I'm used to the end of the name "Shukeli" pronounced like "lie"... (Shu-kah-Lie) So hearing Chris pronounce it like "Shu-Kelly" was interesting. I immediately pictured a more laid back surfer dude...

So happy youre covering a King Conan story. One day you'll need to do Hour of The Dragon and get some ghouls, vampires and returned to life mummy action.

Episodes like this are why I subscribe! You guys rock!

Interestingly, or so I claim, the Greeks and Romans frequently collapsed the distinction between witches and sorcerers on the one hand and poisoners or makers of drugs and potions on the other. The Greek/New-Testament word for "witchcraft" is "pharmakeia," the direct ancestor of "pharmacy." Why, I wouldn't be surprised if there were someone on X or Truth Social making a big deal about that right now.

I’m just a few minutes in, and I thought Chris said with admiration that Conan was “still fighting like a cheetah.” I raced to hit the 10 second rewind button to confirm the ridiculous thing I had just heard. Sadly, he had said demon, not cheetah, and now I don’t where to direct my indignation. I’m hoping Chris actually does say something nonsensical in this episode so I can call him out on it, or it’ll be too bad for the people I’m working with tomorrow.

thanks, boys. my day started a bit low but you guys had me cracking up in no time with this one. i don't recall offhand ( pre-coffee) if you've covered any Kull tales, but there are some real gems that i would love to hear your treatment of, particularly the far-too-unsung yarn where Kull, Brule, et al. journey to Zarfhaana, called "untitled draft" in the Del Rey collection. thanks for everthing you do! p.s. more Fafhrd & the Mouser would always be great, too. they get pretty strange! so too C. A. Smith jams!

Chad spoke to how creepy the giant snake was, I couldn't picture it not wearing the James Earl Jones Thulsa Doom wig, so gotta agree, but for different reasons...

Great episode! I would also like to say that I love Anthony’s voice. That being said, I sent Anthony a dollar and I never received my whisper, which I can only assume is due to Dollar Whisper Club being affected by inflation and US tariffs. What else could it be? Is it me?

I'm very excited that Gary Butterfield is coming on the show! Watch Out for Fireballs is a games podcast by two Lovecraft-observant hosts. They've also got a fantastic bite sized podcast called Monster in my Podcast that is a delve into each creature in the monster manual. Highly recommended. ♥️

Jake

It's equal parts affirming and strange that I share interests with other creative giants I enjoy. Lovecraft and then Harlan Ellison, who also was friends with Robin Williams and Patton Oswalt. It's the six degrees of my love for this little podcast. Let's have more Conan, more Patton and Ellison. Any one of these is a good day.

The Shadow Kingdom, of course, but i sure hope you do some more!

wow also how did i ever forget Chad's hilarious jokes about it?! just relistening & very much enjoying the ep.

Jim Cannon

You know, I didn't realize just how much Texas there is in Conan until I read "The Vale of Lost Women," one of the worst things Howard ever wrote. In retrospect, Conan's attitude toward taxes in "The Scarlet Citadel" was a HUGE clue. For a guy who purports to be a Northern barbarian of the Hyborian Age, he sure has a lot of early 20th century Texas attitude.

Jim Cannon

I get this one mixed up with _The Hour of the Dragon_. Conan gets nearly deposed A LOT. I can't remember which one has Zenobia. I keep expecting her to appear, and maybe she will be in the next episode, but I suspect she's in the novel instead.

Jake

That Texan attitude is likely what I'd call the "diminishing frontier" mindset. Larger populations need schools, roads and emergency services paid for by taxes. But then I suppose Howard bought into the robber baron, anti-tax,/anti-government regulation propaganda at the time. It wasn't his only kinda antiquated notion.

Ethan Cordray

Some thrones sit on a platform of human skulls. Conan's throne sits on a platform of deregulation and tax cuts.

Ethan Cordray

Well he had to either start charging more than a dollar, or start whispering even quieter. Guess you'll never know which one!

Steve

"High on a hillside ..." like a lonely goatherd?

SeekerOfTruth

Thanks for the shout out! Great episode as always. Love your banter guys!

Jake

How did my other favorite podcast find this one? It's a conspiracy I tells ya! I love "Watch Out For Fireballs!".

Thunk

Just piecing together hitherto disconnected knowledge 😄

Ryan Thomas

Conan is friend of a king who's a walrus?! Those so cool! Was he long in the tooth? Heh-heh.

Ryan Thomas

"Defeat is the worst flavor of Tang". Yeah, I don't like the taste of toes either. (da feet)
