"He had been a hardworking and devoted sailor in His Majesty's Navy, but the fault that led to his separation from service was his persistent and uncorrectable misunderstanding as to the proper functions of the poop deck."

"By the ancient gods, one of these Black Ones had been sent to the Court of Cimmeria! The ebony warrior stood before the throne of King Conan, bowed, and then intoned in a deep, charnel, voice. "Your pardon, puissant Lord, as I whip this out." King Conan and his courtiers reacted in shock and...anticipation, but the giant obsidian warrior only withdrew a wax-sealed rolled parchment from his garments." ~from "Blazing Breeks" by A-E

Beyond the Black River is a good one to cover later. You get a little bit of Conan commentary on settler colonialism!

I do love this story. Conan is at his most Chaotic Neutral, just an utter bastard.

It's a Ghost.

At first I was rather surprised that Sancha stripped entirely naked before swimming ashore, but then I remembered I was reading a Conan story.

Nobody’s going to quote the Conan equivalent of “live, laugh, love” from…okay, it’s from the movie. But it works. I guess I have to now: General: “Wrong! Conan, what is best in life?” Conan (Arnold): “To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women!” Barbarian General: “That is good.”

Matthew Alderman

Please note that, as Chad pointed out, unless you’re Conan, this philosophy probably is likely to still get you arrested. Or chased across most of Central Asia by proto-Mongols.

Definitely didn't smirk at the immediate mention of the poop deck.

Sweatin' to the Great Oldies

I'm afraid I just find it impossible to get into Conan. I know there are gems in there, but the filth is so . . . filthy.

Why when REH got a time machine did he use it to watch me dance?

I am finally caught up to the podcast after listening for years! Thanks for putting out a great product! Due to time constraints, I only subscribe to 4 shows, and you are one. Here’s to many many more years!

If the action figure theory is correct than maybe the beings collected the pirates weapons so they could pose them with the weapons before shrinking them.

My favorite exchange of this episode.. Chris: "This reminds me of the Dancing Plague of 1518..." Chad: "... Okay" Also, I must insist that all future readings of Conan be done in Southern accents

Its obvious (at least to me) that Two Gun Bob was a HUGE Edgar Rice Burroughs fan. Conan is visually a complete clone of Tarzan, of course, and even has Tarzan's superhuman animal senses along with his superhuman strength and ability to tan without ever getting a sunburn despite coming from Northern Europe. This story in particular out of all the Conan stories with its casual nudity, not just of the lone lady character but also of the giants and the sailors and even Conan for the most part (just "breeks," like a loincloth, eh?), reminds me so much of Barsoom. Even the weird jade city and pool and the gigantic aliens would fit neatly into one of Burrough's planetary fantasy novels. I know Howard was using sex to sell his stories, but I think he was also falling back on the stuff he read as a kid, too.

I believe that the black giants causing the naked pirate boy to dance in a sinful, lascivious manner could actually be a racist take on jazz, just as rock and roll was branded "jungle music". Don't let your white children be exposed to this menace! They will become hyper-sexualized and smoke marijuana cigarettes!

So many panther similes… DRINK!

I've really struggled as I get older to get angry at or dismissive of things I've loved for so long being described (exposed?) as racist. I suppose it's a defense mechanism... like someone just called your kid ugly. Of course, I absolutely see why elements of old stories and tv shows are seen as such, but I generally don't recoil from the story. I know it's there... I roll my eyes... and I move on past it. It's one thing when bad guys do bad things, but it's another when your protagonist does it. Perhaps there's some fear that someone will accuse me of supporting those ideas in some way. I definitely need to work on being able to discuss that about these stories, without feeling such a stronge need to defend them. In my experience with Conan, he seems like he'd be the last person to underestimate someone based on whatever the Hyborean concept of race would be (he called those pirates/sailors a race, but that's more of a culture, right?). Anyway, great to see Conan back on the show again. Plenty more out there to pick from. Happy THEW-LY!!!

"I've unexpectedly killed your friend and colleague; I trust you'll accept me as his replacement."

Appending the kiss line to every story from now on. "...Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And one fine morning—— Now come here, girl, and give me a kiss..."

Among her many attributes of character on The Golden Girls, Blanche Devereaux can paint a scene descriptive to a Robert E. Howard level. "Then, as he kneels there before you, little beads of perspiration breakin' out on his forehead, his breath comin' shorter and quicker, --- he ever so gently slips the supple leather --- on your quiverin' foot, --- and you achieve a perfect fit." Whether Conan would be Blanche's vision of the perfect shoe salesman, I can neither support nor deny. Undoubtedly though, she LOVES a tight man, "with cast iron pecs, --- thighs that can choke a bear, --- butt you could eat breakfast off of." Sounds like Conan to me.

Greg Needham

I’m sorry but the fact Chad didn’t know about the dancing plague was frankly SHOCKING.

Andrew M. Reichart

I think it’s incredibly valuable to be able to enjoy a thing from one perspective and critique it from another. It’s important to be honest about the role racism played in the past, for plenty of reasons but especially in order to be honest about the role it plays today.

During the passage where the young sailor is compelled to do a joyless, laviscious dance against his will, I was picturing him doing 'the macarena'

I regret that I must issue SSSS with a cease and desist letter to stop all development of "Silk Breeks, murder in a small hyborean town" as it bears far to lose a resemblance to the classic USA Networks (yes,, we still exist) show "Silk Stalkings, sexy murder in...Miami I think, maybe LA?". Thank you for your prompt cooperation :p

Conan is a manic pixie dream boy for straight dudes.
