The Sunderland family's tragedy is the most heartbreaking and painful one I've ever seen in any film or game

Oooh this is breaking my heart but it’s so nicely done 🥺💔

:'( This is heartbreaking - the second panel where he's just starting to cry and his lips are pursing is probably the biggest punch to the gut, to me. I can just imagine them starting to quiver :'''( I know there was selfishness to what he did, but I can't possibly think there wasn't an attempt at an act of mercy and love in there too (even if the act is depicted pretty differently in the remake than the original and I can't decide whether it makes it looks worse for him, though I know a lot of people have just decided it does). I've been in the position of watching a close loved one in a long, deteriorating illness and things are always complicated. (I mean, I never contemplated murder, lol, but still - I just mean it's hard not to feel for what he's going through while still understanding nothing excuses what he did. It's what makes him a great character.)

I think James is mentally ill. Not like he's crazy, I think he's someone who's been through a tough time and just couldn't take it anymore

Yeah, I think one of the most interesting things about his character is digging into how he made it to the point where he resorted to believing murder was the solution to his problems. I agree that in the end the biggest reason is probably that he finally just snapped - the game shows some of how impulsive he can really be and I feel like that couldn't override that sense of being... so overwhelmed, I guess, and he didn't have the foresight to realize he'd regret it - or that... pretty basic failsafe most of us have that makes sure we... well, don't kill people... I really do think that sometimes the most simple explanations are the most impactful and most effective. (Obviously he had complex emotions about it leading up to it and beyond, which again is one of the reasons I think he's a great character to get to analyze and think about - but that feeling of losing his life to someone else coupled with a lack of impulse control I think is probably one of the saddest in its simplicity... especially for Mary.) alright, it's past midnight, I'm taking my analysis hat off and going to look at that new commission you posted, haha

I think he was suffering alongside Mary, watching her deteriorate, and couldn't take it anymore. He likely felt despair, depression and drowned himself in alcohol because he couldn't protect her. If I remember correctly, near the end of the game you hear Mary's monologue in the hallway where she says "it would be easier if they'd just kill me, but the hospital is making a nice profit off of me"... which leads me to believe that Mary might have made an attempt at her own life and couldn't stand being in pain anymore, but was also conflicted because she wanted to live. So when she was sent home James took it upon himself to release her from her pain, but was completely traumatized by his own actions and developed an amnesia. People tend to point out that he was running away from the truth, which isn't entirely correct since he does fully admit what he's done and even confesses his crime to Laura. I think someone who genuinely believes they did no wrong and are truly abusive would never take full accountability for their actions... James also has a strong desire to be punished for what he did as well... and I just can't see him as a bad man. He was a good man that did a horrible thing that cannot be justified, but he deserves a second chance to do the right thing.
