My understanding of Tolkien elves is that they were created with the intent that they would be the guardians and caretakers of the earth. Somewhat similar to the Maiar, Valar, and Ents these species are all intended to mind various aspects of the natural world, but men are intended to go beyond after death. Elves when they die have their souls go to a place of waiting until they are reincarnated. So Elves are not like vampires in that when they die they are done, their souls are equally immortal to men but where men go somewhere else, elves continue to return so that they can care and maintain the natural world.

Just to clarify, that last line destroyed me in my favorite way - I love when a story I'm not expecting to affect me emotionally suddenly *really* affects me.

War With the Newts is a little longer than the novels you usually do, but it’s kind of episodic. Maybe you could do an occasional chunk? It’s very much in the Chris and Chad wheelhouse and I’d love to hear you cover it.

At the risk of being annoying: Dennis Etchison! Let’s do this!

I grew up in rural Georgia and my parents didn’t get air conditioning until after I left home. I should bypass Purgatory altogether. 😀

I don’t know exactly why, but that Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien bit got me. It hits me in the universal “farts are funny” part of my brain.

I kinda liked getting a response to my feedback on the feedback episode. And I may have listened to it a few times. It's like getting a personal fan autograph from your fav. podcast celebrities. Thanks guys, for the cool show as always.

Jake

I guess we are the fans in fanatic! I tease... I think Chad and Chris really have a well thought out formula for this podcast and are quite funny and personable. Makes it feel like we're all hanging out with a bunch of buddies.

Man! I really gotta sign up to DingDongTron! Though the shortening to DDT makes it sound like a disease. I'm sure that's intentional though!

That triffid Transformer, aka Flytrap, remains one of my unobtainable holy grails of collecting. Maybe one day some third-party will make one...

Have you guys checked out The Lovecraft Investigations on BBC4? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/p06spb8w?page=2 It's a radio show in the style of a modern investigative podcast (a la Serial) that kicks off with a modernized take on Charles Dexter Ward. From there, they incorporate The Whisperer In Darkness and Shadow Over Innsmouth, weaving in some interesting UFOlogy and conspiracy theories as well. It's fascinating and well-produced. Highly recommend.

I don't know about ghosts of werewolves but I DO know that if you live within 10 miles of a hollowed out extinct volcano mysteriously supplied with water, power, and avgas and you stand in front of a mirror in a dark room and whisper "Launch Hellfires" three times you will hear a rush of wind and an almost animalistic growl overhead as you just summoned the GHOST OF AIRWOLF!

Awesome that you will cover Monster Squad! I LOVED that film back in the day. Watched it recently with my kids and quickly realized that A. it is surprisingly violent and B. it is SUPER CREEPY with how they spy on the teenaged sister and even take nude(?) pics of her and use them as blackmail. Ahhh, the 80's, never change....

Ben Gilbert

I saw the title and was excited to get a whole episode about Andrew Leman only to be disappointed.

"not just LOST characters" When I recently revised my Hobbes and Locke lecture, I reluctantly removed from my slideshow the photo of Terry O'Quinn in the jungle and its caption "John Locke in the State of Nature," because college freshmen were, like, first graders when that show went off the air, and they don't get it. I had long ago accepted that I can't successfully refer to 80s movies, but I didn't really start to feel OLD until the first year I realized I couldn't mention "The Matrix" anymore when talking about Plato's Allegory of the Cave, or "Gladiator" when the topic is ancient Rome. Unfortunately I came to that realization at least a decade ago, so imagine how old I feel now.

I will suggest that when a narcissist is confronted with the fragility of our common existence, and it leaves his soul well shook, then it was in fact a mind expanding experience.

The phrases "Balls to the wall" and "balls out" do not, to my surprise, have the same origin. As mentioned, "balls to the wall" refers to the throttle stick of aircraft controls, while "balls out" refers to the steam regulator on a steam engine, which is composed of two (or more) heavy balls on a valve mechanism. Gravity acting on the balls will close the valve, but steam pressure will push the valve open, causing the balls to lift up. Because they are in a hinge, the spread out as well as up. Thus, a steam engine burning hot and running fast is said to be running "balls out". I know no one asked about the origin of balls out, but I felt moved to share anyway.

This may have already been mentioned, but Valancourt Books will be releasing a compendium of all John the Balladeer stories in 2023. A new addition of Michael Shea’s Polyphemus as well.
