It's a really great but bittersweet day saying goodbye to new Manimal coverage, but this episode is so funny I couldn't stop laughing. I enjoy listening to your coverage of Manimal more than actually watching the show lol lucky for us we now have a complete series to relisten to whenever we want! And maybe it's the beginning of something beautiful with Night Man coverage can't wait!

Let's not forget, that Marvel's Drax the Destroyer was also a sax player... I wonder how many other Marvel characters can play the sax...?

Ethan Cordray

YES what a phenomenal sendoff for the man, the myth, the Manimal! And I am stoked to get more Night Man coverage! I'd never even heard of Night Man before. This is the kind of educational content you can't find anywhere else.

Bret Kramer

A bomb in the cable car?! That Nightman pilot better have been named “Bang Bang Bang Goes the Trolley” or someone should have been fired.

Bret Kramer

Jack the Ripper had already been to San Francisco when he stole HG Wells’ time machine in Time After Time (1979). Unless that was a future version of the Ripper so that timeline never happened because he was defeated by Manimal, Nightman, and the Marvelous Ms. Manimal… Now my head hurts…

Joe Webb

Panther hates the cage - this was a crazy episode but that one just had me rolling. More Nightman. We need a Nightman/Manimal reboot.

Pete Williams

Do Baywatch Nights season 2, damn it.

Mooncubus

This was the best finale for your Manimal saga I could've ever asked for. It's so beyond ridiculous, I love it! Now I wanna binge the series myself. Really looking forward to you covering more of it!

I have waited with bated breath for six years for you guys to watch this. I recall catching this show for inexplicable reasons when it was airing, and this was one of the two episodes I saw. At the time it was in the so bad it’s good territory. And no, I never had seen Manimal. It was worth the wait. Your coverage brought the whole experience watching this back like the fever dream nightmare Chad described experiencing at the top of the show. Soo good. The other episode I saw involved a grimoire, sometime late in 1998. It was bizarre and you should absolutely cover it. If you are hankering for camp like this involving Jack the Ripper, I’ll put my bid back in for you guys to cover Friday the 13th: The Series. Two words: cursed scalpel. It is still one of the most entertainingly bad in the series, which I know you guys will love. There as also the episode featuring time travel with a cursed gemstone and I think vampires. Totally perfect for March. I’ll be back with titles… Edit: the vampire episode is The Bloody Baron. So worth a watch. And of course the Jack the Ripper episode was “Doctor Jack.” Also worth a view. I think both can be found on YouTube (and definitely on DVD…).

"Panther hates the cage" cracked me up in the middle of my nighttime run to the park! Also, "They met by chance, but quickly sussed out that they were both heroes..." The Chris and Chad meet cute origin story? Thank you guys for an awesome, hilarious episode right when we needed it most. Heroes indeed.

I’m another one who’s been gagging for you to do this! I’m just here to squee about it, I haven’t even listened to it yet . Back later!!!

Rafe Ball

My wife Rachel was listening to this one as I played it, and she thought this episode sounded like some kind of dream Chris and Chad had after eating too much cheese - pretty spot on!

Rafe Ball

What say you to TWO vampires?!? Do I smell "March is for Draculas" bonus content?

Rafe Ball

Well, there is Doctor Sax. Seriously. There is.

Wulf Mungus

Partner to Johnny Guitar apparently lol

Truly an end of an era

Recently I was having an internal dialogue about whose better Joker, Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger (I’m team Nicholson). Then I realized what a silly thing to debate. My point being, as absolutely ridiculous as Nightman/Maninal and any number of other crappy shows are, is it really any worse than the “good” comic adaptations? Is it all a matter of budget and talent? Or is there a line that once crossed- I’ll call it the ludicrous line- no money or acting chops can rescue?

Patrick J McManus

And thank you for this. As a long-time Letterman fan, I remember this episode. Watching on that November night long ago, my first thought was: "?????????"

Grahm Eberhardt

My personal Mandela Effect is that Manimal lasted for WAY more than 8 episodes. It was the talk of whatever the 3rd grade equivalent of the water cooler is. It's been a wild ride revisiting this beloved childhood show with you. I share Chad's bewilderment at seeing Trump in the preview screencap on Tubi while scrolling through episodes trying to find Manimal. I too had to stop and watch that episode first. Here's to many more Nightman episodes! May they all end with the villain being punched into a barn full of empty cardboard boxes.

Stacy Schumacher

This is it. This discussion has convinced me to watch both shows.

Steve

Exactly what I was thinking!

Fred Kiesche

Last of the Red Hot Manimals? Say it ain't so!

It's a Ghost.

I like to think that my handle came to me as a premonition of me one day watching this segment and that it’s been a Manimal reference all along. Letterman: So Manimal really will never come back? Psychic: Nope. Letterman: Not on another network, not in syndication, not on home cassettes? Psychic: Nowhere. Nowhere. Letterman: It’s a ghost. It’s history. Psychic: It’s a ghost.

Aaron La Vene

Alright this is the episode that made me be like… alright I guess I’m watching this stuff

Joe Webb

Awe, that's too bad. Hopefully it gets resurrected. "Panther hates the cage" is going to be my next tattoo, that motto on a scroll under a snarling panther. And by next I mean first.

Phil Jensen

Nightman's "Manimal" (1998) meets the plot of "Time After Time" (1979)... suggesting that H.G. Wells was a shape-shifter? And upon further reflection, Malcolm McDowell, who actually played Wells in the film, was also in "Cat People" (1982)... revelation upon revelation! It really is all in universe!

Ian Scanlon

Incredible. But now I have to watch all of Night Man! I thought I knew what it was but I was thinking that was the show where a cop was a vampire! I just checked and that was forever knight apparently! Who knew

As someone who pays for the upgrade to Patreon Premium, I am able to listen to these episodes in any language I choose. Im happy to report that the Spanish word for manimalism is, as you would expect, manimalismo. The French is an entire phrase that avoids any cognate with the English word “man,” probably owing to the influence of the French language Academy that dictates these things. All the same, I suspect that the word in Parisian street French is something straightforward like manimalsme.

Steve

It strikes me that this has a very similar theme music (https://youtu.be/StMkBPIoggA?t=62) to Haven, the Stephen King inspired series from 2010-2015 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iBgh3bViqE). I wouldn't usually have noticed except that recently watched all of Haven, also Tubi, free in the UK without a subscription. I couldn't watch Nightman on Tubi however, but it is on Dailymotion.

Steve

Disappointingly, Manimal is just called the same in French.

Jim Cannon

Good episode. I am probably the only listener to have owned (at one time) Night Man comics. They were written by Steve Englehart of Avengers and Batman fame. Englehart has a tic or habit of ending every line of dialogue he writes with an exclamation point, giving the effect that Night Man and all his friends are constantly shouting at one another. My hazy recollection is that the suit of power armor was not an instant development, but rather something he patched together over several issues, and after encountering various obstacles. The saxophone, the silly stage name, the lightning bolt and the cable car: those were there from page 1. I have up on that comic book series relatively quickly so I never in my life watched the TV show, which came out long after the comic was canceled. So I missed out on this grandeur - had I known Manimal would one day be involved, I might have actually tried to get into it back in the day.

Jack the Ripper is also involved in the Norwegian time-travel series "Beforeigners." Guy gets around.

Karsa Torvald

Night Man was my favorite of the Malibu line- a regular guy with the powers of insomnia and hearing evil thoughts (not imagined). You should know, one of his enemies was a Russian Werewolf Aristocrat; surely there's a place for him in our werewolf loving hearts?

Michael Cunliffe

I for one am excited for the next episode of NightMania

Eric S. Vallone, M.D.

Hey Chad and Chris! Fantastic episode. Your joy and excitement in discussing the show bled through clear as day and I found myself literally laughing out loud at the coverage. It brought me so much joy. Two things surprised me about the coverage so I am wondering whether or not they ever came up in the discussion, or perhaps if they did, and were cut for time: first of all, the obvious similarities to the Nicholas Meyer film, “Time After Time.” Second of all, discussion as to whether or not this episode was a failed backdoor pilot for a reboot of “Manimal” (or WOMANimal). Speaking of which, I still don’t know the answer to that second point and I refuse to look it up because I want you to tell me. All the best, Eric

Daggorth

Yes. More Nightman please.
