Next thewly consider Fire and Ice. Rotoscope genius, or...do yourself a favor and watch Conan tye Barbarian with the John Milius and Arnold audio commentary. It is an incredible experience.

Oh - the Conan commentary track is a MASTERPIECE. "Is that kid wearing lipstick?" Classic. We are big fans. Fire and Ice is also a good one.

"We should make a second one."

I think you should do an extra credit episode on “Obsession.” Not because it is particularly in your wheelhouse (unless you do Fucked Up Horror Romance Month) but I’m curious what you think about it!

The latest masters of the universe is definitely worth a watch if you havent seen it. It's one of those love letter movies, with all the bells, whistles and Idris Elba . My friend who I dragged along with me, (who didn't grow up on he-man like i did) had to shh me from cackling so loud. Cinema gold.

So glad you guys covered this! The unaddressed giants were also my favorite part. It did such a good job telling you so much about the world while literally saying nothing. Really appreciated how you talked about the rampant misogyny in the original genre, too. It makes those movies so hard to recommend even though they’re otherwise a lot of dumb fun. Especially with the current state of the world, I find my own ability to overlook some of the problematic elements fading as I get older.

Another suggestion for next Thewly movie night: The Sword and the Sorcerer. The pacing, setting and plot are remarkably like a Conan story. The triple-bladed sword might be the most cheesy weapon to ever come out of the sword & sorcery movie genre, but there's a lot of great stuff in there, including Richard Lynch chewing up the scenery as the most evil king to ever wear a cheap costume. AND it's got Simon MacCorkindale, Mr. Manimal himself.

MonsterTalk

as for them not making this sort of cheap knock off anymore The Asylum and in particular Eric Roberts seem to have missed that memo. I hate to mix a joke with a serious comment but I am very lazy. Chad, your assessment of the adult content in these movies and the challenges of being a woman in this industry AND your shared commentary about the perils of failing and becoming a joke - all hit hard and really made me think. Great stuff. Which is pretty funny to find in an episode that’s a review of a tribute to a knock off of an adaptation of a pulp that’s actually a western with wands instead of winchesters.

I get the feeling the new Deathstalker comes from people who like Mystery Science Theater 3000. Aside from the show featuring "Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell" and Patton Oswalt as the Son of TV's Frank, Daniel Bernhardt was the lead in "Future War", everyone's favorite exploding dinosaur/kickboxing/cyborg movie.

Jim Cannon

Felt like this generation's Flash Gordon, and not just because of the soundtrack. So much camp. So much fun. Not a good movie, but maybe a great movie, in a way?

Jim Cannon

On the subject of renting these kinds of movies back in the day. I have a clear memory of getting the second Ator movie starring Miles O'Keefe, bringing it home, popping it into the VCR, getting the moment when the heroes fought invisible bad guys, turning off the movie, rewinding it, and bringing it back to the rental store in the same day. It wouldn't be until MST3K did their "Cave Dwellers" episode that I would see the whole thing. In fact, MST and/or Rifftrax is my sole touchpoint for Deathstalker films as well, because those both make frequent use of cheesy barbarian movies.

I agree, not a movie that will win many awards, nor does it have deep meaning. It's pure camp entertainment, and it's valuable entertainment. I would see it at the cinema again in a heart beat.

Stacy Schumacher

Sword and the sorcerer would be a great Thewly extra credit. That sword was fantastic.

Robert D.

Great episode and surprisingly great movie. So many hilarious details, like Deathstalker’s map (“BUGS!”, “BAD DO NOT GO!” and so on). Also, I can’t explain it, but he also looks exactly like Hugh Jackman?

Doc Singles

The new version has the perfect amount of sexual assault (none). It is, however, woefully boob-deficient (and that's a hyphenated adjective I'll bet HPL never used!).

Karl Haikara

In conjunction with the movie coming out there was a Deathstalker comic miniseries which was pretty fun too. I am a fan of sorts of the first 2 Deathstalker movies particularly the second one which is really quite funny. I need to check out this new one im a fan of the director his movies are all very enjoyable

It's a Ghost.

Loved this movie! I was surprised and very much enjoyed how campy and ridiculous it was!

The first shot of the film is of the War vs the Dreadites (who look like the slayers from Krull, just painted red) starting with a partial decapitation resulting in a Kirusawa-esque fountain of blood. All practical effects, and I love it for that. Even when it looks like matte paintings; they were actually miniature model sets composited in. I love how to light his torch, he just sprinkles a mystery powder and then snaps his fingers, so cool. 80s guitar god, Slash being an executive producer contributed something else that is quietly great about this movie: the music is amazing. 10/10 Buy two copies so you can lend one out to friends

This movie lovingly pays homage to many films of the past, but the recreation of the man-boob scene from Fight Club (with the swamp creatures) was just 😘👌 *chef’s kiss It’s a great example of how this movie has all these cheesy “jokes” that you assume are just throw away lines, only for them to come back later as plot points
