Thing is, the strongest people have belly fat because it helps protect the abdomen against injuries like hernias. Plus a layer of fat provides padding to slow down weapons. Gladiators were known as "barley men" because it was a large part of their diet, which was designed to build muscle and fat. Gabriel in season 1 was wrong, you don't want your fighters to be too lean.
