EDIT: Video updated and fixed! Thanks for your patience! In 2019, during the development of Epithet Erased, I conceptualized another TTRPG I wanted to run. This one would be unlike my other games. It would be horror-themed, grounded in reality and suburban misery with player character death not only likely, but almost guaranteed.

Sweetwater had five players: Austin, Will, Mo, Savvy, and Christian. Their players were not in any kind of party. They would each play alone, unable to watch each other's sessions until the full thing had been edited together. In fact, players themselves were allowed to be killers.

I spent a literal thousand hours studying and preparing for this game, creating a murder mystery that could be investigated from any angle like a Murder Metroidvania. But alas. In the end, it was not to be. Scheduling conflicts, tech issues, and simply having Way Too Much Stuff To Do got in the way for years. And now, Roll20 updates have even destroyed the visuals of the beautiful maps I spent so much time working on.

I also drew over a hundred unique icons for this campaign from scratch. Because if you're going to have a murder campaign, everyone needs to be equally suspicious, which means they need to be equally unique!

Yesterday, 3 years after our initial planned start date, I finally sat all the players down in a call to tell them exactly what I had planned for Sweetwater. We go through all 60+ maps, talk about all the many characters and the many murders I had planned, and then tell the players all the ways I imagine they could've DESTROYED the campaign I set out for them.

This video is a flyover of 1000 hours of work, so obviously it is very long. I hope you guys enjoy learning about all this and seeing all my hard work, but before you watch, some content warnings! Sweetwater is a very mature production with themes of death, murder (including child murder), drug usage, frightening imagery, on-screen blood, audio descriptions of intense gore, and sexual situations. If you're ok with that, please proceed!

If you watch this video and have questions about this campaign or the characters, please leave them below! I could talk about Sweetwater and all its intricacies for twice as long as I did in this VOD. Also, I'll be uploading all of the icons and artwork here if you're interested in using them for anything. Axolotl patrons are also free to request a copy of this game on Roll20 so you can mess around with the maps. I was never able to run this game, but if you can reuse any of the assets, feel free! (NOTE: I cannot offer the edited visuals of objects I made because they were bought from packs and heavily edited. If Roll20 lets me transfer games to other GMs and it keeps everything in tact, you're free to use those maps though!)

A shame that I missed the video while it was up, but alas, I suppose that's the curse of sleeping in. But seeing as this video is over four hours long, I'm sure it'll be worth the wait! Out of curiosity, what TTRPG system did you intend on using for this campaign?

RadioCommunicationsMaid

Hey it's me the unfortunate soul who is very good at getting websites to show their shit design, I hate bad website design SO MUCH especially when it wipes my progress, welp time to type out all my thoughts again. fuck... Okay so love the intro cutscene it was genuinely super scary, the moment where jay's character is running away and you just go "How did he get in front of you" incredible scare. Jay is also really good at narrating running away in a panic, and the animated icon for the murderer is oh, it's great it's all so good. I really hope you do something with horror again in the future because I'd love to see it. For the player characters, oh hey that's Riley I recognize her, and given how easily murderable she gets to be, great hook for Hannah angst. Savvy explaining how Ash is like "oh he's English, he's a gentleman, he's from Oxford, but then you realize he has zero care for human life or empathy" just had me thinking "oh so like what you'd expect from an Englishman with a higher education lmao. Additionally love the setting of a rustbelt chocolate town. All the maps are great, also wow the murderer planting an entire methlab and upwards of 5 thousand dollars to divert away from the murder is insane, I love that. the five mysteries and wildcard players are super interesting, I love the part where you talk about having real life dungeons where you can just get injured with no way to magically heal, and not to boss baby but given I've been playing fear and hunger recently very good vibes from "if your leg's broken it's broken for the whole game". Also really did think the treasure was going to be in the blue hole in the lake due to the being swallowed below ground and drowned thing. and that's when the video went down for me welp. see you later space cowboy or at least in two days or so. at which point I'll be able to shit out the rest of my live thoughts on how cool everything here is.

Damn, I was just wondering about Sweetwater recently. That really is an unfortunate series of events, but I do seriously appreciate the effort of preservation to ensure all that work put into it doesn't fully go to waste! Looking forward to the re-upload so I can get to see the mystery you had planned~ Also, I doubt I'm the first to say this, but if you are looking into any games in the future, 100% recommend Foundry over Roll20. I'm stuck between both myself because many of my players are getting stuck on the learning curve, and my current long-term campaign on Roll 20 would be a nightmare to transfer, but Foundry is just better in near every regard. Most pertinent to the above post is that unlike roll20, you can roll-back updates on Foundry if one of them breaks something in game. Foundry is certainly a bit more of an upfront investment, definitely more than is likely worth it for the occasional GM'd game, but the lack of subscription model really makes it worthwhile for even semi-regular GMs.

blackmagicfine

I missed the video but I'm going to go out on a limb and say that The True Killer was Leap. Look at those eyes. He has seen Things. When you first announced Sweetwater in the before times, I was honestly baffled about how you'd enforce the rule that players played alone. Like, do all five of the players exist in separate Discord calls that you constantly bounce around in? Or is each session played with one player at a time, and the other 4 either magically disappear or perhaps are played by doppelganger NPCs of some sort.

JelloApocalypse

The fact the game was hosted on Roll20 and the maps couldn't be moved was honestly a big factor in me deciding to cancel it.

SonicPsycho

Awesome, now be safe during this hurriquake

Alec

100% understandable

Clever Chaves

Damn, Jello is so talented and such a great storyteller. It's a crime this never got finished. I would literally pay to play one of Jello's games, and have him DM.

Calcyon

Its too bad the campaign never came to fruition. Ive watched the opening so many times since you originally uploaded it. The main theme's clear influence of The Poet and The Muse really grappled me and the premise was so cool. I really appreciate that you shared this.

Bricks and Broadway

Don’t get me wrong, we respect your decision to cancel this project considering the stuff you have lined up, but me and especially my brother, are deeply saddened and mildly annoyed that we couldn’t see it in all of its glory, REST IN PIECE SWEETWATER may you rest at the bottom (at the bottom, at the bottom) of the lake. PS: please have Plasterbrain release the main theme on Apple Music, I need this in my playlist

Lstrike

After watching this, I could tell you this would have 100% been a hyperfixation for me. I love this so much and wish it could have reached it's full potential... Now, time to steal a bunch of this and run something similar for my friends!

Folkloric

How would, realistically, the mercenaries be taken down? I know the ultimate answer is "up to the player's discretion," but assuming Rowan or someone finds out about them and decides to remove them, how'd they go about it? This is partly a rhetorical question, because there's a way I think I'd love to go about it: Assuming my hypothetical pc survived to find the lab and know what's going on, and assuming they'd have good relations in town, they'd recruit an army to raid the laboratory composed of the Neverlands, Eli and her dogs, and Donny Tucker. The visual of a bunch of crazy people and gangsters going against a highly trained mercenary group is both bonkers, amazing, and hilarious.

Harlequin Actor

Wow I really like Jello’s art for this

JelloApocalypse

Considering the full scope of their plan involves draining the lake for profit I think you could pretty reasonably expose any significant part of it to the Mayor or the Police Chief which would scatter the Eights and leave Eunice high and dry. Their mission is to facilitate a business. They can't reasonably go to war with a whole town and get away with that. On the other hand, yes, you can also just pick up a gun and shoot them in the face. And if you set Eli on the mercenaries she will almost certainly take out at least two of them.

Erzaad

Did something happen with Roll20 that is causing people to migrate away from it for things like this?

Act One

This breakdown was great to watch, and I'm honestly stunned it was able to come together so soon after the Epithet artbook!

PurpleIsDebeste

pretty curious about shots wittaker. what happened to make him no longer a party member? also if you have anything else to say about uno and lanterloo i would LOVE to hear about it

Call me Caesar

This was such an insane trip and I loved it!! I have like, several questions, so just right quick: 1, what were the top 5 endings you had made for the campaign? good, bad, it doesn't matter, just your favorites 2. which of the 5 hooks was the most fun to write, and which one was the worst? and 3, could Hayley and Riley have actually hooked up if things went well and they didn't fucking die?

Call me Caesar

slightly unrelated headcanon, the idea of Hayley and Riley cruising the states in their weed wagon and looking for a home would be a phenomenal campaign all on its own, even unconnected to this one!

Fan Trades

Out of curiosity, you mentioned that there were going to be ghosts in the campaign. How exactly did that work? Were there plans on there being ghosts other than Macchiato Cafaro? What determines who does and doesn't become a ghost? Also, where do you think the strawman came from? Is he an alien? A government experiment? Is there possibly more than one strawman?

Alec

It's just generally an underwhelming service compared to competitors nowadays. Their entire service model is dependanton consumers buying into their subscription to use basic features in most other competitors, and buying things on their marketplace doesn't support the original artists nearly as much as supporting the artists directly. Don't get me wrong, the service was groundbreaking back at its inception, as online vtts were near unheard of way back in the day. But as of current, their predatory sales tactics, poor performance optimization, lackluster features with extremely slow rollout of things the community has been requesting for nearly a decade, and of course, no way to rollback to prior versions of their software when things break, make them near the bottom of modern VTTs. Maptool is consistently improving making them the biggest free competitor, Fantasy Grounds in recent years has grown to compete and arguably surpass Roll20 in terms of subscription models, Tabletop Simulator and Talespire work amazingly for 3D map environments with native Heroforge STL support and no subscription models, and as mentioned, Foundry has been making serious waves, and is my current go-to and personal recommendation for DMs that were already paying a Roll20 subscription. The license for the game is a bit pricy, but it's a one time purchase, and includes software that allows you to host the server locally while clients can simply connect through a browser. They're confident enough in their product that they actually have an open demo server to let people play around with and see how things work, and I highly recommend checking it out~

Benedict Ide

i think you kind of skipped over this a bit in a hurry to get to the payoff for Savvy and Christian- what was up with the ghost train? i saw you kinda revisited it around the 4:03 mark, but not for long and i'm not sure what the deal was. was the train just to... secretly ship lake water to the bottling plant? was that connected to the mystery of the lake drying up? and how'd they hide the train's existence? because like- and sorry because i'm about to be insane about this for minute: the lake thing. slowly drying up because they're bottling it. i don't think that's how lakes work! a lake is an equilibrium point between inflow and outflow (even just precipitation/evaporation if it's endorheic, which, clearly not, it's freshwater and has a blue hole and it's in the middle of west virginia), so if you subtract some constant amount from the inflow, the water level lowers and so loses less to evaporation and outflow until it hits a new equilibrium. you can only keep gradually lowering the water level by scaling up the *rate* at which you're drawing on the water, which it doesn't seem like they were doing because apparently this operation relied on a... secret train through the woods, to get the water from the lake to the plant? is that what the ghost train was about? i might be misunderstanding, but realistically an operation at that scale is not gonna make a dent in a whole lake- they'd need to either have, like, a way more public bottling operation openly on the lakeshore, or a way bigger secret lake scheme involving like, active drilling and pipelaying for more water-stealing tunnels than the secret blue hole one they already had. i'm sorry, i just went temporarily insane about lakes. what was i saying? sweetwater, right. i see a thing i love and most of the words i write about it are nitpicking it to hell, oops. i just wanna say, *wow*. absolutely crazy amount of work put into that, all in Roll20 aka the second or third worst user interface design for an application i've ever seen. that must've been absolute hell preparing all that- major props.

Benedict Ide

oh, also- what were Benji and Parker's numbers? i have to assume 6 and 7 by process of elimination, and I think Parker's got a 7 on his collar there (he took Eunice's spot?)- but i can't find the 6 on Benji.

JelloApocalypse

If I recall correctly, the """ghost train""" was a train exclusively used to move water from the mine pumps to the nearby bottling factory. It was using an old rail line that USED to be connected to the rail yard during WWII to ship supplies directly to the Cafaro factories, but has long since been discontinued and mostly reclaimed by nature. The Eights cleaned up a singular section of that rail and use it in the woods, so some people seeing the lights and hearing the sound of a train on hikes were reporting a ghost train. Also of note, I don't recall if I mentioned this, but the train has camo paint on it so it's like 20% harder to spot than a normal train and looks weird moving through the woods. RE: The lake stuff, I'll admit that I didn't do as much research on the Train/Lake Draining stuff as the rest. Let's just say that pump they're using is a REALLY big pump. Sip sip. Big pump.

JelloApocalypse

I think government experiment twists are boring and dumb. In my eyes the Straw Man is honestly just an animal. A really big, weird animal. Kind of like how Giant Squids weren't hard-confirmed until the last 50 years or so with photographic evidence. If I can invent freshwater cone snails, I'm allowed to invent a weird lightning-eating stick bug man.

Benedict Ide

Oh man, that's subtle. One thing that's a bit sad about having to scrap the project like this is... imagine how insane people would've gotten about the numbers thing, as soon as someone put together that *some people have secret numbers in their character designs oh my god.* I'd have loved to see the audience go absolutely insane poring over each and every character portrait to figure out who's a secret number scalawag. "Look, it's obvious! Hayden is the secret leader of the number cult! His hair is just chock FULL of little number ones! He's *got* to be the killer!" "What, Parker? That doesn't make any sense. Obviously Eunice is number 7, that's just a coincidence. Don't read into every weird-looking angled line." "It's Riley! It's gotta be Riley! Her EYES ARE BIG ZEROS!" "Nostrils? Come on, man, that's a stretch. Obviously 6 is Rhoda, look at her earring!"

Jau

Great video! Totally understand why it ended up cancelled, but god this would have been /phenomenal/ as a show. I wanted to ask because it was slightly glossed over - what was the deal with Will's third character, Shots? Is there anything more to him than being a bartender maybe-ghost?

JelloApocalypse

Not especially. Will helped me build the bar and we did a little bit of riffing about Shots. He's essentially a quiet, dismissive guy who happens to be really good at picking up rumors. I don't think he was super close to a single other character in town. I sort of wanted a location for ghosts to gather if needed, and I wanted it to be a place like a bar instead of something stereotypical like a graveyard. There were a lot of PCs who I mentally catalogued early on as "important" and "unimportant" (Hannah and Rowan were important while Ken was super not), but Shots was the only one I was like "There's no chance of you getting involved with this mystery" and I stopped considering his involvement altogether.

Fanboyistransboy

If this became like a book module I would pay a bajillion dollars to own it. God damn those maps are beautiful. I loved listening to all of this.

verdragon 5

With the amount on research on meth Jello had to do, you might as well call this series Breaking Brendan, which, coincidentally, could also be the title for a documentary on the production of the first season of Epithet Erased

Chandler B

This was a really cool video; I would've loved to see your take on a true crime type murder mystery play out, but I totally understand and cannot blame you for deciding not to when your time is being taken over by other good but time-consuming things. The first 10 minutes also made me jump and, this is probably the weirdest thing that has stayed in my mind about the breakdown, but if the new type of chocolate the company made was real I would for sure try it; something with a cookies n cream, mint and vanilla taste sounds right up my alley.

JelloApocalypse

The trick is that if you make a cop a main character then they need to be likeable and everybody fails this every single time and that's why True Crime sucks, thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

Leaf

(slight spoilers for anyone reading comments) Finally made the time to watch this. Holy crap this is fantastic. You have an insane attention to detail and so many different connected plot threads. My favorite detail is that there is a cryptid and a cult and even ghosts - and none of them are really antagonists. It makes the world feel big! Not to mention the crazy amount of maps. So many maps. Sucks that the project had to get canceled especially with the amount of work you put into it. It would have been great. Thank you for sharing everything! Love your storytelling, and I’m yet again hyped for the rest of the epithet story to eventually get told

psychogaze

It's sad that this project got shelved, yet Killer Frequency saw the light of day. Seriously though, you put a *lot* detail and thought into all of this! And boy do I now understand the plight of gms more than ever. I hope someday you can recycle some of the ideas into other projects. The coroner especially.

Kettle GB

What's the music that plays when the wickerman shows up?

Muse

This was so interesting and cool, I'd love to watch a mystery ttrpg ran with professional actors like this. Loved Eunice as a villian. Is there a reason you picked realism in terms of intense research for drugs and weather patterns etc? Did it help guide the creation of the mystery elements?

Arika

I'd love to be use the roll20 maps for a vampire game Im gonna be running! They are so well done!

BuffoonSavant

how would I get the Sweetwater map, the map looks absolutely stunning

Chrono101034

This is so fucking good this alone pays for the 5$ tier

Bricks and Broadway

Can you release the raw streams of Rowan, Janet and dark humor Percy’s sessions please

JelloApocalypse

They're in chunks so I'd have to edit them together and tbh I really don't want to

Bricks and Broadway

Can plastor release the main theme on Apple Music? I need this in my playlist

Fan Trades

If I recall correctly, Riley is a character from Anime Campaign that was supposed to be recycled into Sweetwater. Is there any chance of any Sweetwater characters being recycled into Epithet Erased or other projects? I could very easily imagine the Cafaros being one of Island Country's Trade Families, lmao.

Cronomancer

Hmm… a small town in the middle of nowhere near a larger more prominent town with a lake and many mysteries abound. Where have I heard that before? I think I’m getting an Echo of inspiration. ;)

Cronomancer

“So this town has cryptids in it.” HMMMMMM

Cronomancer

“So here is the Strawman.” HMMMMMMMMMMMMM
