Time Lords can regenerate 12 times (for a total of 13 different lives.) They usually only do it when they are about to die, but in the original series, there was one instance of a female Time Lord (Time Lady?) who chose to regenerate seemingly because she just wanted to change how she looked. But it's generally a very serious decision and they only do it when they have no other choice.
