Chris, your pronunciation was almost right, which means not quite :-) I found explaining to native English speakers how to pronounce my name is similar to trying to explain how to pronounce Cthulu, so I asked ChatGPT, and it came up with /ˈʃa χaf/ or SHAH-khaf, or as I usually say, just pronounce the CH as the Scottish 'loch' or more likely in my Yiddish heritage - Chutzpah.

Growing up there were a lot of things I was introduced to too early. But I stand by the fact reading clan of the cave bear in my twenties messed me up more than reading stephen kings night shift at 12

It's a Ghost.

I could definitely relate to your mention of Young Frankenstein being inappropriate for all ages, because I just watched it for the first time a couple years ago as someone in their 40s, and some parts definitely made me uncomfortable. Also, I then laughed when you then mentioned Revenge of the Nerds, because I very much remember my dad (who is the best but also maybe a little oblivious) renting it from the local VHS rental place in the late 80s and then sitting in our living room as a 8 or 9 year old thinking, “I don’t think I should be watching this.”

Apropos of nothing, I recently started listening to the In ReSearch Of podcast. What a fantastic theme song!

Okay so what I'm hearing is that Ezekiel was a necromancer, and, if we follow this argument to its logical conclusion, Jesus was a Lich.

Wow, just browsed through the linked edition of The Twilight Zone magazine and there is an article about RPGs including Call of Cthulhu!! I may have missed it, but did this article inform your upcoming “Dungeon Crawl” explainer ep? The article has some pretty cool silhouettes of HPL monsters! It would be a funny coincidence if there was no connection to your show. :D

Hey, all. Just wanted to mention a recently published novel series re: your future dungeon crawling conversations. It’s called Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt Dinniman. It’s been one of the best selling and most loved series that I’ve sold at my bookshop since opening last year. Highly recommended! They had previously been self published but got picked up by Ace Books (subsidiary of Penguin) who are putting out gorgeous editions. So far 6 have been released! 👀

Does horror need to be scary to be enjoyed? I love the universal monsters, have since I was a kid, and I now have Frankenstein, Werewolf, and Creature tattoos. None of the movies ever scared me. It was, for me, more about the look and tone of the films. A strangeness I felt a connection with and sparked my imagination. If horror needs to be scary, maybe we need to call this something else. Creature Features or Dark Fantasy.

For anyone who doesn't know about it, image comics has a license with universal to make comics based on the classic monster movies. The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a sequel, while the Dracula and Frankenstein books (which I think are better) are stories that take place alongside the events of the movies, focusing on side characters. I'm now waiting for the Mummy to come out in graphic novel, and the next one up is Invisible Man.

Chris, I * absolutely agree* with Albert (or is it Finnean?) that you used to sound like Andrew Leman!! I finally had a good opportunity to listen to the recently reissued Call of Cthulhu episodes, and many times I wasn't sure if you or Andrew were talking, until eventually hearing the other's voice. It's definitely not that your accent has changed. In fact, it may just be an artifact of the relatively lower quality microphones that were used in the podcasting space back then. They didn't seem to capture the lower frequencies as well as what you and Andrew use today. I dare say that even Andrew sounded different on that podcast than he did when recording contemporary Dark Adventure episodes, due to different quality of microphone.

I just watched all the Universal horror movies recently, my favorite was The Invisible Man. I didn't particularly care for Frankenstein, probably because I didn't watch it as a kid and don't have that nostalgic fondness for it like you guys. My favorite Karloff is the Mummy, mostly for that scene where the douchey assistant sees Imhotep wake up and starts scream-laughing. That's one of the best scenes of the horror genre in my opinion. The classics will always have value, and they should never be left behind in history simply because they're "not scary" to modern audiences.

Dan Bollen

As far as genuinely scary episodes of the podcast, your older episodes "The Signal Man" and "The Red Lodge" genuinely give me chills. I mean I guess that is partially the writers' doing, but you guys do a good job of conveying the spooky essence.

I only saw that was in there on a later browse-through of the magazine. Pure coincidence! Great time-travel.

My elementary school library had a few of the Crestwood books. I specifically remember The Blob and the one with the mantis. I checked them out a few times, and always dreamed of adding them to my library at some point... but not at $5k for the set. Guess some dreams just aren't meant to be.
