Mandy Reznor (She/It)

The mention of Sorceress confused me, as that retelling of Saint Guinefort doesn't really fit in the sword and sorcery genre. It's more of a historical drama than anything. ...Then I realized they meant some film from 1982 and not Sorceress (1987).

Hahaha, which "getting ripped?" I thought he meant at the gym?

It sounds like your son is one more person who will always know and love DEAN.

I've got to call myself out here, I have indeed gotten ripped while listening to Chris and Chad. Nothing like getting a pump while also expanding my mind!

Game of Thrones and the X-Files both demonstrate that it doesn’t matter how good the first 2/3rds of your show is if you can’t stick the landing.

I read Clan of the Cave Bear as an undergrad in a class on Neandertals. Its very pulpy and over the top and makes some assumptions that are incorrect - the Neandertals communicate through sign language, because when Jean Auel was writing, no one had ever found a hyoid bone in a Neandertal fossil. But someone eventually did, and so we know they had the hardware for speech. Also it falls into some old school racial stereotyping where the "primitive" Neandertals are dark while the "advanced" Cro-Magnon is blonde, but of course Neandertals were almost purely European and DNA analysis shows they were pale and ginger, while Cro-Magnon (or Anatomically Modern Humans) came out of Africa and were obviously Black. But Clan of the Cave Bear still managed to be based on a true story. There's a quite famous archaeological site called Shanidar Cave in Iraq, where a severely physically disabled Neandertal was found buried (plant pollen found in the soil suggested he was even buried with flowers), with obvious evidence that he survived his physical trauma, and had been clearly cared for by others following his injuries for decades. This was a pivotal site for flipping the script on Neandertals and really helped shatter the stereotype of the "cave man" at least among anthropologists, if not popular culture. Anyway, the priest/shaman character from the book/movie is that disabled Neandertal, his injuries described exactly. Auel tried very hard to be accurate to the data as it was known when she was writing (late 70s/early 80s) but of course science marches on, and what was once progressive becomes a little embarrassing as more information is discovered.

Clan of the Cave Bear and its sequels are infamous among GenX women, who as 80s schoolgirls passed them around like VC Andrews novels and were scarred by the version of sex ed author Jean M. Auel afflicted us with, especially in Valley of the Horses. I can't imagine reading it for college etc!

I was tickled to hear the comment that someone was going to attempt to listen to your whole back catalogue. My oldest daughter and I have been listening for years, now, and she was recently accepted into a Master’s program at Queen’s University in Art Restoration (cue the inevitable “watch out for those Vigo the Carpatian paintings” jokes. We’re getting ready to make the 30 hour drive to get her out there, next week. We decided that we’ll start with episode one and try to get through the original Lovecraft series and see how far we get into the Supernatural Horror and Literature episodes. Wish us luck and keep up the great work. You guys have given us hours (if not days) of glorious hijinks! Kaeli will, to this day, randomly turn to me and whisper “snake-babies!” to great comedic effect.

I know it's been talked about a few times over the history of the podcast. However, I have to confirm I do listen to the podcast when jogging and at the gym. So I listen to you all while I'm "getting ripped".

Getting some serious deja vu from this episode. I swear you've had the exact same discussion about wereman aka "manman" back on the old show. I can't remember the exact episode though. Also, did you see Conan got announced for Mortal Kombat 1 last month? It seems word of Thewly is spreading.

ChiveOnOCM

Oh!!! It is the Hulk.

Whoa, deep memory of watching “Clan of the Cave Bear” channel surfing one young and unsupervised summer afternoon. Never new what it was called. I can remember her teaching the chief how to count past 10, and earning her place in the tribe.
