I ALSO love Dean! And I've had a Dean-related story I've wanted to convey to you gents, but it always felt like a non-sequiter. But now I have a clear opening. If either of you need a bit of Lovecraftian alternate history Weirdness, I'd highly recommend a YouTube series called The Monument Mythos. It's a wonderfully off-kilter and eerie work of analog horror that's also got a pronounced sense of humor about it. Two videos were considerably funnier than intended for me, though—and I can thank Chad for that. They were titled DEANDEMOCRACY and DEANDISASTER, and were both written and composed as fragments of a documentary about the presidential terms of...James Dean. If you want a sample of the series that leans more into the comedic end, those are good ones to check out.

Chad and Chris, as Manimal aficionados and lovers of all camp, I will buy you both copies of Friday the 13th: The Series, if only so you can again see the awful tour de force that is season 1. Brain Drain is the episode with the cursed trepanator. But there are so many goodies to behold…

Good to hear about the plan to move into more Golden Age sci-fi! Ray Bradbury's short story Asleep in Armageddon might be a good fit for the show, either for this or for a future Bradbury theme month. It's a fun sci-fi horror story.

Possibly my favourite sci-fi horror story is Voyager in Night by CJ Cherryh. It probably isn't a good fit for the show, though: 1. It's not Golden Age (it's from the 80s). 2. Consequently it's not free. 3. For an audio adaptation, it has a challenging set of character names: some are fine, and others are things like <>, <^>, and ====. But I'd recommend it for anyone who listens to this podcast (whatever it's called now), I think folks would enjoy it!

The Spider Incident

Thanks for the recap on Dean! And don't worry about having an inside joke--it helps bring us listeners together and feel connected. Just know you'll have to explain it from time to time when doofuses like me ask ;) I appreciate that you did explain it again and were polite about it (not that I was worried you wouldn't be!)

Nothing to add at this point, maybe I'll give a list of golden age scif, but afraid they're all just too tropy, too cliched, too steel-jawed adonises saving the busty women from grabby aliens. Really just commenting 'cause I just saw on Disney+ that it's the 45th anniversary of Star Wars (I begrudingly write IV New Hope), and my first reaction is that can't be right, I was 14 when it came out and then I remember oh yeah f*ck, I'm 59 years old.

Here’s a few golden age SF short story suggestions - Nightfall by Isaac Asimov, It’s a Good Life by Jerome Bixby, Second Variety by Philip K Dick.

I’m never been a huge SF fan, but perhaps Chad and Chris can change my mind. In any case, there are still plenty of Walter De La Mere stories that haven’t been covered yet… just sayin’.

The Evil Cub

Regarding Derleth, I came across some of his non-Mythos stuff one day at my barber shop (back in The Before Times when I still got barbered). It was his book on the history of the Milwaukee Road railroad. And it was as well written as all his prose, but does contain a staggering amount of historical information.

For what it's worth: Comments, contents, ten pence, nonsense, mom's hints, incense, and pigments (not mints for pigs)

H. Russell Wakefield has your evil beard story. "Old Man's Beard" does exactly what it says on the tin.

Doc Singles

I can't remember if the Pooh Bear jokes were on this podcast or on Rachel Watches Star Trek, but it makes more sense to leave this here: there is a new horror movie comin out soon called Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey, about Pooh's and Piglet's murderous rampage after Christopher Robin abandons them for college.

Paula Wyche

The Nine Billion Names of God by Arthur C. Clarke would be a nice fit by period, but it's not very Sci-Fi. It's more in the "let's take religious ideas and use them to creep ourselves out" genre.

Sean McGivern

The Strugatsky brothers are too late (and in the wrong country) for Golden Age SF, but I'd love to see the show cover one of their novels in future - I think they'd be a great fit.

Jeremy Saz

I'd be interested in what folks would think about John Gardner. "Grendel", "Freddy's Book" and "In the Suicide Mountains" are just a few I'd recommend. "Grendel" - in specific - is the story of Beowulf told from the monster's point of view. This would be a nice companion piece to the Beowulf podcast. (Which rocked!)

When are you guys gonna read Unterderseaboat Doktor by Bradbury? The monsters seen in the Doktor’s periscope really reminds me of those extra-spectrum creatures in From Beyond. Although this story is more manic than a Wes Anderson film.

Karl Haikara

I recently found an amazing book called "In Ghostly Company" by Amyas Northcote who i don't think you've covered, in my opinion these are some really great weird fiction tales i highly recommend you guys cover one of his stories in the future i think you'll really love it. The book is available in a cheap Wordsworth edition i got mine for 5 dollars, some of the stories i liked the most was Brickett Bottom and The Late Mrs Fowke the later one even has a Satanic ritual. Great stuff

Hey you sons of shoggoths, first time commenter here, I found this show about a year ago and have absolutely loved it ever since, you guys have helped get me through some rough times since then and I just wanted to say I appreciate you guys for doing the show. I’ve listened to the whole catalogue twice now and I gotta say Frankenstein is still probably my favorite story y’all have covered but I’m probably biased on that because he’s my favorite monster and I it’s my favorite book. Also, I would love to hear more mad science weird tales, a March Madscienceness?? I don’t have any recommendations at the moment but if I come across any you guys haven’t covered I’ll be sure to suggest them. Keep up the great work you two!
