against its detractors but I acknowledge the flaws in some of my favorites.

Cass. Wyvern

This podcast type thing is super neat. In fact it's perfect for listening to at my boring workplace. I think I might even become a patron. It's always super interesting to hear others' detailed opinions on stuff. But Coco 10/10 best Pixar Film. Well, it's my top Pixar film at least. Edit: My own opinions aside, I think it would be great if you made more of this.

Ashi the Writtre

Hello! I actually just created a patreon account simply because I wanted to comment, haha. You are SO AMAZING and I freaking love all of your content!! I'm a content creator myself (but I more write novels than do art - but dude your art is so awesome!! I am in love with Nuco!!! The atmosphere, the characters, your style, aaaaa it's so uniquely wonderful!!!!) so it just... I always love listening to other content creators. And I tend to feel like my opinion are just not shared by anyone because I'm sometimes a bit of a critic as well except you share a lot of my feelings so just thanks for existing and making me feel less like an outsider hahaha. I love what you do! This video was simply amazing to listen to and you are so amazing and I really trust I can one day make friends with content creators like you because you... you're just such a cool person! I wish you the best of luck in all you do!! I'll be keepin up with your content. Have a nice day!

Sarah Leathers

Hello Jello! As a fellow content creator, I absolutely understand wanting feedback for new things! So firstly, yes I listened to the whole recording, and I liked it! You've got a great sense of humor and a pleasant voice to listen to, I like hearing your thoughts on the Pixar films, particularly Ratatouille (a film I like but feel has so many flaws.). If ever you wanted to post more of these I think that would be great! I really enjoy your work, thank you so much for everything you do!

Bobo Kitty

While I may not agree with all your view points, I enjoyed listening to this.

Pedro

You make very strong points! However, I still think Inside Out is one of the better ones. I noticed you didn't mention a lot of the movie, in fact you seemed to want to skip the middle of it for some reason? As you mentioned, it's a travel story. Travel stories are MADE out of sequential misadventures. You focus too much on the origin and destination, and not enough on the journey. Is the tube a plot hole? Maybe. It doesn't matter, though; the main problem the characters faced wasn't that Joy and Sadness were unable to return to headquarters, but that they couldn't work together in a time of crisis. The story wouldn't make any sense if they could just immediately return to headquarters, and Riley wouldn't be any better off. They did actually need character development, and it happened by way of fun adventures inside abstract representations of brain parts. I agree that Riley isn't very interesting, but she isn't supposed to be. She's the setting: she's supposed to be as relatable as possible, so that the viewers can make connections to the way their own brain works. If Riley had any unusual characteristics, that relatability would suffer for it. She, much like a silent videogame character, is a blank slate. I agree that the other emotions should be more fleshed out, like Fear in that scene. Disgust and Anger were pretty much just comic relief, which can feel a bit stale, especially in the middle of such heavy drama (kinda like the gargoyle scenes in Hunchback of Notre Dame ). Sadness isn't boring. She's adorable. And, while in my first viewing I did think Joy was a lot meaner than the marketing was trying to paint her, I think the movie ended up being better for it. In fact, they should have made her even meaner, and given some more meat to her redemption arc of sorts. That'd probably make the journey more worthwhile. Wow, I ended up writing a lot more than I intended. To finish things up, I think you should definitely make more of these. Properly constructed arguments are a joy to hear. Props to you!

Pedro

I also enjoyed the impromptu voice acting a lot, especially the stereotypical villain part at the end. Very 007-y. Also, regrettably, very Despicable Me-y.

mxqt

This stuff is cool, dawg. Definitely do more if you have the time.

Spencer Edwards

I like this. it's intresting to hear what you think

Cj Bell

I loved this jello, it was kinda like a podcast and a very good audio source to use when i just want to sit down and play puzzle games. I also for some reason love hearing your opinions on these movies, I think it may be your completely different outlook.

Arcesolcer

I quite liked this, be keen to hear similar stuff to this,

Aiden McCarthy

I absolutely LOVE this type of thing! Please do more, if you want/can!

Jennifer Miller

*listening to Jello talk about Ego's speech* yeah, that is a great speech and really highlights the importance of unbiased critical analysis and why we should respect the critics who take their jobs seriously. *ten minutes later, disses Korra* WHAT DID YOU SAY, YOU SLIMY EGORAPTOR WANNABE!?!?! (just kidding, great overview, had to skip Coco because I haven't seen it, but it was at the tail end thankfully)

Seren Regalado

I'll be honest I was kinda planning on listening to this casually while working on an art project but I liked listening to this so much that I actually stopped working and just sat down to listen. It's nice hearing you talk so casually about something that you really care about. I'd honestly love to hear more of these in the future :)

Vikta Welibwe

Well...I really enjoyed this and I'd like to nitpick about some of the things I think you got wrong but your views are pretty sound overall so fuck it. I do disagree with your opinion on Coco's family a lot but I think that might just be a difference in culture or exposure to certain types of family values. I posted a comment on the YouTube video in reply to your issue with the ocean center in finding Dory before I knew I could comment here so I hope you see that. I just wanted to say that I really really really enjoy your content. I found you about a month ago because of your stib my high school academia, which I don't watch but found the video extremely entertaining. I went to your channel and devoured all of your videos right away. Love your perspective, voice, character voices and comedy. I can't tell you how many times I watched welcome to steam. I don't even have stream or know anything about it but Joe is amazing and that video is fucking gold. Anyway, dude, you should make more of these. I'm up at almost 3am just because I wanted to listen to this whole thing and as soon as I get myself one of them job things, I'll subscribe to hear more.

Evren

I really like hearing what people think about animations that actually have insightful reasons and discussion about it, other than the usual "I liked this movie," or "this movie sucked," and add nothing more to it. Since I don't really have friends who are that into animated things, it's really nice hearing some discussion from someone who's also a fan. I would like a few more of these in the future :)

Danniel Mendoza

What patron tier will the future ones be locked behind?

Jasmine Krause

I really like hearing your further opinions on these movies! They prove super interesting and I would personally like to see it for your other "ten words or less" reviews and maybe the "So This is Basically" videos! I agree with Brave and how it's basically Freaky Friday with Bears. Such a disappointing movie. And your criticism with Ratatouille is pretty spot on. I remember never really caring for the movie as a child, and feel like it was because it was so disjointed in it's message, but the ending monologue is sort of the one highlight from the entire movie.

JelloApocalypse

I'm not sure! I guess technically it should be the $5/mo tier but that does seem a little steep...

Kevin Bair

This was really good, Jello! If you want a western Pixar animation, though, you should check out the short they made called "Borrowed Time", you might like it.

Zirchona

I really enjoy listening to more of your complete thoughts on why you liked or didn't like particular movies. I'd love to see another one of these for the Disney movies!

Liz Slade

You should watch Doug's video on channel awesome about why disney villains aren't good anymore! If you haven't already seen it, cuz he talks about how every villain now is a big surprise twist and it makes them less memorable/cool characters!

Liz Slade

Loved listening to this podcast review! Found it from your youtube video and I made an account just to leave this comment haha so hopefully you'll do more

Spin Elemayo

I honestly thought everyone agreed that Toy Story 3 was the best of the trilogy! I don't think Inside Out is really as bad as you do, and I think it might be because I'm more forgiving on it for its minor plot holes that I only noticed long after I watched and enjoyed the movie. I know this is probably just how you talk, but you have a strange tone when you're talking about it as if you think people who think the movie is amazing are wrong. It's something that bothers me a bit with some critics who review movies that they have unpopular opinions on when they say things like "How can people say this is good?!"

Jake Hernandez

I loved this, please continue with these.

Molly

I loved this.

Artista

it was a fun listen, please do more

Bas Vegt

I listened to all of it! Hadn't seen Coco at fiest, so listened to that point, then by chance watched Coco today and immediately after listened to the rest of your clip.

Bas Vegt

I wod actually be down for a podcast by you (or sgarring you).

EYES UP FARAH!

I loved this! Listened to the whole thing; I hope you make more!

Joey

Kind of in a similar vein to TotT, it's really cool to hear you go in depth into why you view shows/movies/aspects of work the way you do. Twitter analysis is intentionally limited and (good) YouTube requires analysis and jokes to be concise. This venue just feels more organic in terms of unloading on a subject. I'd totally be down to listen to more if you made them.

Fireking10

It was fun to listen. I do want you to do more and that might be what makes me become a patron, though I really don't have the funs right now. Side note I would like to see an official discord server though I'm sure you have a fan one.

Sea Hutch

I loved the long review, it was cool hearing your in-depth thoughts about storytelling.

nero

this was really great to listen to, ive seen most (if not all) of these movies and share a lot of the same thoughts!

ErbBetaPatched

I like these. I think one reason you see that pattern with Buzz is because Buzz is the only main toy thats new and battery powered. Hes kinda hardwired to be the way he is, as are his bretheren.

PhantomMat

After listening to all three of these longer reviews, I really like the pacing you have. While it's a decently long listen, it doesn't feel like it at all and (for me, at least) you give each section what feels like the proper amount of time. I hope there's more of these to come.

Alexis Baker

It's worth noting (as I wanted to do on the YouTube video but figured I'd do it here after hearing your more in-depth analysis) that the reason Monsters University, Finding Dory, and Cars 2 & 3 exist is because of a deal Pixar had with Disney that for every new film Pixar made they had to release a sequel to another. So yeah, they were shitty bc Pixar was contractually obligated to do them rather than them being the beautiful end product of years of works ala Incredibles and Wall-E (which is not only my favorite Pixar film but one of my favorite films in general and has one of my favorite OSTs of all time).

Alexis Baker

Also, a comment on Pixar OSTs. There isn't a single bad OST to a Pixar movie. But Wall-E, Incredibles, Ratatouille, and Up are my faves, in that order, and Toy Story's is a lot of fun too

CroakPad

The Toy Story movies all had Wild West elements kinda like Cars and The Good Dinosaur. I too think a Pixar Western would be great.

BedknobsandBethanies

The Cars are essentially evolved bugs, according to Game Theory.

Kruh-Daze

In Coco, I feel like there should've been something more with Miguel's family dealing with how they'd treated him (his grandmother especially, bc yeah, the bit with the guitar pissed me off too). I think The Little Mermaid handled that fairly well with King Triton, where he shows instant regret after destroying Ariel's collection and there's the whole "What have I done?" scene in the middle with him, too. Something like that with the family would've gone a long way in making them seem less unreasonable.

Kruh-Daze

Brave has grown on me over time, but I still understand why people dislike it. I do wish they had tried to give us what the marketing promised and have a story heavy with mysticism and a badass protagonist.

Miranda Tagliamonte

These reviews are interesting. I do want to mention some things for Inside Out, though. I don’t think calling it a movie only kids will enjoy does it justice, as evidenced by all the non-kids who loved it. I’m 19, and I rewatched it recently, and it’s quite good. The second movie definitely improved upon it, but the first had a lot of good moments, both funny and touching. And it’s not a plot hole for there to be no elevator back to HQ, bc there’s no elevator OUT of HQ. It wasn’t planned for. And one more thing: Joy was absolutely an asshole, but it’s interesting to see the personification of happiness be such a jerk, and I think it fits great with the movie’s message that trying to be happy all the time is bad, and sadness is important. It’s also a great metaphor for how that sort of toxic positivity can be hurtful to people who can’t help being sad, like Sadness.

Miranda Tagliamonte

Also, the cars in Cars running on fossil fuels isn’t a plot hole either, bc fossil fuels are actually prehistoric plants that died pre-decomposers and never decayed. If I remember correctly, there are plants in Cars, so the universe still works fine(-ish) without any biological animals.

Miranda Tagliamonte

I would love to see a sequel to this focusing on the newer Pixar movies, whether it’s on YouTube or Patreon. There’s a lot of potential: How’d you feel about the mixed-reception movies like Turning Red and Toy Story 4? Did you actually like any of the unpopular movies like Lightyear? Do you think Inside Out 2 is better (it has some of the original’s flaws, but I think the themes of self-deprecation are relatable and interesting, and I’m curious whether you agree)?

Beck Carmine

"These are the jokes!" is my favourite joke about jokes.

buglady

noticed there were a couple of seconds left and took a deeeeep breath with ya jello!

Sir Blader

It's been a while since it came out but I just watched this, it's still dang entertaining

Finn Underwood

I agree with most of your views. Especially Ratatouille. So much squandered potential, and it's lovely to hear someone put my feelings into words. Thanks for this.
