Yes to the calendar. If there’s a month that doesn’t have a theme, then just some photos of Chad and Chris! As firefighters, or cowboys. You know, classic calendar fare.

Allison Albright

I'm honored that the lasting legacy I'll leave in the field of library science is the Albright Rule: if you stuff a book down your pants it's yours. This is the kind of work I went into the field to do. Hey I would also exchange money for a theme-month calendar. Warlock is a classic. Everyone I know had a teenage crush on Julian Sands as a direct result of that movie. In retrospect, you'd think it would be a Room with a View, but somehow no. It was Warlock. I guess we were a bunch of uncultured savages.

Jason Thompson

What’s the good Zorro movie you are talking about again? I wanna see it!

Jason Thompson

When you talked about Quatermass and Quatermain I realized I have been accidentally doing the same thing and calling Chad “Chard” for the last 10 years. So embarrassing!

Andrew Brown

As always good episode, one thing that I've realized as I got older is that there are only so many tropes/stories in the universe. So even if people don't think they have the tropes from the 30's, 40's, 50's, they really do it's just under a different label

Ann Knight

Chad's spontaneous unforced giggles have a cathartic effect on me, no matter the topic under discussion. Thanks guys.

Have to say the Chronos movie got me back into remembering my childhood reading torn up cream-orange copies of Vampire Hunter D and later the two films that adapted the first and third of the monolithic 44 book series. Like in the Chronos film, Vampire Hunter D uses tons of different genres throughout its run, from gothic horror romance at first, then into 70-80s science fantasy and even Cthulhu mythos. Even tho Vampire Hunter D can lean hard into the Mc being a Garry Stew, it also gives character to the people that follow him throughout the stories.

Mark Simmons

I appreciate the in-depth "Skeleton Count" followup! I feel I got more out of that weird potboiler than I do from many objectively better works. As for the "born sexy yesterday" schick, since we're counting "Forbidden Planet" as an example, does that mean Shakespeare pioneered this in the "The Tempest"? Oh brave new world, that has such tropes in it!

I have to say that when I heard my name and knew my comment was going to be read out loud I had a sudden shock and was horrified. Ultimately I was pleased for your handling of the comment as it was obviously very personal and a double thanks to Chris for chuckling at my joke "only a reasonable amount" I slid in for brevity. I know that I was probably the only person who read this story and had that reaction based off the comments. So sincerely thanks for lying and saying that many people had the same reaction. I have spent much of my adult life helping others who face or have faced the same issues that I did. What has always come up is how a little bit of compassion and help can go a long way.

+1 vote for "The Thing That Walked on the Wind", I read it in a Chaosium book called, The Ithaqua Cycle, a bunch of stories about all things Ithaqua/Wendigo. Also, even though I keep track of all my dates digitally, I would make an exception for a calendar. As long as April is Imho-Tapril, and not MumMay. May is for phantasms, not mummies.

Eli Wennstrom

I would 1000% buy that themed calendar!

Corey Wittig

Guys, I don’t know where else to post this but Stay Gold Books update: friend of the show Richard (?? We should have exchanged info!) came into the shop and said hi. Also, but not unrelatedly, I am confident we have sold more copies of Carmilla (Carmen Maria Muchado edited edition) than any bookstore in at least 100 years. You bring meaning to my life, you’re my inspiration, Chad and Chris.

Ziggy Bartdust

100% Yes to a Calendar it should have strange stories / podcraft funfacts on it

Ziggy Bartdust

Man, a Ladyhawk reference lol, it's weird, often quote the venture brothers parody of ladyhawk that involves Ladyhawk Johnson and Lyndon B Johnson who are in a Ladyhawk situation except he's a Bee instead of a wolf, I ALWAYS quote that episode whenever a conversation about two things comes up "and never shall the twain meet, except on that there E-clips" I have quoted it so much, when the eclipse came recently, I kept accidentally saying E-clips

Ziggy Bartdust

In relation of Zorro's alter ego being effeminate as part of his personality to throw people off, wasn't the Scarlett Pimpernel also effeminate as well, or is that a false memory from highschool

The Eldritch Dark

Here are some suggestions for a Strange Studies calender; Jan: I’ve got nothing, need help. Feb: Werewolf history month, featuring the Ghost of a Werwolf. March… is for Draculas, obviously. April, May: ? June: Creature from the Black LeJune (was this a thing, or did I dream it?). July: Thew-ly (Conan and RE Howard celebration month). August: August Derleth Reputation Repair Month. Sept: ? October: Bloch-tober. November: Poe-vember. December: ? The calender should also feature important dates in the history of Strange Stories, such as the publication date of Call of Cthulhu and Andrew Lehman’s birthday.

Prince Prawn

Regarding a Strange Studies calendar I will channel my inner Philip J Fry and kindly demand that you shut up and take my money. I also have many rocks and shinies I am willing to barter.

Mooncubus

I would definitely buy a calendar. My gf could finally stop being confused when I tell her March is for Draculas lol I also would buy a calendar that's just random pictures of you two with 0 context. It'd be hilarious!

Andriea

I would also buy a calendar! I never post comments but when you guys mentioned calendars I had to show my support ;)

Jeremy Impson

The thing I can blame August Derleth for is how he completely shut out RH Barlow from fulfilling HPL's request to oversee his literary estate. Somewhere I read that Derleth was quite threatening to the young Barlow. I still wonder if Derleth paid HPL's aunt Anne any residuals (as Barlow had promised to do), or if he stole it all outright. No doubt Derleth and his partner were probably better equipped to become publishers than the young Barlow, but that means they should have helped him do the job, not forcibly take it away from him.

Jeremy Impson

Today I learned I've been pronouncing Quattermass right all these years, but have confused him for with Quatermain the entire episode.

David

Just me expecting Chris to introduce himself as Chris Drac-key then? Bleurgh bleurgh bleurghhhh!

Jenna

I finally have something to contribute! On the born sexy yesterday trope… Meet Joe Black (1998)! Death with a capital D offers Anthony Hopkins character another few days at life if he shows him what it is to be human and live. Which really is just Death with a capital D, giving the D to Hopkins youngest and favorite daughter. And she’s super into his naive, infant like interaction with the world around him. That peanut butter scene? I want to jump out of a window. I most emphatically believe this is the most F-up movie ever! Also, I would love a calendar! May I make a small suggestion? A hidden Dandelo in each picture! Because he’s not there… heheheheheheh

Psuke Bariah

I'm going to say a word in defense of The Fifth Element, ridiculous as that movie is. While whats-her-name certainly is the Born Sexy love interest, and there is, at the end of the movie the "show me what love is and why it matters" trope, she spends the first half? three quarters? of the movie telling him (violently, if necessary) to keep his paws off. She knows what being taken advantage of is, and has no patience with it. And Bruce Willis' character isn't nobody...he's ex-military who spent that same part of the movie helping her to Save the World. I'm not saying it's a *good* movie, just that the Born Sexy Innocent trope isn't an exact match here.

Jerome Tracy

I feel your pain with regard to the pronunciation of Quatermass/Quatermain. As someone pushing 70, it wasn't until only a few years ago that I realized there was no "R" in the first syllable of these names! I'm not sure when the realization hit, maybe it was reading Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, maybe it was reading the DVD cover of one of my Quatermass science fiction movies, but I was struck by that sense of confusion that hits when you are forced to re-conceptualize an old "certainty." Argh! Thanks for bringing it up, I'm sure you've set many listeners straight as well as calmed the jangled nerves of those who already knew how to pronounce these names and were hyperventilating when they heard you.

Baroness Orczy with The Scarlet Pimpernel takes precedence for the foppish member of the owning class who is secretly a hero. While heroes have used disguise many times, this may be the first 'secret identity' where the character affects to have contemptible qualities.

Shadavid

While she isn't quite 'born yesterday', Miranda, in The Tempest, has some of the qualities. Shakespeare appears to playing with the trope with her 'O brave new world That has such people in't!' speech. She's exclaiming this with wonder, the audience knows most of the people she's meeting are villains and scoundrels.

Ellen

I love the calendar idea!!!
