Jane Foster receives an unexpected visit and an unexpected gift
Jane Foster slammed her San Francisco apartment door shut. She was tired and she was fed up. She was tired of being sequestered in the basement of the university with a budget that could barely afford a rental car let alone the equipment she needed.
She was tired of being confused with a student, which some could have taken as a compliment, but the five-foot three woman didn’t feel that way. Security guards stopped her often, even the own chair of her department didn’t recognize her from behind and treated her like a child for a moment. The old man had the audacity to blame Jane’s short brown hair as it was too young of a style for a distinguished scientist like Jane. She tried to keep herself in shape, not that she visited the gym too often, and keep up with fashion trends, which for her mostly involved a sweatshirt and jeans, but to be called out as a reason to disrespect her hurt.
Her only friend at the university, Darcy, had moved away for greener pastures even asking Jane to come with her but deep-down Jane kept asking herself one question. What was the point?
Almost every physicist she contacted laughed in her face and the ones that didn’t put down any attempts at helping with her research. If she didn’t get a stipend from S.H.I.E.L.D, she wouldn’t be able to afford this apartment and she only had that thanks to her connection with Thor. Not that she had heard from him in months. She slipped off her sweatshirt, tossing it onto her kitchen counter, leaving her in her vintage science is rad t-shirt and walked towards her small dining room table and stopped.
Her apartment wasn’t empty, there was someone there. Jane didn’t say anything and flipped on the light hoping to catch whoever was sitting at her kitchen table with surprise.
The lights went on and instead of Jane surprising him, he surprised her.
Odin was sitting at Jane’s kitchen table.
“Oh crap.” Jane said more to herself than the living God at her kitchen table.
“Good evening, Ms. Foster.” Odin said getting up and gesturing her to sit. He was smaller than Thor, his son, but still a large man with an eye patch and a bushy white beard. He wasn’t dressed regally, but he wasn't dressed like what people would consider normal. He wore a white tunic that matched his beard along with white breeches.
“Lord Odin.” Foster said, still startled that Odin was in her apartment. She had only met him a handful of times, while Thor and her weren’t official it did feel like talking to her boyfriend’s father.
“Please sit. I have news of mine son that you must hear.” Odin said and his face was grim. Jane collapsed in her chair. The way the All Father spoke made it sound like Thor was dead and she was devastated. She couldn’t even remember the last words she said to him. A few tears began to well up in her eyes.
“Mine son Thor is not dead, if that is what you think. Thor is... missing. Some mystery befell him.” Odin said and Jane wiped her tears. Missing wasn’t the same as a dead, it wasn’t good. Odin stopped speaking and look out the window of her small dining room longingly. He too missed his son.
“Thor had gone to the ends of the nine realms. He was searching for the last of the dark elves. Rumor was Malekith had some form of weapon that would destroy Asgard. Thor disappeared and it was discovered Malekith’s dark elves had never even been there.” Odin looked distraught as he shared the news.
“I’m sorry. Is there anything I can do?” Jane asked, not expecting Odin to ask anything of her. She was smart and some would say resourceful, but Jane Foster was no god. The gods of Asgard were more than capable of rescuing Thor.
“There is something, a request from Thor.” Odin said and she almost fell out of her chair. She couldn’t turn down a request from Thor.
“Anything.” She said, holding her breath a little. The fact the Asgardian had been thinking about her meant a lot. She missed him dearly and some parting words or gift would mean a lot.
Odin reached down under the table and brought up Mjolnir. It was a simple weapon from the look of it. A brown leather handle and a rectangular stone hammer head, but on that rectangular stone was carving and runes. Thor had never let her study them as they meant a great deal to him, and their meaning was for him alone.
“Mine warriors found Mjolnir.” Odin said, his voice steady but clearly fighting back some emotions. “I fear the worst for mine son, but I fear for this world without a warrior such as he.”
Jane was a bit confused as to why Odin was bringing Thor’s hammer to her apartment. He waited a moment, they both sat there. Jane looking at the hammer, Odin looking at her. After a moment he slid the hammer towards her. She almost jumped thinking it would scratch the table, but it glided effortlessly across the surface.
She then almost jumped realizing what Odin was doing.
“I... I can’t.” Jane said. This was a big responsibility. A huge one and she couldn’t bring herself to take Thor’s hammer away from his father, who clearly missed him. Odin cleared his throat.
“Mine son said to entrust this to you, if he hath fallen.” Odin said. “I do not ask lightly Jane Foster.”
She gulped. Thor wanted her to have this if anything was to happen to him. She couldn’t really turn down his last wish, could she?
“By accepting this, I grant you the powers of Thor Odinson.” Odin explained and Jane had to stop again.
“What? I’d be getting super powers?”
Odin looked at her puzzled. “I know not what you say, but would you would be given the powers of mine son Thor. Strike the Mjolnir to the ground like it is now and you shall transform.”
Jane took a moment to breath before nodding.
“Yes, I accept.”
For the first time Odin smiled.
“I thank you Jane Foster. I believe this world needs a God of Thunder. You are also doing me a great service as I know not who may have betrayed Thor to his fate. Mjolnir is not safe in Asgard anymore.”
Odin waved his hand over the hammer.
The hammer became a cane, like the one Thor had when it wasn’t in hammer form. Jane frowned and Odin looked at her puzzled.
“What is wrong?” He asked not understanding.
“I don’t need a cane.” She said, which was true. Everyone who knew her, would be asking why she was now walking with a cane, especially considering she didn’t need one.
“I can change its form again. An umbrella perhaps? Or a broom?”
She also frowned on those ideas. She couldn’t imagine leaving a magical weapon in her apartment or carrying around a broom all the time. An idea quickly popped into her head. She quickly got up and grabbed her phone, searching up an image to show to Odin.
“Can you make it like this?” She asked showing him the picture. The old god was confused for a moment before understanding.
“I can do that yes.”
Odin move his hand over the hammer disguised as a cane and its form changes to a retractable baton. Jane had been meaning to get one and this was an easy item to carry around with her, unlike a cane. She could put it in a bag or even a pocket.
“I thank you Jane Foster for the good you have done me and for the memory of mine son. I bid you farewell and good luck.” Odin said as he walked towards her front door.
“Thank you for trusting me with this great... honor. And...” Jane let the sentence drift as Odin waited by her front door.
“He’ll be back. I know he will be.” Jane said. She knew nothing would ever Keep Thor down and he would return. Odin looked back at her with his one eye gleaming.
“I pray you are right.”
And with that Odin was gone and Jane Foster now had a new duty.
A duty should would deal with in the morning as it had been late. She went to bed leaving the Mjolnir in baton form on the table.
Across the city, a prisoner transport flipped. No one had realized it but sand had gotten into the engine. The guards are unconscious as a stream of sand falls out the back. To any outside observer it appears like the wind has taken the sand. It spins into the air like a mini tornado, no one is around to watch as it spins faster and faster, more sand joining it until it is almost a solid wall of sand.
“Finally free.” The whirlwind of sand said as it stopped and in its place was the form of a buxom woman. She would clearly have been a beauty if she wasn’t made of sand. Her whole form was sand. She looked around and saw no one was around, but she knew the authorities would be coming soon. Just like before the sand flew off in the wind towards the heart of the city.
The next morning, Jane Foster had rolled out of bed and decided it was time to see what Mjolnir could do.
She picked it up and twirled it a few times in her pajamas. The brunette felt like even without turning it into Mjolnir it would be a good baton. It even had a lightning bolt symbol on the side.
“Well, no time like the present.” She said to herself as she did what she had seen Thor do so many times. She knelt down and forcefully hit the bottom of the baton to her kitchen floor. The room flashed as it seemed like a lightning bolt just appeared.
Jane stood up and felt powerful. She looked at her reflection and saw the small woman who she had been disappeared and instead was a woman like no other. She was taller now, at least a foot going from five three to six three.
Her brown hair had grown and gone blonde. While she had always been in decent shape, she was ripped now. Her arms were bigger than any of her previous boyfriends, outside of Thor’s, and she was sure she had a sixpack.
Her outfit had changed as well. The pajamas she had been wearing were replaced by a silver breastplate with nothing covering her shoulders that stopped just above her navel. Under that was a black sleeveless shirt. Attached to the silver breastplate was a red cape that billowed out behind her, not that she was a fan of capes. Her legs were just covered by a black pair of leggings that she could feel were made out of a stronger material than normal.
Across her face she wore a silver half helmet. It masked most of her face, but also reminded her of Thor as it had wings on the sides. The full effect was powerful as she felt very badass. She put the hammer down and expected to transform back into her old self, but that didn’t happen. She ran to her bedroom to look in the mirror and take herself in.
“Damn.” She said removing the helmet, which showed her face. It was still her face, just now blonde instead of brunette. She had no idea why it would change her hair color, but she guessed she had a secret identity now.
She walked back into the kitchen and decided to make sure.
She knelt and put the hammer down like Thor had done hundreds of times before and she was back to Jane in her pajamas, holding a self-defense stick.
She spent the day testing and training.
It came easy to her. Besides watching Thor do it, the hammer gave her the instinctual knowledge to do most of what she wanted or needed with little to know try. She was trying her hand at flying, which she got the hang of pretty quickly, when she saw her first crime.
A pair, a man and a woman, all dressed in black head to toe with balaclavas on were robbing an ATM. She landed just behind them, with a decent thud hitting the ground. From what little she could see one was a skinny white man and the other was a shorter black woman. Jane could only tell because the space between their long sleeve black shirts and their gloves, which showed a little skin. Neither noticed her.
She hung the hammer from her belt and sighed. She cleared her throat, which got no reaction. She tried again a bit louder and both stopped turning towards her.
“Put the money down.” Jane said, making her voice sound deeper than it actually was. She may have grown almost a foot with the power of the hammer, but her voice was still the same. Both robbers started laughing before turning back to their score.
“Excuse me, I said stop.” Jane said like she was a teacher in a classroom and not a super powered woman here to stop a crime. The pair stopped again, but this time there was no laughter just annoyance.
“Look at this geek.” The male criminal said. He walked up to Jane, looked back to his partner and threw a sucker punch right at Jane’s stomach. She had no time to react, not that it mattered. The guy’s hand smacked into her abs and she felt barely anything. He on the other hand grabbed his hand and howled in pain.
“She’s wearing armor or something.” He shouted clutching his hand.
She was shocked, she had expected to be doubled over and in pain, but instead the criminal was. She liked feeling powerful.
“So, I guess we are doing things the hard way.” Jane said as she cracked her knuckles.
“Stop messing around with this nerd and let’s finish this.” The female criminal said and Jane was offended. In her normal form yes, she was a total nerd. Now with the powers of Thor she was anything but. She knew that she’d have to start showing these criminals who the real nerds were.
It only took Jane five minutes to accomplish her warning to criminals across the city. She smiled as she was finishing up.
“You can’t do this.” The female thief shouted as Jane removed her balaclava. The dark-skinned woman’s braids fell from the mask as Jane removed it. That hadn’t been all Jane had removed though as she needed something to tie the criminals up with.
“Can and did.” Jane said as she ripped off the male thief’s balaclava. He only had a short buzz cut so no hair reveal for him. The new Thor took a step back and admired her work. She hadn’t even delivered a punch to either, mostly because she thought it might kill them.
Instead, she used her new found powers to tire them out and then tie them to the lamp post they were now tied too. Jane just didn’t have any rope or tape, so she used the next best thing.
Their clothes.
The male criminal was a bit out of it after he attempted a headbutt to Jane. His feet were bound with his pants and his hands with his shirt, hugging the pole. He was skinny and pale left in just a pair of blue boxer-briefs. The female criminal was a bit mouthier as she had cursed and made threats the entire time. She was also bound hugging the pole, but had a bit more revealing black thong and matching black sports bra.
“Let this be a lesson to you. Don’t steal.” Jane said as she took off leaving the pair to be arrested and mocked.
Jane liked being powerful. It felt good and she did a good deed. She began to wonder if this is how Thor felt all the time. He sometimes seemed aloof, but he always wanted to do what was right. Jane was going to ponder more about it, but screams drew her attention.
She landed on a rooftop.
“Thank god, Thor’s here.” Someone shouted from the street below as Jane looked down. The entire street was a sandstorm. Just one entire block caught in a vortex of sand and other debris. More screams came and she knew she had to act. That’s what heroes do.
She just dealt with some criminals, how hard could a freak sandstorm be, she thought to herself landing in the midst. She began twirling Mjolnir forcing the sand back. She pushed harder, harder than she had since gaining these powers and slowly the storm stopped.
The street was covered with sand and slowly the screams died down and there was applause as she stood there looking around.
“That’s not Thor.” Someone shouted, but not in a negative way just a confused one.
“Of course it is look at the hammer.” Another person responded.
“Three cheers for Lady Thor.” A third said and the people on the street began to cheer for her. Jane blushed; she had never had this many people cheering her on.
The cheers were suddenly drowned out by laughter. Jane twisted around looking for the source, the crowd began to rush off the street as clearly something bad was going to happen. Without warning all the sand rushed back into the air, but instead of making a new storm it reformed into one pile that began to take shape.
A woman’s shape.
Jane watched as the sand turned into a perfect sculpture of a woman and began to move.
“What are you?” Jane asked. She had heard of a man made of sand in New York, but this felt very different.
“You can call me Quicksand.” The woman of sand said. Faster than Jane expected the woman raised her hand at her and fired a high concentrated blast of sand at the woman turned Asgardian warrior. The sand would have seriously injured a normal person, but Jane with the powers of Thor was far from normal.
She was blasted back into a car, knocking some of the wind out of her and the hammer from her hand. The car crumpled like it was cardboard from the impact. Quicksand kept up the pressure, walking towards the downed Lady Thor and continuing the sandy assault. Paint peeled from the car at the high-powered sand blasting.
Jane tried to stand but it was almost like a high-powered hose as the endless stream seemed to never stop. She put her hand in front of her face to block the sand. The helmet did a great job of keeping it from her eyes but it was so intense it rattled off the helmet like machine gun fire.
She felt trapped and didn’t know what to do.
Until she remembered she had Mjolnir in her other hand. She hadn’t tried much with the throw and return, but now was the best time to try. Jane flung the hammer as best she could, trying to aim but finding it near impossible with all the sand.
The hammer adjusted like it had a mind of its own. Mjolnir hit Quicksand center mass and the sand that made up her body exploded like she was just a sand sculpture. The sand blast buffeting Jane stopped and the street was silent once more.
Her adversary was gone with just small pieces of sand blowing in the wind. A thin layer of sand sat where Quicksand had been. Jane took a few hesitant steps forward, wondering if she had killed the woman or merely knocked her out. She didn’t want to be a killer and the idea of accidently killing someone, even a villain made her stomach turn.
She didn’t have long to worry as Quicksand made her next move.
Without warning all of the sand reformed around her. She was fine one moment and the next, she had been engulfed in a ball of pure sand. She struggled to free herself as she couldn’t breathe. It was like being buried alive. It was getting hard to breath as the sand covered her completely. She struggled to move, which was like moving underwater.
Jane didn’t know what to do. She would die here she thought. Moments passed by in her mind. Hanging with friends, getting her degree, being with Thor. A memory shot back to her mind. They had been out one night and gotten caught in the rain, when they had gotten back to her apartment, they were both soaked. She went to change, but Thor had a different tactic. He spun himself so fast that the water flew off him leaving him slightly damp, but dryer. It had ruined the hallway of Jane’s apartment but if it worked for water, it might work for sand.
She began to spin. It was difficult in the sand, but not impossible. With the powers of Thor she managed to pick up speed. After what felt like an eternity, she was spinning so fast that the sand had no choice but to fly off of her. She closed her eyes and concentrated forcing herself to go faster. At a ridiculously high speed, Jane was a blur as the sand flew off of her.
She was left standing alone on the street, a bit dizzy but not being buried alive anymore. She bent over and coughed out some sand.
“Didn’t see that one coming, did you?” Jane asked, not that she was sure Quicksand could hear her.
“You won’t see this one coming.” Quicksand replied from, well basically everywhere the sand was. Lady Thor didn’t have much time to ponder what she meant as she felt it. While the clothing she was given when she transformed into Thor was more resilient than her normal wardrobe, it was pretty easy for sand to get everywhere.
She could feel it moving under her clothes. Under the mask, under the breast plate, under her leggings. It began to move all going downwards towards her lower half.
It wasn’t the coolest thing a superhero had ever done, but she didn’t care. Jane screamed. Her hands went to her lower body.
Jane grabbed at her crotch and butt.
As an ex-boyfriend said, sand got everywhere, and it was terrible. It became even more terrible when she felt the sand in her clothes forming into little sandy hands that began pinching her body. Some weren’t bad but others were in the worst places imaginable.
“Hahahahahaha.” Quicksand’s voice came from everywhere the sand was, which was all over the street. Jane grit her teeth at the painful pinching and tweezing.
She began to feel the sand creep into places she desperately didn’t want them to go and just acted. If spinning worked once, it would work again. Jane began to spin like she had, but this time even faster. Energy crackled as the woman to be known as Lady Thor spun and moved to force the sand out of her clothes and back into the street.
She spun until she couldn’t spin no more and felt the last of the sand slid out from her clothes. Jane stopped feeling a sense of relief, until a new unpleasant sense came.
Jane tried not to fall over from all the spinning. Yes, she had removed every grain of sand from her clothes, but it also made her extremely dizzy. She tried to stand up straight but it was impossible, if she was a little off balance before, this was straight up vertigo.
“Having trouble?” Quicksand appeared before her. Even with a face made of sand, she could tell the woman was mocking her. Jane didn’t speak a response, but she brought her hammer up and swung. She hit Quicksand, who broke apart like a sand castle.
Jane had overestimated how hard she was trying to hit Quicksand as the force caused her to get knocked off balance and to drop Mjolnir. The hammer skidded down the street and Jane caught herself by landing on all fours. She crawled for the hammer, unable to will it back to herself due to her dizziness affect her aim. She began to crawl towards the hammer, through the sand.
A hand of sand formed behind her as she crawled on all fours, fumbling for the hammer. She grabbed her new weapon just in time to feel the sandy hand grab the back of her leggings. The hand began trying to pull her into the sand pit by the back of her pants, but Lady Thor was not going to be surrounded by sand again. He dizziness subsided enough that she was going to try and get away.
Jane began to try and fly away but all it did was allow the hand to pull down the back of her pants. It wasn’t a full pantsing, but it was enough for the nearby crowd to see a good look at Jane’s rear end.
“Woah, is she wearing granny panties?” An onlooker shouted to others and Jane blushed.
Glad to know my undies don’t change like the rest of my outfit, she thought to herself as it was obvious that the fullback blue Hanes panties were still on under her leggings as some onlookers laughed at her.
“Nice undies, loser.” Quicksand said as Jane landed on her feet. If she had just flown away, there was a good chance she’d have lost her pants entirely. The lady made of sand also decided to adjust her attacks since nothing she did stopped Lady Thor, so she decided to embarrass her. Another hand formed and went for Jane’s pants.
A larger crowd had gathered to watch the strange sight of this new Thor fighting with her pants. She had one hand trying to keep her leggings up and failing, while the other hand was holding Mjolnir.
With two arms of sand fighting for her pants, Quicksand reformed. She was missing her arms, as they were busy fighting for Jane’s pants and looked almost like a Greek statue with the missing arms.
“You are pathetic.” Quicksand cackled and Jane was feeling she was right. She was losing the battle for her pants as she was only one handed. She tried to use Mjolnir to swipe at the hands yanking at her pants, but they were quick and she was too focused on defense to make any good hits. She could see the crowd laughing, some with cellphones out recording or taking pictures. She knew they were enjoying this, but if Quicksand beat her, they wouldn’t be laughing.
She felt a new sensation tingled as she realized she had forgotten something important about Thor, arguably one of the most important things. Being Thor meant being the God of Thunder.
Quicksand stood there mocking her as her detached arms yanked at Jane’s pants. The new God of Thunder could feel her power growing as Mjolnir told her what to do. She gave up on her pants and used both hands to grab the massive hammer. She could hear Quicksand laughing as her hands finally fully pantsed Jane, who was left standing with the leggings around her ankles and her blue briefs were on display to everyone. She didn’t care though as she felt the lightning crackle around her. She wasn’t just Jane Foster anymore; she was Thor God of Thunder.
Jane used the powers of the hammer to summon the lightning. Her first day of super heroing didn’t start well, but it was going to end well.
With a deafening boom lightning shot from the sky into the hammer, blinding anyone who was looking at her. Mjolnir did its job and redirected that lighting straight at the armless figure, who was just beginning to realize she might be in trouble.
It was too late.
The lightning struck the sand woman, blasting her. The super-heated lightning struck Quicksand, unlike before where she broke apart, the super heat fused a lot of the sand together turning it to glass. The armless figure flew back, unconcious and burning. The arms attacking Jane’s pants just turned to normal sand piles, losing their shape as their owner passed out.
Jane felt like the baddest woman on the planet, till she remembered her pants were down. She quickly fumbled pulling them up. She would later find out that a lot of photos and videos had been taken, since it was on the local news later that night.
She stayed until S.H.I.E.L.D came to pick up Quicksand. As soon as Jane saw they had the still unconcious woman secured, she flew off without talking to any of the agents. It had been a long day and she needed rest. Jane landed on the roof top of her building, transforming back into ordinary Jane Foster and went down stairs into her apartment.
She just placed Mjolnir, in safety baton form, on her night stand, turned on the television to see herself fighting Quicksand on the news and collapsed into bed. She had just closed her eyes when there was a knock at her door.
“Ugh.” Jane said. She debated on not answering it, but there was another knock.
“I’m coming.” She said, annoyed as she trudged to the front door. She didn’t know who it was but she was not happy that someone was bothering her after such a long day. She swung the door open and stopped in her tracks.
It was Odin, the All-Father, once again. But he wasn’t alone.
Standing next to Odin was Loki, trickster god.
“I am sorry to disturb you, but I need thine help for my son, Loki.” Odin said and Jane could tell it would be a long night.
