I have always said this is one of the best episodes of Buffy that I don’t want to rewatch- for all the reasons you stated. The lack of music that heightens the emotions, the way the camera angles are used. It’s superb but not one I am going to watch over and over again.

Ooof. This is s really difficult episode anytime you watch, but this moment in history, in particular? Really painful. I just wanted to hug you. Please take care of yourself as you process this, Arvin.

Like all Buffy episodes, I've watched this one a ton of times and not a single time have I been able to get through it without crying.

Well this might very well be the most difficult episode you will have to review. Of any show. I've said before on other places how it was very difficult for me to watch the first time. When this aired I was waiting for the test results as to whether or not I had a brain tumor. I shit you not. I wasn't so much scared of dying but after seeing this I was terrified about what my family and friends would go through. Fortunately it was, to borrow a line from Kindergarten Cop, "not a tomaww" and I'm still here today.

Sigh. In every Buffy reactor's life comes Episode 5x16. *Sniffle*

There is so much I could talk about with this episode and the reaction, but I don't want to leave a novel here. LOL Did you notice that when the doctor was talking to Buffy, his mouth moved with the words, "I don't have to lie to make you feel better," but Buffy heard, "I have to lie to make you feel better." Such a fantastic touch. Everyone's performances in this episode were stellar. Willow and Tara's little bit with Willow trying to figure out what to wear was just so real and powerful. It's the little things that suddenly mess us up in these times as much as the big things. But it's Anya's reaction in that scene that really guts me, because at first, she seems like she's just clueless and insensitive, and then suddenly you get it. She's scared and just wants to know why, and no one can give her answers. It's so powerful that the ex-demon has one of the most human reactions anyone could have. The simple need to know why. Joss Wheden left the music out of this one on purpose. He said in the commentary that music is a comfort, and he didn't want anyone to be comforted. He wanted them to feel the real, raw and "almost boring" emotions we feel while grieving. Trust me, when you cried, all of us cried with you. This episode was perfect. It was terrible and awful and brilliant all at the same time. It was a masterpiece.
