We're discussing your comments on Feline February, from the profound to the preposterous!

Comments

Mandy Reznor (She/It)

...This is the second time y'all used a comment of mine for the name of the comments show. I had "Can You Say Nuckelavee?" and now I got this. I am so proud of myself. 🥺 Also if y'all read this on the next Feedback Loop, Chad, I tricked you into saying "Nuckelavee" again. 😈

The Spider Incident

So sorry for the confusion! I see how my comment came across as something you would hear from a hater, but I promise I'm not. So just to have it on the record: I generally really like the new Trek shows! And even when I don't like it, I'm glad they're still making more Trek. I'm really digging Starfleet Academy right now. My mentality here is adopted from watching *all* of Star Trek. Even in the the TNG/VOY/DS9 (and dare I say ENT) era, which many consider to be the golden years, you really had to hold out for a season or so before things really settled in. (And for that matter, even TOS had some real stinkers!)

Eldritch Golem (JPM)

Since the movie is out now I want to say a few things in defense of Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights since I've seen a lot of people online talking shit about it, many of whom clearly haven't even bothered to actually watch it. Personally I really liked this movie and think that Fennell nailed WH on a thematic level. WH is, as Robert Eggers said when promoting his Nosferatu, "all sex and death" and from the very first scene (honestly the very first bit of foley work) that is exactly what Fennell's adaptation is. Now is it a faithful adaptation of Bronte's text? No. But what adaptation is? Moreover a strictly faithful adaptation would make for a TV miniseries not a movie. But all the core elements that make WH the novel that it is are there. Plus what changes Fennell does make are interesting, which is something I ask of my adaptations. If you're going to change something, make it an interesting change. Unfortunately I can't get into more detail without spoiling certain things and I get the impression that neither Chris or Chad have seen this movie yet and I think they should. I'll also add that I had high expectations for this movie because it was Fennell writing/directing and I felt that based on her previous two films - Promising Young Woman (2020) and Saltburn (2023) - she stood a decent chance of getting WH right. Which again, I think she did. Now when the trailers started coming out I too was put off by the "Greatest Love Story Ever Told" tagline but I also know that directors often have little to do with how their movies are marketed and since WH has traditionally been seen as a love story it makes sense that Warner Bros would go with that angle since, as seen with GDT's Crimson Peak (2015), marketing a gothic romance as a horror movie doesn't really work in terms of box office or audience reaction. Speaking of which I have it on good authority that at many theaters the mostly female audiences who showed up for Fennell's WH left either in tears or physically nauseous because they went in expecting a 'great romance' and that is absolutely not what they got!

This one reminded me of something I've said so many times from the pulpit that I'm sure my congregation would say it's one of my hobby-horses: "We'll say things, hurtful things, to our FAMILY that we wouldn't say to a STRANGER - and that's a liberty we take that's got to stop." Clearly I'm not the only one who recognizes that...

Howdy guys! Not sure if this will be viewed or the feedback of this episode comments will be released in March. Since March is for Dracula, I was wondering what everyone’s opinion is on the new Anne Rice Interview with the vampire show and the new upcoming Lestat show? Not sure if you guys are one day going to have a whole episode discussing the late Anne Rice.

Steve

God damn it, you've got to be kind. I await Rev Chad's sermon next month.

Eric - Speaker in Digressions

I was nervous about Starfleet Academy from the trailers and previews, but, even with my own increasing middle-aged-man apathy about Teen Drama on TV, I'm really enjoying it. Looking forward to the season finale tomorrow with all the "what's the one-line-of-dialogue excuse that Discovery can't save them THIS week?" that you get in any good shared-universe franchise. (The old "Superman's on a mission in space" doesn't work as well when that's where EVERYONE is.)

Ah, man, Forever Knight! (Every now and then I'd like to time-travel back to Younger Me, send myself some telepathic messages of peace and calm, and then say, "Some day, there will be so much geek TV you'll get to skip some! It won't make up for everything else about the 21st century, but it's a start.") We actually got the complete series on DVD recently from a relative downsizing her collection. And then John "Detective Schanke" Kapelos was on the revived Scrubs a couple weeks ago, as if to remind us about the DVDs. We can alternate them for a bit with episodes from the "Kindred: the Embraced" VHS box set I got at a yard sale.

"Interview with the Vampire" seasons 1 and 2 are great! As Eldritch Golem says elsewhere in this thread, if an adaptation makes changes, they should be interesting ones, and that's what we get. And Sam Reid's Lestat is right out of Rice's pages.

Thank you, Chad and Chris, for the shout out. I really appreciate it. Judging by the comments and the comments show, you two are an obvious bright spot in a lot of listeners' week. That said, I do take commissions and contract work! Contact me through my website! Also, I listen to the Colossus audio feature, semi- regularly, and thought about how it'd make a cool graphic novel. 😎

You gotta be careful with trying to use a transporter to get Dandelo back. You could end up with an evil Dandelo.

It's a Ghost.

As someone who grew up in Upstate NY near Buffalo and therefore near Canada, I absolutely loved watching Forever Knight (and Highlander) on Canadian TV.

Aaron La Vene

February aka February for Dandelo. It could be about cats, it could be about matter transportation, beings out of physical plane. Anything remotely related to something to do with Dandelo.

CoolToad

You guys could just smash the Dandelo button for an entire episode and I wouldn’t even care

Scott Kannady

If you like stories about talking cats read The Master and Margarita

Jason Thompson

Seconded! Good book! Not horror (like I thought going in 😅) but good!

Great comment by Mandy Reznor, I somehow missed it before!

Chad made a brief comment about bringing your cart back to the grocery store. My brother brings a cart with him as he's entering the store if it is bad weather, but leaves his cart in the coral when it is nice outside. He figures gathering carts is the best and worst job. I have started doing this too. Also, if there are never any carts in the parking lot of Target, how will anyone figure out how to defeat the Seven Deadly Poes?!?

I wasn't sure if you were hating or not, so I left it a 'general' comment. Glad you are a new Trek fan! Even as a fan myself, it's not all great. But I love that they're still making Trek and they're still pushing things forward. Remember: In the original series, an interracial kiss was NOT AIRED because people were upset about it! If people aren't complaining about Trek's progressiveness or preachiness, then they ain't doing it right! -Chris

The Spider Incident

I'm with you, Speaker--one of the reasons I really like Starfleet Academy is that it's not the teen drama that I had been expecting from the promotions
