James would probably spoil Laura out of guilt over Mary. Besides, Laura is the only thing that still connects him to Mary — the last living thread, and the only one who knows the truth about Mary’s death. And Laura, having lost her parents and then Mary too, would likely try to numb that grief with toys and distractions. She’d probably tease James a bit too — maybe even as a way of punishing him for what he did. But I also really like the theory that Laura isn’t real, but rather a part of James’s subconscious — vulnerable, honest, childlike, and unafraid to feel.
