Date: October 28, 2000Venue: WFMT Folkstage, Chicago ILHost: Rich Warren

Work continues on the CD-to-hard drive transfer of live shows, demos, and interviews. Delighted to share with you a live recording of "The River, Where She Sleeps," complete with full introduction, from our Folkstage performance at Chicago's WFMT radio in 2000.

Tip o' the archival iceberg here... but it's getting done, thanks to YOU.

This recording is top-notch, and I suspect there might be a way to secure the rights to offer it to the public. I will keep you posted! For now, the recording is just for patrons... :)

Setting up a song in live performance is an art unto itself and -- no surprise -- Dave Carter was a master. Dave's intros were never off-the-cuff. They were always as thoughtfully-rendered as his songs and always true -- though not always factual, and like any living, breathing art, subject to slight changes. As I transfer these interviews and performances, I'm studying many aspects of performance but especially how the songs, the performances, the set lists, and the backstories morph across time. So far, this is one of the more complete intros I've found for this song, and a solid performance, too. I hope you enjoy them both!

Oh, this is wonderful! I especially love that you're mixed more into the foreground so your gorgeous harmony lines are front and center.

Scott Price

Delightful. The harmonies, uptempo, perfectly in sync. Thanks so much TG for sharing!

Tracy Grammer

You're so welcome. Thanks for your part in helping me complete this work.

Chris Ricke

Thanks for sharing this! Somehow, I thought it originated from a "rhymes with orange" songwriting exercise. Love to play this at occasional open mic nights for something completely different.

Joe Holtzman

remember hearing that Folkstage Broadcast live at the time - on the radio :)

Tracy Grammer

That challenge was certainly lobbed as well. I may yet find an intro that includes both! Thanks for playing the song!

Joe Holtzman

What can I say- you two were memorable - first time we saw you was the Ray Nordstrand tribute at OTS

Ron Greitzer

Your harmony is a bit high in the mix . . . it’s fun to hear it!

Terry Woodburn

This was always a great kick-off to the set.

Jack Eppington

Wow, great quality of this recording, and excellent performance.

Tracy Grammer

It is. A tad hot, and the instruments a tad light. But as recordings go, it's really strong overall. A happy find!

Annie & Rod Capps

Ah! The infamous "agent orange" rhyme! Smiling big! LOVE THIS =)

Sarah Heim

oh my goodness, this is glorious. Thank you so much for sharing it.

Mark Hardy

Thank you for sharing this Tracy, what a gem, love it. You both sound amazing. Were you singing a bit higher on this one?

Tracy Grammer

Same place I always sang it, but you're right -- it's in a higher range than my solo work.

Eliot Levine and Madge Evers

Thanks, Tracy, we really enjoyed this, the first song we ever heard you and Dave play, at Gary Martin's in Assonet, MA.
