There was a hush in the corridors as he walked by.
People froze and darted to the side; they allowed the water coolers to overflow in their paper cups, or ducked behind office doors in an attempt to look busy. Hardened military men averted their eyes, darting them down to their shoes, and the very air around him seemed to chill. Those that spoke did so in whispers - but most regarded him with silent awe. For they stood in the presence of a legend, a hero amongst heroes.
A hero that wasn’t supposed to be here.
He didn’t turn his head at the whisper - “I thought he was still in Nicaragua?” They didn’t need to know why he was here; it was strictly need-to-know, classified at the highest level.
He reached the door at the end of the corridor. The pair of grunts snapped to attention, briskly saluting - he returned the gesture as they opened the door.
The secretary beyond the door looked up from her computer.
“I’m sorry, the General is in a meeting…”
She gulped loudly.
“Cuh-Captain! I’m sorry, I wasn’t aware you were…”
“I need to see General Grey immediately,” the Captain replied. “Priority-One clearance.”
“Of course, sir,” the secretary replied.
She pressed the intercom.
“General? Priority-One visitor.”
“Send him right through.”
