By popular demand, we're having a look at the 80s space-vampire movie Lifeforce like a couple of weird voyeurs!

To recommend something else (not for an episode) - 'You Are Not My Mother' on Netflix (UK) is a really creepy Irish folklore film which came out last year. It reminds me a lot of some of the stories you covered in the past, with witchcraft / occult themes. It has a child protagonist and plays on several childhood fears - I thought it was very unsettling, and think you would enjoy it!

I’m still in love with her….

As mentioned on IG I LOVE this movie and will defend it to my dying breath. One of the frequent complaints is about the pacing but for me it feels like three episodes of something like Dr Who running continuously for one movie length. Each segment is a self-contained story; the arrival, the chase and the showdown. The cast is a tour de force. Steve Railsback is perfect as the tortured lead. Peter Firth as the no-nonsense SAS man who’s seen things we wouldn’t believe (for years I’ve toyed with the idea of writing some Col. Caine fan fic.). Patrick Stewart is phenomenal as is Aubrey Morris (I love this actor, he should have been a household name). It’s a shame that many scenes aboard the Churchill were cut as Nicholas Ball is another underrated actor. And of course Mathilda May….😍 not just because she’s naked for most of the movie, she’s also very menacing.

And Frank Finlay! How could I forget him…? “Well…here I go…”

Andy O'Dowd

Some of the fx may be shonky but others are marvellous! The apparition of May in the blood is fantastic. The design of the alien ship is sublime and almost makes up for some of the crappier zombies.

Unrelated to the content of the episode, BUT, important question. Any chance of a Patreon watch along for Chad’s movie? I know prime has a watch party function that Crit Role used for their Vox Machina show. I’ve only ever gotten to watch a movie with someone who helped make it once, and it was great. This wouldn’t be in person but could still be a lot of fun. Is this an option? Just a thought if it fits into your guys’ schedules.

Great show! Young me watching this though there was a great spin off series to be made; Colonel Kane, SAS. Where Kane goes around investigating spooky and odd events.

I've never seen this movie, but I tried to read "The Space Vampires" once, after finding it in a thrift shop and being hooked by the title (what a title!). I say "tried to read" because I gave up after the astronaut protagonist (who was, the book made quite clear. happily married) sleeps with the secretary of the main scientist, after which the scientist explains that he's obviously an "anti-vampire" who's sexually irresistible to women but who makes their life force "better" by banging them. It was around that point that I began to suspect that Colin Wilson was much more interested in something else other than vampires -- something, shall we say, very 1970s.

Ben Gilbert

They didn't get Billy Idol but they did have Mick Jagger's brother Chris as First Vampire.

Fred Kiesche

Thirty-odd minutes was too little coverage for this classic. :)

Jim Cannon

Big fan of Cannon films, for some reason.

Jim Cannon

That Masters of the Universe is surprisingly solid. Not a great adaptation of the property, but apparently the director was a big fan of Jack Kirby's Fourth World, and used that as a way to justify the budget restraints of setting the movie on Earth. I know you guys are Marvel guys, and probably not all that familiar with Orion, Darkseid, boom tubes, and the Anti-Life equation, but there are a lot of parallels with the MotU film, even if the director was just saying that stuff after the fact. Uh... I never saw Lifeforce.

Sweatin' to the Great Oldies

I grew up very near Northwestern University. In high school I became aware of B-Fest - 24 hours of B movies without a break. I was not a student and really was not supposed to be there overnight, but the folks that ran the event didn't care. So. I became a regular. I don't know that Lifeforce was screened there. It may have been too new for them to get their hands on a print. But it is exactly the sort of thing that they would screen. Watching this film brought me back to those groggy days of yesteryear when an auditorium was united in their love of dodgy plots, dodgier special effects, inhuman dialogue, and boobs baby boobs. Thanks for the trip, Gents!

This episode features the return of Chris Mackey, Natural Voyeur.

I know Gary Lachmann a bit. He spends a lot of time in England and we've met at various occult lectures. He's been gigging with Bootleg Blondie recently and he wrote my wife's favourite Blondie song "(I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear". It has quite a spooky vibe. I think of myself as an optimistic existentialist but Wilson certainly predates me.

Steve

There are shades of Quatermass too in Wilson's story and possibly even Dr Who, which are touchstones for British SF. I read the book first, in French, and it's a bit different and less graphic than the film, but most of Wilson's fiction involves what I would call wish fulfilment sex and put me off reading much more of his work. He also wrote Return of the Lloigor in 1969, 37 years after Derleth first mentioned them in Lair of the Star Spawn. But the Lloigor in Call of Cthulhu and associated games is very much the Colin Wilson one.

Steve

I saw this movie and Cocoon at the cinema in French in the same year without confusing the two. Or confusing Tahnee Welch and Matilda May (who was also the voice of Pocahontas for Disney in France ten years later).

Mandy Reznor (She/It)

Crap, I probably should have commented this in the leadup to the episode—but for those of us in the US, Lifeforce is currently streaming for free on Tubi.

I've always thought that the middle stretch of Lifeforce, where they try to track the female vampire via hypnosis and so forth, was like something from a different movie and represented an effort to touch certain bases with the audience. As if the pitch was "It's a mix of alien invasion and Dawn of the Dead, with some Exorcist-style possession stuff too". Exorcist may not be quite right but it's like they were imitating a certain kind of psychic investigation movie to rope in those fans regardless of whether it fit with the rest of their story. If I recall correctly, in the book there's an idea that some people are a more subtle kind of energy vampire, as in the TV show What We Do in the Shadows. I think the astronaut survives, but it is observed that people in his company become tired while he seems to grow in vitality, as though he caught a bit of energy-vampireness from the aliens. Maybe that's where the movie's bit about more subtle possession and energy-draining came from. I want to pitch Chad and Chris on a story that would be great for the show: The Entrance, by Gerald Durrell. Horror story by an author not known for horror, found-manuscript framing device, old books in an old castle, some really original horror action, and no easy answer/explanation. Well written, slow burn buildup to horrifying climax.

Eric Sroka

Kind of apropos of nothing, but now that Kate Bush is trending again, maybe it’s time for Chris to release his version of Wuthering Heights?

John Escobales

I’m a huge Cannon fan! I never missed a Chuck Norris flick when I was a kid. The Octagon, Silent Rage, Lonewolf McQuade, Code of Silence. Loved them all.
